Listener Q&A:

Prior to asking your question, PLEASE be considerate and do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question. 90% of the questions we receive have already been asked and answered here at BenGreenfieldFitness.com!

====================================== [contact-form-7 id="6222" title="Ask Ben"] ======================================

Rishon has a call in question about whether oats have gluten.

Craig asks: I'm looking for a gluten free cereal that I can just dump in my cereal bowl in the morning. I am adding blueberries and almonds to my cereal now. Ben has a call-in question about using glucosamine or Capraflex for recovering from an acute injury vs. using for chronic inflammation, and whether glucosamine chondroitin should be used long term.

Christy asks: I just listened to episode 127 where you interviewed Udo Erasmus. What is the temperature where you start to damage saturated fats? Udo mentioned not heating fats to "frying temperatures", but I'm not sure what that means. Is it safer to bake meat, what about boiling it? Is the temperature of boiling water too high? Or steam? I believe the temperature of steam is higher than that of boiling water. I think deep fat fryers work at about 350 degrees, which is baking temperature as well, so is baking as bad as frying?

Here is an oil smoke point chart.

Jenn asks: I have a question about night-time leg cramps.

For the past few weeks, I have been wakened several times a night with extremely painful spasms in my calves (mostly soleus), shins, and feet (both the tops and bottoms). They subside somewhat when I get up and stretch, but are a serious disturbance to my sleep and leave me achy and tired in the morning. I am a fit 38-year-old, and a former marathoner. I'm a daily commuter cyclist (about 45 - 90 minutes daily). I work out at the gym 3-5 days a week at a fairly high intensity, and do 2-3 yoga classes a week. My hydration and potassium intake are good. Other than somewhat increased cycling (clipped in for the first time this season), I haven't made any serious changes to my training. I have in the last 6 months switched to a diet lower in carbohydrate and have dropped about 10 pounds in that time, but my BMI is still a healthy 20.1.

The only other time I've had cramps like this was when I was anorexic and quite underweight a number of years ago, but I'm sure that my caloric intake is adequate now (usually around 1200 - 1400). It does make me wonder, though, if it could be a particular nutritional deficiency that could be causing these cramps? (I don't think it's my pedals since I've had them since May and only started having these in the last month or so.)

In my response to Jenn, I recommend she check out the magnesium http://www.pacificfit.net/supplements.php#naturalcalm and also this topical magnesium.

Komal asks: Just wanted to ask which milk us better for us? 2% or 1%.

Jeff asks: I'm a keen age grouper triathlete and have recently been diagnosed with osteitis pubis. Initial scans detected a small inguinal hernia but further investigation revealed OP which is what us causing me grief in the groin region. I've been advised to lay off running for 2 months but can swim and cycle. Do you have any advice to aid my recovery? Should I avoid kicking drills when swimming? Is walking ok?

Paul asks: What are your thoughts on PEMF?

"America's Worst Mom" Explains Why We Need More Free-Range Parenting & Less Helicopter Parenting: Let Them Grow

"America's Worst Mom" Explains Why We Need More Free-Range Parenting & Less Helicopter Parenting: Let Them Grow

Lenore Skenazy has been known by the nickname “America’s Worst Mom.” And yet I'm featuring her as a parenting expert in my upcoming Boundless Parenting book. Hear me out... Lenore graduated from Yale in 1981, and earned her master’s degree from Columbia University in 1983. A speaker, blogger, syndicated columnist, and reality show host, Lenore has been featured by national media outlets, including NPR, the New York Daily News, Good Morning America, and NBC News. Until 2008, Lenore was a regular columnist for the New York Sun. Her controversial piece, "Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone," received worldwide news coverage and earned her that "Worst Mom" nickname. However, the column also led to the founding of a blog called Free-Range Kids, which is "fighting the belief that our children are in constant danger from creeps, kidnapping, germs, grades, flashers, frustration, failure, baby snatchers, bugs, bullies, men, sleepovers and/or the perils of a non-organic grape." A bestselling book that followed, also called Free-Range Kids, kicked off a movement that promotes childhood independence and resilience as the path for children to grow into capable, confident, and happy adults. Lenore serves as the president of Let Grow, the non-profit organization behind Free-Range Kids. On her television show World's Worst Mom, Lenore trains overprotective parents to give their children more independence and confidence. Lenore Skenazy believes that the concept of helicopter parenting, excessive and often unnecessary worry about safety, and lack of creative and slightly dangerous free play are hampering the health and growth of children. The Pros And Cons Of Plant Medicines, The Truth About Pharmakia, Spiritual Growth & Much More

The Pros And Cons Of Plant Medicines, The Truth About Pharmakia, Spiritual Growth & Much More

