DeBRINCAT STAYS IN HOCKEYTOWN - Cat Signs 7 Years in Detroit and Horcoff Speaks - Oct. 14th, 2026

Alex DeBrincat signs a seven-year, $91 million extension with the Red Wings, and this Detroit Red Wings podcast grades the deal and asks why Simon Edvinsson still isn't signed. Plus a Red Wings vs Devils recap of the 5-4 overtime loss, six games into the season.

(00:00) - Intro

A rare bit of optimism in Hockeytown as the DeBrincat extension news landed. Detroit finally gets a win, and everyone takes a turn at "we're so back."

(04:50) - DeBrincat Extension Breakdown

Alex DeBrincat stays with his hometown team for seven more years at $13 million a season. Our full contract breakdown and grade, details on trade protections, and a why it may be a statement from interim GM Shawn Horcoff and ownership that they'll take care of their guys.

(16:05) - Red Wings Retool Timeline

Committing to DeBrincat through age 36 rules out a teardown, even for a team with one win so far. Is this a two-to-three-year retool around Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond, and the young core, or can it happen next season - and how much does the Dylan Larkin trade decide that?

(23:25) - Edvinsson Contract Standoff

Simon Edvinsson is headed back to North America to skate with a trainer his agency set up, but no trade or signing is done. Shawn Horcoff says he has "zero interest" in trading him - so after the DeBrincat deal, is the pressure finally on Edvinsson?

(37:35) - Devils Game Recap

Emmitt Finnie buries a perfect stretch pass from Michael Brandsegg-Nygard to give Detroit life, and Finnie returns the favor in the second. Alex DeBrincat ties it twice, but Jack Hughes wins it 5-4 on an overtime breakaway after a high-risk three-on-three pass from Raymond.

(47:30) - Raymond Demotion & Rasmussen Drought

Practice lines drop Lucas Raymond onto a line with Michael Rasmussen, and the numbers are brutal: 32 NHL goalies have recorded a point since Rasmussen's last one on January 5. Plus, Dylan Larkin still looks hurt - do you sit him while his trade request stands?

(58:50) - Griffins Prospect Update

Michal Postava opens 3-0 for the Grand Rapids Griffins with a 1.34 GAA and player of the week honors, making him the next goalie up in Detroit. Jesse Kiiskinen's seven points in five games make the case for a call-up, and Carter Bear scores his first goal.

(01:04:00) - Overtime Mailbag

Patron questions on Nate Danielson's slow start, whether a defenseman like Landon DuPont changes a franchise the way a center does, and Gary Bettman's look at movement clauses. Plus, Shawn Horcoff and Kris Draper scouting Danila Yurov as the Dylan Larkin trade talks continue.
