TRUE CRIME - On this episode, we talk about Joseph James DeAngelo now known as The Golden State Killer and his 40-year​ reign of terror on the unsuspecting residents of California. During the 70s DeAngelo committed a series of brutal rapes and murders but did so in many different areas and with seemingly different motives and techniques.He was mistakenly identified as the Visalia Ransacker, The Original Night Stalker and The Diamond Knot Killer by law enforcement; thinking these murders were committed by different people. His preparation, execution and psychological terrorism after the crimes had been committed have never been equalled​. His efficiency and careful planning left him unapprehended until the summer of 2018.I'll Be Gone in The Dark, the book by Michelle McNamara, and her tireless work writing about this case brought new evidence to light in the years preceding his arrest. Richard Nixon declared a war on drugs to combat their corrosive effect on the youth of America. Others claim it was an attempt to maintain control on a population that was becoming wise to the marinations of the political elite and the culture those new citizens were growing up in had harmless party drugs at its centre.Laws and governmental organisations that exist today were created in this time and in the 1980s during the crack cocaine epidemic plaguing American cities; Reagan announced the Zero Tolerance policy which led to hundreds of thousands of young men and women being incarcerated for much longer than necessary. The prison industrial complex grew from this and instead of compassion for addiction, a punitive and unproductive policy of mass incarceration began in America.Vilifying drug addicts is one thing, but interfering in the politics of the countries where the drugs are grown throws a suspicious light on the motives behind this so called War on Drugs. The DEA and CIA were in the headlines thanks to whistle blowers like Gary Webb. DEEP DIVE - On this episode of Those Conspiracy Guys we head down south to the land of the pines, to where the seemingly inarguable facets of human decency don't seem to exist and where an historically hated, morally outdated and powerfully overrated set of white guys wilfully discriminate against anyone who isn't them, we are talking about the Ku Klux Klan. From the mis 19th Century the Klan have been active and after the emancipation proclamation freed the black slaves in the US, these post civil war contrarians have fought to keep America white and keep other races, ethnicities and religions subjugated either by intimidation or by infiltrating the houses of politics and law.With new cinema being used as a Propaganda tool in the early 20th century, a second resurgance of The Klan emerged after the first wave was destroyed by political unification and social reform. This second wave were more emboldened and took actions and made an impact so much so that this is the typical image we think of today when we say KKK. With WW2 unifying the US further and African Americans fighting not only for their country but for their rights as citizens; The KKK made their third and most violent resurgence. It was created in antithesis to the Civil rights movement and powerful figures, predominantly in the South, used it to take advantage of localised prejudice.Coming from the millions of members in the 20s to just the hundreds of thousands in the 50s and 60s the Klan influence on modern culture has shone a light on the still existing bigotry in the US social structure. Their campaign of America First and the exclusion of minorities from politics, education, and social programs is said to be still in operation today. The numbers of the KKK today are in the mere thousands but still a visible force of modern day 'Nazis' are present in the form of white nationalist protestors. David Berkowitz, who originally known as the .44 Caliber Killer, shot 13 people and killed 6 in what was known as The Summer of Sam, and sparked the biggest man hunt in the history of New York.Berkowitz claimed that he was instructed by a demon, who lived inside his neighbors dog, to carry out these shootings and this and the letters sent to police, taunting them, made The Son of Sam a genuine threat to the safety of everyone in New York City at the time.
