The Country Club Murders

In March 2008, Charlene and Ernest Scherer were murdered in their Castlewood Country Club home in Pleasanton, California. Their son, Ernie Scherer III, was a professional poker player and the chief suspect. Police suspected Ernie killed his parents to inherit money to pay off his gambling debts, but with no forensic evidence to tie him to the crime, they were unable to arrest him. Later, when new evidence came to light, Ernie had vanished. “48 Hours" correspondent Peter Van Sant reports. This classic "48 Hours" episode last aired on 2/8/2014.
