7: Dr John Bodkin Adams Part 1

7: Dr John Bodkin Adams Part 1

Dr John Bodkin Adams was a general practitioner doctor in Eastbourne in Sussex from the 1930’s onwards but in 1956 his career would be put on hold and his reputation scrutinised. John Bodkin Adams was accused of the murder of 2 of his patients in 1957 and questions surrounded why so many of his patients had given him something in their wills. He had gained a list of wealthy and famous patients and was a huge part of Eastbourne society for a number of years. When he was accused of murder and forgery this changed but were the accusations just malpractice or something more sinister?

In this first part we look at the life of Dr John Bodkin Adams, his rise in Eastbourne society and the investigation that lead up to his arrest. The second part will look at what was dubbed The trial of the century and the repercussions that were felt around the country after it.

On the 23rd October 1979, a woman had been out horse riding along one of the trails in Bedgebury Forest in Kent. This had been a normal day until she spotted something unusual in the undergrowth at the side of the trail. Looking closer the woman quickly discovered it was the body of a woman. The woman had been beaten to death and left by the side of the path. The police cordoned off the scene and began to investigate however they quickly realised that without any identification or witnesses they did not know who the woman was. After multiple appeals and one arrest, the Bedgebury Forest woman still remains a mystery. Important information provided by: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedgebury_Forest_Womanhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/778172.stmhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFufAt4_f0U&app=desktophttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7qi_czNhJg&app=desktophttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7056796.stmhttps://www.kentonline.co.uk/kent/news/new-appeal-over-murder-mystery-a32811/https://www.independent.co.uk/news/new-test-reopens-unsolved-murders-1071002.htmlhttps://www.theguardian.com/uk/2000/may/06/2www.dl-sounds.comFollow us on social media:Twitter- @theunseenpodFacebook- The Unseen Podcast

On the 29th December 1969, Alick McKay returned home from work to his house in Wimbledon, London to discover that his wife was not at home. This was unusual as he was expecting her to be home and she hadn't mentioned that she was going out anywhere. The fire was on, the lights were on and the contents of her handbag were strewn all around the stairs. Alick phoned the police and as an executive at The Sun and News of the World newspapers he was able to get his wife's disappearance on the next day's front page. When she had still not returned he was worried and he received a phone call. The call came from a man saying "We are Mafia M3\. We are from America. We tried to get Rupert Murdoch's wife. We couldn't get her so we took yours instead. You have a million by Wednesday night or we will kill her."....Important information provided by: https://www.crimeandinvestigation.co.uk/crime-files/mckay-kidnappinghttps://www.peoplemagazine.co.za/real-people/true-crime-wrong-woman/https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-17464298https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQlvtF1RxcUhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Muriel_McKayhttps://www.findmypast.co.uk/https://www.spectator.co.uk/2017/07/almeidas-new-play-about-the-sun-is-exactly-as-i-remember-it-says-kelvin-mackenzi/usic by: www.dl-sounds.comFollow us on social media:Twitter- @theunseenpodFacebook- The Unseen PodcastInstagram - TheUnseenPod

13: The Gorse Hall Murder

On the 1st November 1909, George Harry Storrs was attacked and killed in his home at Gorse Hall in the town of Stalybridge, Greater Manchester. This had not been the first attack on his home and police intially found it difficult to find any suspects in the crime. George was a prominent and wealthy man in Stalybridge as he was involved in cotton industry; was his wealth a motive in his death or was it something else? This case would end up leading to two different trials but they would not end up as the police had hoped. Important information provided by:http://gorse-hall.co.uk/TheMurder.htmlhttps://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/local-news/new-suspect-in-100-year-old-murder-977375Jonathan Goodman, The Stabbing of George Harry Storrs, Allison & Busby, London 1983https://www.findmypast.co.uk/Music by: www.dl-sounds.comFollow us on social media:Twitter- @theunseenpodFacebook- The Unseen PodcastInstagram - TheUnseenPod
