1010: Participation Trophies | Skeptical Sunday

Are participation trophies ruining kids? Jason Feifer debunks myths and reveals the surprising century-long history behind the debate on Skeptical Sunday!

Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we're joined by Jason Feifer, the editor in chief of Entrepreneur magazine, host of the Build for Tomorrow podcast, and author of Build for Tomorrow: An Action Plan for Embracing Change, Adapting Fast, and Future-Proofing Your Career.

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:
  • As it turns out, participation trophies aren't some newfangled millennial invention. These shiny symbols of showing up have been collecting dust on shelves since your great-grandpappy was in short pants. We're talking 1922, folks — when the biggest participation trophy was surviving the Spanish Flu!
  • All of these folks bellyaching about participation trophies probably have a few lurking in their own attics. It's like complaining about kids these days and their gimmicky rock music while air-guitaring to Led Zeppelin. Pot, meet kettle — you're both made of participation trophy material.
  • Despite what the armchair psychologists down at the local watering hole might tell you, there's no scientific evidence that participation trophies turn kids into snowflakes. As they grow, kids naturally get more interested in winning than just showing up — like trading in their tricycle for a Harley.
  • The whole participation trophy hullabaloo is less about plastic awards and more about our collective freak-out over parenting, work ethic, and why these darn kids won't get off our lawns. It's just generational anxiety dressed up in a well-worn, borrowed suit.
  • Want to level up your success game? Ditch the black-and-white thinking. Winning's got more flavors than Baskin-Robbins, so keep an open mind for what's possible. Embrace the past, eye the future, and you'll be batting home runs with life's curveballs like a pro.
  • Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. If you have something you'd like us to tackle here on Skeptical Sunday, drop Jordan a line at jordan@jordanharbinger.com and let him know!

608: Jocko Willink | The Winning Example of Extreme Ownership

Jocko Willink (@jockowillink), commander for the most highly decorated special operations unit of the Iraq War, joins the show to talk about taking responsibility, discipline, intensity, and leadership to the next level as outlined in Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win. [Note: This is a previously broadcast episode from the vault that we felt deserved a fresh pass through your earholes!] What We Discuss with Jocko Willink: When making a decision, worrying about variables that can’t be controlled is a waste of time. A better outcome is likely if we learn to focus that wasted effort on factors that can be controlled. Understand why taking ownership of your mistakes, personal issues, and outcomes gets better results than trying to pass the blame to someone else. What does discipline = freedom mean? How do you stop small weaknesses that sometimes permeate discipline from having a negative impact on significant decisions? Is there such a thing as a natural leader? And much more... Dwyane Wade (@DwyaneWade) is a retired NBA All-Star, host of The Cube on TBS, and author of Dwyane and A Father First: How My Life Became Bigger Than Basketball. What We Discuss with Dwyane Wade: How to know the difference between giving your kids the opportunity to excel in areas that will enrich their lives versus pushing them into things they don't want to do. Lessons Dwyane learned from the basketball court that he now applies to his most important job: parent. How Dwyane dealt with imposter syndrome on the cusp of signing to the NBA. On the stigma of athletes seeking help for mental health, and why Dwyane encourages them to do it anyway. How Dwyane encourages his kids to be the best versions of themselves, strives to see the world from their unique perspectives, and doesn't shy away from consulting professional help when they pose questions he's unable to answer on his own. David M. Rubenstein is co-founder and co-executive chairman of The Carlyle Group, host of The David Rubenstein Show, and author of How to Lead: Wisdom from the World’s Greatest CEOs, Founders, and Game Changers and The American Experiment: Dialogues on a Dream. What We Discuss with David Rubenstein: Why David was one of the original signers of The Giving Pledge, a promise to give away the majority of his wealth instead of just building a stockpile of money for his heirs. The many ways David gives back to the United States for the privilege of growing up here, but why he eschews the idea of running for office. Why David finds giving away his money more rewarding than making it. The key errors people commonly make when fundraising for their business (and what they should be doing instead). How David raised his kids to develop the skills and strong work ethic to succeed without spoiling them. And much more... 605: Aaron Levant | NTWRK Shopping with Culture's Creators

