Living and Thriving with HIV: The Stigma with Luke Kelly
It's Episode 20 of Mads World: Living and Thriving with HIV This week, in the wake of the record-breaking success of Channel 4’s program: It’s a Sin, we are discussing living with HIV and the stigma surrounding it. If you haven’t yet watched It’s A Sin, it's a beautiful but devastating series depicting a group of tight-knit queer friends living through the HIV/ AIDS crisis in the 80’s. The show starts as a fun, coming-of-age drama that explores identity, finding your tribe, and the chaotic journey that is your sexual discovery in your 20s. However, it takes a horrifying turn as as HIV begins to migrate from the US and London becomes a hotspot. We see the brutal reality of the AIDS epidemic and the harsh inhumane way queer people, mostly gay men, were treated as a result. The series has thrown the stigma of HIV and AIDS into the public eye, and joining me up next is a really special guest, Luke Kelly. After watching It’s A Sin, Luke was inspired to reveal his HIV+ status on Instagram through a video that has since received almost 60,000 views.