Back in June of this year, I made one of the most important decisions of my life. I announced, after much contemplation and prayer, to stop using plant medicines. In a comprehensive two-part article series that provoked a wide range of responses, I detailed my reasoning for reaching this conclusion (you can read Part 1 here and Part 2 here). And while I've returned to reiterate this decision here and there since June, I have not yet - until now - devoted an entire podcast to the subject. Today I'm doing just that, as a guest on my friend Josh Trent's Wellness + Wisdom Podcast. Josh is the CEO and founder of Wellness Force Media, a company that has a mission to help humans heal mental, emotional, and physical health through podcasts, programs, and a global community that believes in optimizing their potential to live life well. Josh has spent the past 19+ years as a trainer, researcher, and facilitator discovering the physical and emotional intelligence for humans to thrive in our modern world. In Josh's words, he has been "bouncing around inside my orbit and consciousness) for 10+ years now, but it took this rather polarizing and controversial topic to bring us together for a real discussion on his Wellness + Wisdom podcast. Now, Josh is not for or against plant medicines. He does believe that plant medicines have special use cases, and that four lifesaving "levers" that need to be taken into account when considering usage: Preparation. Was the plant medicine prepared in a sacred way? Does the shaman or facilitator have the sacred experience and trusted lineage, combined with a pure heart? Setting. Has the space been properly cleared of dark energies, and are all participants aligned with humility and curiosity? Intention. Has the participant done preliminary work to get very clear on their intention, and to not come to the medicine with a disempowered wish? Integration. Is there a pre-, peri-, and post-integration skilled facilitator so the participant will avoid going away with no lessons learned? This podcast episode may ruffle some feathers. But at the end of the day, you are the only one who can answer the profoundly important question of whether or not you will partake in plant medicine. Hopefully, this fascinating conversation with Josh will get you thinking (and if you'd rather watch the video, that's below, too). Orgasm Enhancement, Blood Flow, Nitric Oxide, Red Light Therapy, Yoni Steaming, Prostate Massage & Much More With Sex Expert

Orgasm Enhancement, Blood Flow, Nitric Oxide, Red Light Therapy, Yoni Steaming, Prostate Massage & Much More With Sex Expert

Sex is a subject I can't (and don't want to) ignore... ...because sexual health is just as important for your physical, mental, and spiritual fitness as lifting weights, meditating, or praying. This is why I devoted an extensive chapter to hormones, libido, and sex in general in my book Boundless. I have also podcasted on sex, including episodes with Jamie Wheal ("Biohacking Sex, Tantric Breathwork, Plant Medicines For Orgasmic Enhancement & Much More."), Kim Anami ("A Vaginal Weightlifting Coach Reveals Her Secrets On How To Train Your Body For Soul-Stretching, Bed-Shaking, Neighbour-Complaining Sex"), and Dr. Richard Gaines ("The Non-Pill, Natural Alternative To Viagra That Instantly Fixes Erectile Dysfunction, Boosts Drive In Men & Women, Enhances Orgasm & Much More."). Then there was the wildly popular podcast with Susan Bratton, "Biohacking Sex: The Best Tips, Tricks, Supplements & Food To Optimize Libido, Desire & Arousal.", an episode that included sixteen bedroom and sex biohacking tips. Since it's been awhile since I've tackled the somewhat controversial, but nonetheless thrilling, topic of optimizing your sex life, I thought it was time to get Susan back on the show. Susan Bratton is a champion and advocate for all who desire passionate relationships. Married to her husband Tim since 1993, Susan is an author, award-winning speaker, and serial entrepreneur who teaches passionate lovemaking techniques to her fans around the world. Susan’s fresh approach and original ideas have helped millions of people of all ages, and across the gender spectrum, transform having sex into making love. As the CEO and co-founder (with her husband) of Personal Life Media and The 20, Susan has authored 35 books and programs and launched a line of libido support supplements for the sexual biohacker community. A deep thinker with a sweeping foundation of knowledge in human sexuality, Susan has been featured in The New York Times and on CNBC and the TODAY show as well as appearing on ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox, and NBC. Susan Bratton’s straight-talking, fearless perspectives are rooted in her personal experience of watching her sex life wither while she and her husband pursued dynamic careers. When their relationship hit a crisis point, the couple made a fierce commitment to do whatever it took to keep their family together and revive the passion in their marriage. Today, she and her husband have the kind of dream relationship most people long-since stopped believing is even possible—until they discover Susan’s teachings. Could This Be The Final Solution To The Vegetable Oil Problem? The Amazing New Technology Of Cultured Oil With Zero Acre Farms

Could This Be The Final Solution To The Vegetable Oil Problem? The Amazing New Technology Of Cultured Oil With Zero Acre Farms

Zero Acre Farms is on a mission to remove vegetable oils from the food system. Vegetable oils are the most consumed food in the world after rice and wheat, and are leading drivers of chronic disease and deforestation. At Zero Acre Farms, they make healthy oils and fats from fermentation, not cleared rainforests. Their first product, which they call Cultured Oil, has the highest level of good fats, lowest levels of bad fats, and a 90% smaller environmental footprint than vegetable oil. I've tried the new Zero Acre Farms Culture Oil. It tastes good, cooks well, seems to have a decent smoke point, and seems to be an affordable, environmentally friendly alternative to what I consider to be one of the scourges of the nutrition world: vegetable oil. My guest on this podcast, Jeff Nobbs, is a healthy food innovator on a mission to reverse chronic disease and help fix the many problems in today’s food system. After an early career in technology, Jeff founded the healthy fast casual restaurant chain Kitava, served as COO of Perfect Keto, and co-founded food security non-profit HelpKitchen. Jeff is now co-founder and CEO of Zero Acre Farms, makers of Cultured Oil. Episode sponsors...
