Doug Kennedy and Tom Krumins are two former Boy Scouts who were sexually abused and assaulted while under the watch of the Boy Scouts of America. Today Doug and Tom share their painful stories and explain the context of how these crimes were hidden for so long by those in charge. Both Doug and Tom are featured in the Netflix documentary “Scouts Honor” and both are working tirelessly to protect other children from harm.Trigger warning. A Survivor of sexual abuse by the Director of the scout camp where he worked, Dr. Kennedy has been instrumental in communicating with Survivors, advocating for their interests, and has testified in bankruptcy court. He also played a significant role in negotiating an agreement for the improvement of Scouting policies related to youth protection. Tom Krumins is a passionate Executive Director leading the movement for childhood sexual violence Prevention, Healing, and Justice at Keep Kids Safe. https://www.keepkidssafe.usHe is committed to advancing trauma-informed solutions through policy, education, and community mobilization. As a Survivor of childhood sexual violence within the Boy Scouts, Tom is uniquely positioned to understand the needs of Survivors and the importance of advocacy at the individual, organizational, and systemic levels. After decades of ignoring thousands of child sexual abuse reports going on under their watch, the Boy Scouts of American finally had a reckoning in 2010 when a brave former scout came forward to file a lawsuit and testify. Kerry Lewis was only 11 years old when he was repeatedly sexually abused by an assistant scoutmaster named Timur Dykes. Even though Dykes had previously confessed to his superior, another scouting leader, to sexually abusing 17 boys in their troup, Dykes was allowed to continue with the organization and continue to abuse Kerry as well as others. Today we interview Colette Martin who takes us through the harrowing night she was attacked by her former intimate partner, months after he had moved out from the home they shared, months after he had already started a new relationship with another woman. Colette, a mom with a young son, living in the New Brunswick region of Canada, didn’t know how to recognize the red flags in her ex-boyfriend and had no way of knowing he was a ticking time bomb who was planning to murder her, in front of her child, in plain sight of her parents’ house who lived next door. Laura illuminates all of the warning signs of coercive control that he displayed. We continue analyzing Teresa Halbach's murder and the behavior of Steven Avery who was convicted in 2007 for her killing along with his nephew Brendan Dassey. They are both currently serving life sentences in Wisconsin. Filmmaker Shawn Rech’s new series “Convicting A Murderer” re-examines the case and provides much more information and context than was previously disclosed in Netflix’ “Making A Murderer” about this same case. Police were able to zero in on Miranda, bring him into a line up where Trisha identified him and shortly thereafter he wrote a full confession to the crime without the presence of an attorney. Miranda was convicted, but later his verdict was overturned by the Supreme Court who found that his rights as had been violated.
