DEEP DIVE - On this episode of Those Conspiracy Guys we dive deep into the history of one of the most popular religions in the US that is widely spreading around the world and came from the mind of one man with his face in a big hat, Joseph Smith and the history of The Mormons. In the very early 19th century a wave of spiritualism called the Second Great Awakening overtook America and the afterlife, religion and the occult were a fascination of everyone looking for titilation and an entertaining break from religious piousness.Joseph Smith, from a family prone to visions, had God and Jesus come to him at age 15 and prophesise to him that he would be the leader of a new religion that would put right the wrongs of the church as it was. Using magical crystals and some golden plates that were shown to him by an ancient angel he was able to write the lost scriptures of the Christ after he moved to America and he preached this as the gospel truthHe gained many followers and soon thousands followed Smiths teachings. They would band together in villages, doing business with each other and eventually influencing politics. They were persecuted for their beliefs, including polygamy, and were driven from many towns and cities to the outskirts of the US. Mormons finally settled in the Utah territory, before it was part of the States, and made a quiet life for themselves there. Or so the history books would have you believe; but war and massacres abound as the Mormons fought for their independence while also killing a few travellers on their way to california for the gold rushUsing The Book of Mormon as their weapon of the lord their faith prevailed and they grew larger still in numbers. With maternal sexual abuse and some questionable choices in his early teens, Chikatilo resigned himself to the fact that he would never be normally sexual. He got away scot-free with the murder of a young girl near a hut he owned, and despite clear evidence, another man was arrested and convicted. Chikatilo, the killer, was born.After a shameful youth and a bogus career as a teacher where he was consistantly ridiculed by the students, Chikatilo finally snapped and attacked one of his students and the wave of attacks and sexual nightmares began. He got a job that would keep him mobile throughout the country without much suspicion and he would attack and kill at will.After capture Chikatilo would become one of the most famous murderers in Russian history and officially their first 'Serial Killer'. his courtroom shenanigans made it seem like he was crazy, but he was still tried and convicted. DEEP DIVE -On this episode we talk about one of the darkest patches on US history and a pan-atlantic collusion that could have been the driving force behind the global actions of military, scientific and political powers for the last 70 years, Operation Paperclip.In the last days of WW2 the Nazi elite were wondering what their future would look like. Impending trials for war crimes would definitely be a possibility; and some took the opportunity by pawning their military and scientific knowledge in exchange for freedom and exclusion from prosecution in Nuremberg.Operation Overcast and later Operation Paperclip was the US intelligence services plan to gain as much Nazi engineering, military, scientific and espionage intelligence they could before the Russians. The US has had a shady history at the best of times, but harbouring Nazis and cooperating with them as they greatly advance the space program, increase military might, give intel and previous files owned by the SS to the US intelligence community and eventually become revered members of western society, made a lot of people suspicious of the motives of these ex-Nazis. Names like Wernher Von Braun, Josef Mengele, Arthur Rudolph and Klaud Barbie are just a couple of the 1600 scientists brought to the states for their knowledge. TRUE CRIME - On this episode of Those Conspiracy Guys we discuss the still mysterious case of the murder of Meredith Kircher, more famously known as the Amanda Knox case. Knox and her boyfriend Raphael Sollecito were arrested for the murder of Kircher in 2007 and spent 4 years in jail until their case was unprecidentedly thrown out and they were set free.Kircher was brutally murdered in the home she and Knox shared in a small Italian town called Perugia. They were both on a study abroad trip and Knox and Kircher only knew each other for a couple of days. Knox also only knew her then lover Sollecito for a couple of weeks and made the case all the more mysterious. A man called Rudy Guede, a known burglar, was also arrested for the crime as well as Patrick Lumumba, Knox's boss in her waitressing job. The police incompetence in this case was astounding and the real killer could still be on the loose. Many think Knox and Sollecito were guilty and the legal system in Italy was torn apart with the release of the two in 2011. The case went to the Supreme Court and the appeal fell in Knox's favour but not after her and Sollecito's lives were ruined by salacious tabloid press.The facts in this one are very much left to interpretation and Claire and I discuss at length the intricacies of the case; the suppositions made by the prosecution including the public prosecutor who thought he was some sort of rock star, Guiliano Mignini. We also discuss the role of the tabloid media in the case and how they swayed the public to presume guilt. TRUE CRIME - On this episode of Those Conspiracy Guys we discuss one of the more famous miscarraiges of justice with an Arkansas trio of young men, known as The West Memphis 3, who were convicted of the murders of three boys in the city of West Memphis, served 18 years in prison, and were released after a celebrity star studded campaign for justice allowed them to be set free under a legal technicality.Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Miskelly Jnr were said to have brutally taken the lives of Stevie Branch, Chris Byers and Michael Moore in what was purported to the court to be a satanic paedophile sex ritual. These lads were put through the legal system ringer and evidence and testimony stacked up against them.With new evidence, reinterviewing of witnesses, multiple documentaries and a concerted public effort to rebalance the scales of justice, the West Memphis 3 were released from prison in 2011. But the question remains, who did kill those three little boys? Fingers are pointed at many people involved closely with the case and even a few mysterious figures.
