Ep. 2138 What you need to know before approaching the US Wine Market | wine2wine Business Forum 2023

Ep. 2138 What you need to know before approaching the US Wine Market | wine2wine Business Forum 2023

Welcome to Episode 2138, where we present a session recording from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. Today’s episode is entitled “What you need to know before approaching the US Wine Market” and is led by Mirella Menglide. Italian Wine Podcast is proud to be a media partner of wine2wine Business Forum and is pleased to present this series of market-focus sessions, recorded in Verona in November 2023. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and wine professionals from around the world, providing an opportunity to network, develop and expand their wine business worldwide. About the session: While the US was a booming market for wines during the pandemic years and Italian wines reached a peak in 2022, overall wine consumption slowed for the second year in a row. Mirella Menglide will discuss how imported wines, faced with a barrage of federal and state government regulations, must find a way to appeal to a new, younger generation of consumers who seem to be increasingly less interested in drinking wine. About the host: Mirella Menglide holds a master’s degree in Foreign Languages and Literature from the University of Bucharest. Fluent in 5 languages, she translated a novel into Italian for the University for Foreigners in Perugia and has contributed to various publications. She also attended a course on International Business Administration at the University of Gothenburg. After working in public relations at a Swedish company, she joined the New York office of the Italian Trade Commission as part of the food & wine sector. At present, she is the Senior Trade Analyst of the sector, in charge of advising Italian companies on US legislation, helping organize promotional and educational activities such as seminars and guided tastings, and participating in trade shows alongside wine and food professionals and press representatives from both Italy and the US. Mirella has been instrumental in ensuring and maintaining the relationships between American and Italian food and wine companies, which aims to result in a broader knowledge, appreciation and, ultimately, presence of Italian products in the US. When not helping Italian companies find a counterpart in the US, Mirella enjoys reading and writing, art, music, traveling, cooking and, of course, drinking wine. Welcome to Episode 2137 of the Italian Wine Podcast with Stevie Kim’s Ambassadors’ Corner on Clubhouse. In this episode Wim Sas interviews Giovanni Fiorentino, of the Fiorentino winery in the small rural village of Paternopoli, in the center of the Taurasi area, in Irpinia.   Today’s learning objectives: I hope this interview can set a different view on Aglianico and Taurasi. I’m always surprised how ‘unknown’ these wines are beside the well known producers like Mastroberardino, Feudo di San Gregorio or Terredora. You know, once you have a well-aged Taurasi in your glass, you know exactly what I’m talking about!  Co-Moderator - Wim Sas Wim Sas, the founder of Wijnkennis in Lille, Belgium, is a renowned wine expert with over 30 years of experience. He recently earned the prestigious title of Italian Wine Ambassador from the Vinitaly International Academy in Verona, a recognition achieved by only a few worldwide. His deep knowledge of Italian wines, including varieties, production methods, terroir, and history, sets him apart in the wine industry. Besides being an importer, he is dedicated to wine writing, wine education, teaching courses for aspiring sommeliers and wine enthusiasts. His passion for wine is evident in his commitment to sharing his expertise and inspiring others on their wine journey. He graduated in law and worked as a consultant for the public administration. His parents were farmers and his mother Margherita, in particular, always made wine at home, while his father was forced to emigrate to the United States. Giovanni always used to help his mother in the production of ‘Aglianico’ and ‘Coda di Volpe’ wines, which was sold in demijohns. In 2012, Giovanni quit his job and built a new bio-architectural winery next to the house where he was born. He continued to cultivate the family vineyards, about 5 hectares - 4 hectares of Aglianico and 1 hectare of Coda di Volpe. He bottled for the first time in 2016: now, he produces about 20 thousands bottles each year. His goal is to make wines that tell the story of his family and his land: a gentle and elegant wine that respects the vintages and roots, the terroir without neglecting good drinkability.  Connect: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fiorentinowines  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fiorentinowines  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/giannifiorentino/  Website: https://www.fiorentinovini.it    _______________________________ Let's keep in touch! Ep. 2133 Sicilia DOC with Antonio Rallo | On The Road With Stevie Kim

Welcome to Episode 2133 of On The Road Edition. Today Stevie Kim is in Sicily to talk about Sicilia DOC with Antonio Rallo, president of the Consorzio di Tutela Vini DOC Sicilia. More about today’s guest:  The controlled designation of origin for Sicilian wines was established on 22nd November 2011 by a decree issued by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies. On 12th June 2012, the same wine growers, winemakers and bottling companies that supported recognition of the DOC, established the Consorzio di Tutela Vini Doc Sicilia with the aim of promoting the production of Sicilian wine and its area of production.
The consortium boasts about 3,000 wine growers amongst its members and, thanks to this high level of representation, it has been attributed erga omnes status by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies. The consortium’s role therefore lies in the protection, promotion, development, provision of consumer information and general supervision of all matters related to Sicilia DOC wines.
