The second stove, on the left was cold, but the smaller one, to the right, was roaring with intense fire. A human hand, slender and by all appearances female, dangled from the open door; flames licking it like tattered fabric. As they turned from the light of the fire the three officers discerned a pile of coal and the bottom steps of the staircase they had walked down had something lying on its bottom steps.
