387 - Evil Eyes: Carl "The Sunday Morning Slasher" Watts

In 1972, the 45 passengers and crew of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 faced extreme weather, avalanches, a variety of injuries, sickness, sun blindness, thirst, and starvation so severe, they were forced to eat the bodies of their friends and family who lay in the snow next to them for over two months in this harrowing tale of survival. Their story is so unbelievable, the first police officers that two members of this group finally contacted took hours of convincing to believe it. No one should have survived a plane crashing at an altitude of over 11,000 feet in the Andes, even in the Spring. The plane crashed far up above the tree line in a snow covered landscape, with no plants or animals for anyone to eat. The plane - because the intended flight was only two hours long - had almost no food on board. It was cannibalism or die. Even with cannibalism, the sixteen men who would make it alive still should have died. In October of 2002, the DC Snipers terrorized residents of Washington DC, Virginia, and Maryland for three weeks. During that time, people lived in constant fear that they’d be killed - shot down - while in the midst of doing normally safe and benign daily activities like pumping gas, waiting for the bus, or even just walking across a parking lot to do some shopping. In total, ten people would be murdered, three people were critically injured, and others would be randomly shot at. Hundreds of FBI agents and local police officers would work this case before it was over. They were desperate to catch the man who was dubbed the DC Sniper or Beltway Sniper by the media. Except it wasn’t one man.  Investigators were looking for a lone, white, male gunman. They had no idea how wrong their profile was. When it was all over, 41-year-old John Muhammad and 17-year-old Lee Boyd Malvo - both black - would be arrested. And now the authorities had to unravel the strange father-son relationship between the two, and uncover their motive for their shootings. And that is a lot of what we look into today. Their relationship, more akin to cult leader and cult follower than it was to the normal killing duo dynamic. LSD is a powerful, mind-bending drug. Only a crazy person would try and tell a coherent and compelling two-hour-plus historical narrative while frying their brain on the equivalent of four hits of acid. And well... I am that crazy person. Today, to celebrate the 300th episode of Timesuck, I try and pull this story off immediately after dropping two double-hits of LSD. And things get.... weird. Also, what an amazing story! Bass Reeves' name and story are finally getting more exposure and it's about damn time! There's a good reason some people think Bass is the real-life inspiration for the Lone Ranger. This guy was a borderline superhero. Quick on the draw, fearless, and possession a relentless sense of justice, if you were and outlaw and Bass had ahold of your warrant.... you were as good as caught. Or as good as dead. The man was like a Wild West Boba Fett. He was the best at one of the hardest jobs in the Wild West  - a Deputy Marshal tracking down wanted men - and the occasional wanted woman - in Indian Territory, an especially lawless land that sat where present day Oklahoma now stands. Brace yourself for this one. If you can't handle graphic depictions of sexual abuse directed in the most obscene and ridiculous ways towards breasts, this isn't gonna be one you're gonna enjoy. This story truly plays out like a horror film. Some type of Rob Zombie slasher flick. On acid. Robin Gecht is a man with a VERY specific sexual obsession. And that obsession, when he wasnt behind bars, combined with Satanic worship straight out of some 1980s Satanic Panic PSA, led Robin to embark on a spree of sexual violence and murder that left at least eighteen women dead. And helping him were Ed Spreitzer and brothers, Tommy and Andrew Kokoraleis. These four men, dubbed The Ripper Crew,  had a murder van, a hidden Satanic chapel, and a lot of really dark desires they took out on a lot of unsuspecting women in and around Chicago in 1981 and 1982. Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. Such a good example of that with this week's episode. In 2018, I watched a fascinating docuseries on Netflix called Wild, Wild Country about a controversial guru building a utopian city in the Oregon desert. I thought about doing an episode about the Rajneeshees then, but I didn't want to be overly influenced by that one show. I'm glad I waited. More dirt on the cult has come to light in the years since, and we look into it today. Did Bhagwan Rajneesh really offer enlightenment to his followers? Did he really ever even care about enlightenment? Or was it all about getting rich and sex? Or was it about enlightenment AND getting rich AND sex? Bhagwan's messages often seem empowering and enlightened at quick glance, but looking deeper, there was always a lot of darkness inside the supposed utopia he was trying to build. Apologies for my weak voice today! Remnant of a second bout with Covid. Had to drink several cups of hot tea and honey, and take numerous breaks to at least sound somewhat understandable. Today, we look into how Germany dealt with the Holocaust once it was over. And how occupying powers, including the US and the Soviet Union, dealt with it as well. Who do you punish when millions have been complicit in some way(s) in committing one of the greatest atrocities in human history? We also look at holocaust denial. As early as 1933, Hitler and the Nazis - the National Socialist German Worker’s Party - began passing a series of discriminatory laws against Jews— inch by inch, chipping away at their freedoms. They took away their property. Their ability to practice certain jobs or exist in public places. They took away their ability to own pets or walk around without a badge identifying them as Jews.And they did all this while the world watched. While everyone hoped that maybe they’d finally just stop with all their mindless hate. But instead, they just kept pushing it further, and further, and further. Soon, the Nazi’s began deporting Jews. Sending them out of Germany and to various labor camps. Then, the plan changed from one of deportation to genocide, and concentration camps were constructed to efficiently kill massive amounts of people. The majority of people deported to these new death camps were transported in cattle wagons. These wagons - traveling along train tracks - didn’t have water, food, a toilet, or ventilation. Sometimes there weren’t enough cars for a major transport, so victims waited at a switching yard, often with standing room only, for several days.  Stewing in their own filth, fear, confusion and hunger. Sometimes, when the train made it to the concentration camp, and the transport doors were opened, everyone inside was already dead. Today we explore and explain the holocaust. Rodney Alcala - the Dating Game Killer.  Not as well known, but just as vicious as any other killer we've ever covered here. Between 1968 and 1979, Rodney brutally raped, tortured, and killed at least nine girls and women -  possibly over a hundred. His victims would literally be sexually tortured to death by the man they generally just thought wanted to take artsy pictures of them. Instead, he'd beat them, bite them, rape them, and strangle them until they were unconscious, and then bring them back for round after round of more sexual torture. And in the middle of his sadistic spree, he appeared on the popular TV show The Dating Game... and beat two other bachelors to win the episode's prize - a date with a single woman. She chose him. And almost immediately regretted it.