Aaron Levant is the founder and CEO of NTWRK, the curated livestream shopping company some have called "QVC for the YouTube Generation." What We Discuss with Aaron Levant: What drew Aaron to graffiti art counterculture in his rebellious youth, and how he pivoted this interest into wildly successful streetwear entrepreneurship. What society loses when it underestimates the intelligence and educational capacity of people -- like Aaron -- who struggle with dyslexia, and why we need to support their development rather than shame them toward failure. How Aaron fell into the trade show game by making a stand to defy The Man and accidentally starting a viable business. How having an archnemesis in his industry to duke it out with feeds Aaron's competitive spirit and motivates his drive to push harder. "Ignorance is rich": The chaos theory by which Aaron decides where to put his investment dollars. And much more... 604: Put Your Best Foot Fetish Forward | Feedback Friday

604: Put Your Best Foot Fetish Forward | Feedback Friday

You're concerned that your foot fetish betrays the dedication you have to your significant other and makes you some kind of pervert in waiting. Is there anything you can do to course-correct your way back to decency, or should you just embrace this as an indelible part of yourself that you have the power to control? Or maybe no one should judge you for your foot fetish until they've walked a mile in your shoes? Welcome to Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in! Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/604 On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Is your foot fetish really a problem as long as the way it makes you feel doesn't intrude on the way anyone else feels? Is your roommate just wagging the dog when she insists her pooch got fleas from your apartment instead of the other way around? Was there a better way to make it clear you and your significant other want to get married on your own terms than refusing to participate in the garter/bouquet toss at their pushy family's wedding? Would it be rude of you and your siblings to request your historically terrible gift-giving mother instead direct her resources to charity? What are Anagnorisis and Peripeteia? Discover how Mike broke a pattern of commodity hosting by approaching the profession as a tradesman. Bromide busting and the problems with conventional wisdom. Tom Wright (@tomwrightasia) is an award-winning journalist, co-author of the New York Times bestseller Billion Dollar Whale: The Man Who Fooled Wall Street, Hollywood, and the World, co-founder of journalism studio and production company Project Brazen, and host of the Fat Leonard podcast. What We Discuss with Tom Wright: A deep dive into the shadowy world of corruption, money laundering, and embezzling by the shadiest shysters among the elite. How does an investigative journalist uncover misdeeds by the rich and powerful without winding up on someone's hit list? How did Jho Low, a charisma-free, second-generation fraudster, siphon billions of dollars from a Malaysian sovereign wealth fund -- with the aid of Goldman Sachs -- right under the nose of global financial industry watchdogs? How many ways are there to launder this kind of money without being detected by the authorities? Where is Jho Low today? And much more... 601: Should I Marry My Dying Girlfriend? | Feedback Friday

You've met someone who checks your boxes for marriage material, but there's one problem: medical issues may mean they've only got three years left to live. Should you propose and hope for a miracle? We'll examine this and more here on Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! Should you propose and hope for a miracle? Your spouse went on a quest of self-improvement, and now follows a so-called "life coach" who dispenses what certainly seems to be a steady buffet of snake oil with an exorbitant price tag. How can you wake them up to the fact that this is probably a scam? You have three years before you're able to retire from teaching -- a job you once loved, but students, parents, the community, and the administration are more entitled and demanding than they were when you first started. Three years seems like forever to endure a job you now hate. What can you do to make it to the finish line intact? You've received a sizable inheritance, but you understand how quickly money dissipates when you try to throw it at every problem you want to solve. Are you wise for wanting to use the money to create multiple streams of income so you are able to help people more confidently in the future, or just stingy? As a freelance consultant, how can you set boundaries that ensure you're not working for hours more than clients are willing to pay?
