Episode 20 - Why Common Sense Is Not So Common

Episode 20 - Why Common Sense Is Not So Common

In episode 20, MTT Coach Gareth James and Mental Game Trainer Dr. Tricia Cardner open the show by discussing the recent runs Gareth has been having in the WCOOP & Powerfest. While he had a couple of deep runs, a big score was not forthcoming – this time!

Tricia is still hard at work in the Primer class that Matt Berkey, Christian Soto and Jordan Young from Solve For Why Academy are currently teaching. This class is an in-depth look at range based poker & it requires a fair amount of study! This week we covered a lot of GTO concepts.

If you’d like to join her in going back to school, Gareth is offering a 20% discount on his classes and lessons at www.MTTpokerschool.com – just use the discount code: back2school when you check-out. The code is good through the end of the month (September 2017).

After that, we launched into the show with Tricia answering a compelling question sent in by Keith who asks why common sense is not so common among poker players. A long discussion about the many factors that impede our ability to think rationally ensued. Tricia explained that rational thought is actually quite difficult to attain thanks to a number of cognitive biases that we all exhibit. A main reason for this is that we form our beliefs first and then seek out evidence to support them instead of going about it in the opposite direction.

Gareth also shared some of his experiences as a qualified teacher and explained how there are also many different learning styles that contribute to exceptional learning. If you want to be a more rational thinker, you’ve got to train yourself to think in a scientific manner.

We covered the knowledge illusion, confirmation bias, and how we are all much more adept at seeing irrationality in others than in our own selves.

All in all, if you would like to improve your reasoning at poker, it is a good exercise to take the time to write out your complete strategy. By doing this, you’ll likely see areas where you are not as clear and logical as you would like to be.
