MoviePass is back in a very big way. This week they've launched their nationwide beta test. There's a lot of details in this. We're actually going to be trying this out ourselves and doing a full review on the podcast, The Geek Freaks podcast. So check that out, guys. But basically, you guys can return to the theaters using MoviePass nationwide now. X-Box and Bethesda had their developer direct, which showed off a few of the upcoming games. Most notable was basically gameplay for Minecraft legends, a new Elder Scrolls expansion and Red Fall. Nothing major here. They were just good little updates. They're kind of going with the Nintendo route and just doing more frequent updates. The special thing about this is that it was the developers themselves showing off their game. HBO Max has canceled the shows "Doom Patrol" and "Titans" and James Gunn has said this was not his doing and was planned months ago. It's disappointing as both these shows have a lot of fans. Tobey Maguire is willing to play Spider-Man again and the possibility of using both Tobey Maguire and Garfield in future Spider-Man movies. 343 Industries, the studio behind the Halo franchise, has denied rumors that it has been taken off of lead development of the Halo franchise and has stated that it will continue to "develop Halo now and in the future". This statement was made by the studio head Pierre Hintze on Twitter. The news follows the mass layoffs of 10,000 people at Microsoft, which saw a number of employees at Xbox Game Studios, The Coalition, 343 Industries, and Bethesda let go. Rumors then started swirling that 343 Industries would be taken off lead development of the Halo franchise and would instead help third-party studios bring Halo to life in the form of new games. Activision Blizzard, the publisher of Overwatch 2 and World of Warcraft, has said that Chinese publisher NetEase declined a last-minute offer to extend their publishing deal in China. This means that services for games such as Overwatch 2, Hearthstone, and other Blizzard titles will be discontinued on January 23rd as planned. In November, the company announced that it was looking for alternative ways to bring its games to China but no further information has been revealed. As a result, World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Warcraft III: Reforged, Overwatch 2, the StarCraft series, Diablo III, and Heroes of the Storm will no longer be playable in China. However, Diablo: Immortal, Blizzard’s mobile game, is published under a separate agreement and is unaffected at the moment. James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has officially become the sixth movie ever to cross the $2 billion mark worldwide. It is also the filmmaker’s third to hit the milestone, alongside Titanic and the original Avatar. The sequel grossed $2.024B globally and $1.426B from overseas turnstiles. It has become the No. 4 title of all time overseas, jumping past Avengers: Infinity War and behind only Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, and Titanic. This gives Cameron bragging rights to three of the top four movies ever at the international box office. It has also grossed $227M from IMAX, overtaking Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the 2nd highest-grossing movie in the format’s history. Actor Jeremy Renner, who stars in the Marvel series Hawkeye, has provided an update on his recovery from a snow-plowing accident that left him with over 30 broken bones. He took to Twitter to thank his fans for their messages and appreciation, and to let them know that he will recover from his injuries. He also showed a sense of humor in response to a tweet from Captain America actor Chris Evans. The accident occurred on January 1st, as Renner was trying to help a family member who was stuck in the snow and was run over by his own vehicle. The stunt team behind the upcoming Star Wars Disney+ series, "Skeleton Crew," has confirmed that filming has wrapped up and the series is set to premiere later this year. The series is an Amblin/Spielberg-like coming-of-age story about a group of kids lost in space around the same timeframe as The Mandalorian, with not much more information about the series has been released. The series was first announced by Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau at Star Wars Celebration 2022 and creator Jon Watts has described it as "the story of their journey trying to find their way home." Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick series, will direct Michael B. Jordan in the Tom Clancy sequel Rainbow Six, which will be a follow-up to 2021’s Without Remorse. Jordan will reprise his role as Navy SEAL and CIA operative John Clark, who has appeared in numerous Tom Clancy novels. The movie will adapt from the same novels that Ubisoft has based its video game series on. Stahelski will direct the movie and has become one of the best action directors in Hollywood. Without Remorse was an origin story for Jordan’s portrayal of Clark and was released on Amazon during the pandemic. However, Rainbow Six is expected to be released in theaters. Stahelski is also involved in a remake of Highlander and will produce the John Wick spinoff Ballerina. Late-night host Stephen Colbert has partnered with Skybound Entertainment and Vincent Newman Entertainment to develop a TV series based on Roger Zelazny’s The Chronicles of Amber, a fantasy series first published in 1970. The story follows a young man named Corwin, who has the ability to travel through different dimensions of reality and rules over the one true world, Amber. Fantasy author George R.R. Martin has expressed his desire for the series to be adapted for the screen for years and is not involved in the project.
