Ep. 364 - Craig Grossi, author of "Craig & Fred"

While doing intelligence work for the Marine Corps in Afghanistan during 2010, Craig Grossi came across a dog that changed his life. They sparked an immediate connection when Craig fed the dog and the dog wagged his tail in response. Deciding to keep him while he continued his service, and eventually giving him a new home in America, it's safe to say Craig also changed that dog's life. The story is the catalyst for the critically acclaimed book "Craig & Fred: A Marine, A Stray Dog, and How They Rescued Each Other." Craig joins me this episode to go into detail on rescuing Fred, and the philosophy of "stubborn positivity" as Grossi puts it, that Fred taught him. We also get into the subjects of Guantanamo Bay (where Craig spent his first four years in the Corps working as a prison guard), and why veterans should be encouraged to write and share what they've gone through, good or bad. Grossi has such a feel good story in a world where there's a lot of bad news out there, and I'm happy to have him on to tell our audience all about it. If you're a dog lover, you'll be moved. If you have a child in your life that loves dogs and the military, there's also a young readers' edition available. SSG Beth King, ret., Chinook Crew Chief and Wounded Warrior Project Advocate

Beth King joined the military to provide for her son and became the first female in her company to fully progress to the role of crew chief. One fateful night in Afghanistan, her Chinook was hit by an RPG, throwing her from the helicopter. Her harness caught her, saving her life, but the incident left her with serious injuries that were not immediately apparent to others.   She went 18 months without treatment, only to later discover that she had suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI). As her symptoms worsened, she was eventually medically discharged from the military.   Her injury, compounded by PTSD, anxiety, and depression, led King to isolate herself. Eventually, the Wounded Warrior Project helped renew her sense of community, reigniting her love of sports and, ultimately, her zest for life. Now, it is King's turn to give back, helping other veterans find a sense of purpose as they return to civilian life.   Find out more about Wounded Warrior Project: https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/   Join the SOFREP Book Club here: https://sofrep.com/book-clubSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dan Pace is a former Special Forces company commander and battalion executive officer (XO) of the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne). He is also the author of "It Was What It Was," a book detailing his experiences and the challenges faced by his unit during their deployment in Baghdad as part of the 1st Infantry Division's "Surge" Brigade.   Pace discusses moral injury and how it is a product of cumulative and accumulated damage. It is difficult to address but must be nipped early because of the danger it poses to the integrity of the entire organization. Mark Valentine, Retired F-16 Pilot and President of Global Government at Skydio

Mark Valentine, Retired F-16 Pilot and President of Global Government at Skydio

Mark Valentine is a retired U.S. Air Force officer and a combat veteran F-16 pilot who served for over 25 years. Today, he is the President of Global Government at Skydio, a leading U.S. drone manufacturer. Despite his vast experience flying combat jets, Valentine admits that in today’s battlefield, drones impact results in ways that new jets or missiles cannot.   As autonomous drones become more sophisticated, they now make far fewer errors compared to their human operators. However, in actual combat where lives are on the line, the humans behind the drones must face a deeper question about the desensitization that happens when a soldier uses a drone thousands of miles away, like a video game, to take another life.   Join the SOFREP Book Club here: https://sofrep.com/book-clubSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dave Brown, Former Navy Seal and Author of 'And Goliath'

Dave Brown, Former Navy Seal and Author of 'And Goliath'

Dave Brown is an outstanding former Navy SEAL known for his small stature but immense determination. Standing at just 5'3", he was always underestimated, both by high school bullies and Navy recruiters, yet he remained undeterred and locked in on his goal to serve.   Despite being initially dismissed due to his size, Brown's persistence and resilience led him to pass the rigorous Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training, even running with two stress fractures during "Hell Week." He graduated with BUD/S Class 115 and served with Underwater Demolition Team 21 and SEAL Team 4. His deployments took him across Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.   His memoir, "And Goliath," tackles the human side of being a Navy SEAL. Especially in Brown's case, where his physical limitations seemed to doom his dreams, "And Goliath" chronicles the willpower he needed to tap into his potential for success, overcome perceived limitations, and come out at the end as an inspiration to all current, former, and aspiring special operators.   Get a copy of "And Goliath": https://andgoliathbook.com/   Join the SOFREP Book Club here: https://sofrep.com/book-clubSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
