The role you have can shape you.

A job can teach you discipline.

Being a partner can teach you compromise.

But there is a danger in allowing a role to become your entire identity.

You become the person everyone expects you to be.

And eventually, you may forget who you were before the role existed.

The answer isn't to abandon responsibility.

It's to remember that responsibility should be carried by a whole person.

Keep your interests.

Keep your friendships.

Keep your curiosity.

Keep the parts of yourself that don't serve a practical purpose.

You can take a role seriously without allowing it to consume you.

Because when the role changes — and eventually it will — you should still know who you are.
