Ep. 1337 Enrico Coser | Italian Trade Agency Masterclass Wineries In Germany

Welcome to Episode 1337; part of our new Italian wine interview series set in Dusseldorf, Germany. Today Joy Livingston interviews Enrico Coser of Ronco dei Tassi winery. Stevie Kim and her team travelled to Dusseldorf, Germany this March to collaborate with ITA, the Italian Trade Agency. ITA was organizing some incredible Masterclasses featuring the best wines Italy has to offer. Each masterclass was led by the Master Sommelier Eros Teboni (awarded Best Sommelier Worldwide in 2018), and they wanted us there to document the amazing 3 days! Tune-in each Thursday as we bring you the great interviews that unfolded over the course of 3 days. More about today’s guest: Enrico Coser’s wine was featured in the “Bordeaux Blends of Italy” masterclass. The Friuli region, located in north-eastern Italy on the Slovenian border, is renowned for being home to some of Italy’s most avant-garde winemakers. Ronco dei Tassi, however, stands out from the crowd with its firm commitment to tradition, producing layered, elegant wines that speak of the terroir and the land from which they come. The winery is guided by Fabio Coser, previously a consulting oenologist in the area, who purchased the estate in 1989 with his wife, Daniela. At the time, the property comprised about 22 acres, 10 of which were already planted to vine, in the heart of the Collio Goriziano in the township of Cormòns. The name of the winery itself is closely tied to the region: “ronco” is the word in Friulian dialect to describe a “hillside, terraced vineyard,” while “tassi” refers to the badgers who often pay visit to the vineyards to enjoy the harvest’s juiciest grapes. Sons Matteo and Enrico have joined the family business and the estate has grown to over 30 hectares (75acres), 18 (45 acres) of which are planted to vines. The remainder of the land has been left as woodland, considered essential to maintaining the delicate balance between cultivation and forest, allowing sustainable agricultural practices to be implemented most effectively. The estate is ideally positioned at the boundary of the Plessiva Natural Park, an oasis protected by the Friuli region, and as such provides a safe haven and ideal habitat for local flora and fauna to flourish. The family firmly believes in the value of protecting this little corner of paradise, acting as a guarantee to ensure the future of this splendid territory and its wines.
