246 - Trail of Tears

246 - Trail of Tears

When the 1830s began, nearly 125,000 various tribal members lived on millions of acres of land in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina and Florida - land where their ancestors had lived for centuries. By the end of that decade, only a handful of indigenous Americans would remain in the southeastern United States. The federal government had forced them to leave their homelands and walk hundreds of miles to a specially designated “Indian territory” across the Mississippi River - present day Oklahoma. And this difficult and deadly journey - thousands would die along the way - would be known as the Trail of Tears.
As new waves of European settlers kept pouring into America, farming land along the coasts was quickly taken up. Farming land for growing cotton in Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee was especially coveted. New settlers wanted that land and they would do almost anything to get it - including taking it from tribe members who yes, had lost their battles against the US government, but also - could’ve been treated far more fairly in the aftermath. Rather than work to assimilate the tribes into American culture - the US federal government under President Andrew Jackson and his Indian Removal Act, passed by Congress in 1830, chose to banish them to less desirable land. Though the entire process of Indian Removal that lasted from 1831 to 1877 would come to be known as the Trail of Tears, one march in particular would become emblematic of the entire misguided and heartless venture - the 2,200 mile 1838 journey of seventeen Cherokee detachments. Historians estimate that between 1/4 and 1/3 of what remained of the Cherokee population died during that journey. We look at this journey and other tribe's journey's today, talk about what led up to them, examine the history of European contact with the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Seminole, and Chickasaw, and go over so much more in this jam-packed-with-historical-information episode, let's learn from our mistakes so we don't repeat them edition, of Timesuck.

BONUS 8 - Project MK Ultra: The CIA experiments with LSD

In the 1950s, while many Americans were busy watching I Love Lucy or waiting for the new Elvis Presley album, the members of the CIA's Project MK Ultra were busy dropping acid, taking shrooms, and conducting some of our nation's most outlandish experiments in their quest to beat Russia in a race to see who could develop a truth serum, induce selective amnesia, and master mind control (spoiler alert - neither nation figured it out - thank God). Hear the true, declassified tales of CIA Cold War mayhem in the most hallucinogenic suck yet. Timesuck is brought to you today by the Small Town Murder podcast. 49 - Kurt Cobain: The Triumph and Tragedy of Alt Rock's Greatest Icon

I remember the exact moment I first heard Nirvana and I remember the day he died. But I didn't know how hard he had to work for Nirvana to break through, and I didn't know how terribly troubled he was while they were breaking through. With the recent suicides of Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, it felt like the right time for this episode. And it was a great excuse to listen to Nirvana all week. They were so good it made me angry all over again that Kurt's not still with us. The life of Kurt, the rise of Nirvana, and the circumstances of his tragic death in today's grunge edition of Timesuck!  Timesuck is brought to you today by the Crime in Sports podcast. 47 - Rasputin: Russia's Mad Monk

47 - Rasputin: Russia's Mad Monk

Rasputin is one of the strangest historical figures out there. He was a Siberian peasant who ended up becoming part of the Tsar's inner circle due to his alleged healing abilities. He also helped getting Russia's royal family murdered when the Russian people came to believe he was possessed by the Devil, partly because he was sleeping with about half of St. Petersburg, holding odd religious orgies, and doing stuff like getting drunk and waving his penis around at restaurants. Not cool for a guy the country assumes his sleeping with the Tsarina. Learn all about this mad monk and Russia's transition from imperialism to communism in a truly fascinating suck!  This episode of Timesuck is brought to you by the Fantasy Footballers podcast. https://www.thefantasyfootballers.com/ The best fantasy football advice you can find and the most fun you'll have listening to it. 46 - Blood Countess Elizabeth Bathory: Most Prolific Female Serial Killer Ever?

46 - Blood Countess Elizabeth Bathory: Most Prolific Female Serial Killer Ever?

16th century Hungary was a place and time of unimaginable violence. Europe had been at war with itself and the Ottoman Turks for centuries. Hungary was located between the Holy Roman Empire and the Ottomans, and when those two empires weren't battling each other on Hungarian soil, Hungary was battling itself. And after Hungarian nobles had squashed a recent peasant uprising, the Hungarian peasant class had become virtual slaves with zero rights, people the noble class could exploit however they wanted to. And since peasants were being constantly murdered anyway, what difference did 650 more disappearances, the number of victims Bathory is rumored to have killed, make? How did one woman stand out for excessive butchery in an age when butchery was the norm?
