“Making A Murderer” the Netflix documentary about the 2005 murder of 25 year old Teresa Halbach near Green Bay, Wisconsin and the prime suspect in her killing Steven Avery took the world by storm in 2015 launching many viewer theories and passionate camps as to what may have really happened to the young photographer and who was responsible for her horrific murder. Avery, who had been wrongfully convicted of a violent sexual assault in 1985 was exonerated when DNA evidence proved another man was the true offender, and released in 2003 after serving 18 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Just two years later, Steven Avery would again be the focus of an investigation, this time for Teresa's murder. The filmmakers of “Making A Murderer” Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos (who funded the docuseries themselves long before Netflix agreed to distribute it) have always said their premise was to follow Avery's murder trial as it unfolded for their cameras based on who they had access to. They have always said they were not there to investigate the crime nor to take a side, but to document the process of the justice system as it happened in front of them. But Ricciardi and Demos came under intense criticism by those who thought they left out the most important details of the case. Now a new docu-series “Convicting A Murder” streaming on The Daily Wire website seeks to re-open the case file and show viewers what was missing. We finish our conversation with Cathy DeBuono, who talks about her near-miss experience with Victor Paleologus, the serial stalker, rapist, and murderer of Kristi Johnson. Cathy tells us how Paleologus approached her at the same Los Angeles mall where he would target Kristi Johnson four years later. She describes the eerily similar ploy he tried to get her to meet him at a Hollywood Hills location on the pretext of a job interview. Fortunately for Cathy, she walked away unharmed, but she never forgot that encounter and when she heard about Kristi’s murder she came forward and was a witness for the prosecution in his trial. We continue our conversation with Terry Hall and Kirk Johnson, who are extremely concerned that Victor Paleologus, the man who murdered their daughter Kristi, will be granted his freedom despite a rampant history of violent crimes against women. Weighing in also is Cathy DeBuono, a former actress, who had a near miss with this offender and has been involved with supporting the Justice For Kristi campaign. Laura warns about the dangers of not properly assessing an offender like this who is up for parole and what she thinks should be done before that hearing. On Feb 15th 2003, Kristi Johnson, a bright 21 year old college student, was approached at a mall in Los Angeles by convicted rapist Victor Paleologus. She had no way of knowing he was not who he said he was, no way of knowing he had seven previous convictions and had just been granted parole. All she knew was this affable, helpful seeming man who said he was a movie producer started talking to her about the entertainment industry and offered her an opportunity to apply for a job. Kristi aspired to be part of the entertainment industry, not as an actress, but maybe in PR, maybe in other capacities, she didn't know yet, she was still learning the landscape of Hollywood but she was eager to work hard. She couldn't have known that he had hunted and attacked many women before. Paleologus targeted Kristi, lured her to an abandoned location in the Hollywood Hills, killed her and disposed of her body in a ravine. Now twenty years later, this killer is up for parole.
