TIMESTAMPS
  • Mackenzie Shirilla final thoughts (7:01)
  • Hiking Murders (10:36)
According to a study by the Outdoor Industry Association, 43% of women who hike have experienced some form of violence or harassment while on a trail. This includes everything from unwanted comments or advances to actual physical assault.

In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the cases of three different women who were murdered while hiking.

  • Rachel Morin went for a hike in Bel Air, Maryland on August 5, 2023. Her boyfriend raised the alarm later that night when she didn’t return. Her body was found on a trail the following day. Rachel’s killer is still at large and police believe he may be responsible for an assault in Los Angeles earlier this year. The worry is that the perpetrator is escalating in the severity of his crimes.
  • Meredith Emerson took her dog Ella for a hike on New Year’s Day in 2008. She ran across Gary Michael Hilton on the trail. Gary attacked Meredith and he kept her alive for three terrifying days, before brutally murdering and decapitating her. Gary has since been charged with three additional murders.
  • Lauren Heike had recently moved from Washington to Arizona. She told a friend on April 28, 2023 that she was grateful to be able to get a coffee and go for a walk that day. Lauren did not show up for work when she was meant to and her body was found on April 29. She had been stabbed 15 times while out for a walk. Zion William Teasley (22) has been arrested and charged with Lauren’s seemingly random murder.

Timestamps: (5:58) - Tyler Goodrich Update (15:00) - Johnny Gosch On September 5, 1982, Johnny Gosch (12) left his home in the early morning to carry out his paper route.  His father would usually go with him, but on that fateful day Johnny went alone. Witnesses reported seeing Johnny speaking to different men that morning.  His red wagon, filled with newspapers, would be found abandoned by his father.    There have been reported sightings of Johnny over the years.  Johnny’s mother Noreen has said that in 1997, Johnny showed up at her home to visit her.  Johnny explained to Noreen what had happened during his abduction and said that he still feared for his life.  Noreen said she hugged him at the end of their visit, and watched him leave. Could Johnny really be alive and living a life under the radar?  Did he really visit his mother 15 years after he vanished? The Long-Awaited Trial for the Murder of 15-Month-Old Evelyn Boswell

Timestamp to skip intro: (8:45) In 2019, Evelyn Boswell (15 months) was seen alive for the last time, reportedly by a babysitter in Blountville, Tennessee. Evelyn was not reported missing until February 2020.   Her grandfather raised the alarm after he said he had not seen the child since Thanksgiving. Poisoned to Death? | The Deaths of Reporter Adan Manzano and Harold Allen

Poisoned to Death? | The Deaths of Reporter Adan Manzano and Harold Allen

Timestamps: (7:57) - Poisoning Cases In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss two cases where men were possibly drugged to death by women. Sports reporter Adan Manzano (27)  was found dead with no signs of trauma in his New Orleans hotel room in February 2025.  Adan had been in the city to cover the upcoming Super Bowl.  When police began investigating, they discovered Adan was last seen with a female ‘career criminal,'  Danette Colbert.   Danette has a history of drugging and robbing men. It was discovered that Danette used Adan’s credit card after his death. His cause of death is still pending with the Medical Examiner. Indiana man Harold Allen died in 2022 from what was initially thought to be natural causes.  It was only after his step-daughter, Ashley Jones, staged a robbery that his death was investigated.   It came to light that Harold was likely poisoned to death with ethylene glycol by his wife Marsha and Ashley.  The women tried multiple times to kill Harold with varying substances before they were successful. After Marsha was questioned by police, she took her own life. Ashley is currently awaiting trial.   Read our blogs for these cases: Adan Manzano Harold Allen Podcast Recommendation: Looking for a podcast that’s unfiltered, hilarious, and totally unpredictable? Dr. Amie Harwick was murdered by her long-term stalker on Valentine's Day

Dr. Amie Harwick was murdered by her long-term stalker on Valentine's Day

Skip the intro: (3:19) Dr. Amie Harwick was an established marriage, family and sexuality specialist.   She worked in Los Angeles and was highly respected in her field. In 2009, Amie began dating a man named Gareth Pursehouse. After 18 months, things turned sour and they broke up.  Except, Gareth could not accept the change. He was violent towards Amie and stalked her, forcing her to take out multiple protective orders. Amie managed to distance herself from Gareth over the following years.  In January 2020, the two had a chance meeting at a public event that Amie was attending and Gareth was working at.  This meeting caused Gareth to fly into a rage which terrified Amie. On Valentine’s Day 2020,  Amie attended a burlesque show with her friends. Gareth waited until she left and he broke into her home.  He lay in her bed and waited for. When Amie arrived home, she was brutally attacked by Gareth and he threw her off a balcony, leaving her to die. Gareth would go to trial for Amie’s murder and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. There have also been some big updates in the ‘suicide’ of Ellen Greenberg.  The medical examiner who originally titled Ellen’s death a suicide has now backtracked.  "It is my professional opinion Ellen's manner of death should be designated as something other than suicide," Dr Marlon Osbourne said. The Abduction & Murder of Daniel Morcombe

The Abduction & Murder of Daniel Morcombe

Timestamps (2:00) - Tracey Nix Updates (10:36) - Daniel Morcombe In December 2003, Australian teen Daniel Morcombe (13) had saved up some money and decided to take the bus to a shopping center to buy Christmas gifts for his family. Daniel walked to a nearby bus stop.  He attempted to flag down a bus, but the driver was unable to stop due to mechanical issues with the vehicle.  A second bus followed behind very shortly.  Daniel was no longer at the bus stop and was never seen alive again. The investigation into Daniel’s disappearance was one of the largest ever seen in Australia.  At one stage, there was a reward of $1m offered in the case. In 2011, a sex offender named Brett Peter Cowan was arrested and charged with Daniel’s murder.  Cowan had offered Daniel a lift to the shopping centre after the bus failed to stop.   Cowan murdered Daniel within an hour of his abduction.  In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the abduction and murder of Daniel Morcombe. Accident or Murder? | Grandmother Tracey Nix

Accident or Murder? | Grandmother Tracey Nix

Skip the intro chat: (7:36) Tracey Nix fell asleep while she was meant to be caring for her grandson Ezra, who was 16 months old.  Ezra got out of the home and went to a pond on the family property.  He ended up drowning and passing away. An investigation was conducted and no charges were laid against Tracey. In November 2022, Tracey was caring for another grandchild, Uriel, who was 7 months old.  Tracey took the baby to a restaurant for lunch and then drove her home.  Instead of taking the baby into the home, Tracey left her in the vehicle and went inside to play the piano.   She insists that she ‘just forgot’ that the baby was in the vehicle.  Uriel would pass away from hyperthermia after being left in the car in 90 degree temperatures. Tracey was recently taken to trial for Uriel’s death.   Ezra’s death was not allowed to be discussed during proceedings.  Tracey has been found not guilty of the manslaughter of Uriel but has been convicted on a lesser charge.
