Ammonia safety and regulation with Matt Dunlop from V.Group

Green ammonia is one of the potential fuels for zero carbon shipping, but its toxicity poses a safety challenege for the maritime industry.

In this episode of the Seatrade Maritime Podcast, host Gary Howard, correspondent for Seatrade Maritime News, speaks with Matt Dunlop, Group Director, Sustainability & Decarbonisation at V.Group.

The conversation covers Matt's work at V.Group and at The Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping where he is a secondee working on ammonia regulation.

Matt gives listeners a peek behind the curtains at The Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping and details the areas in which guidance for the use of ammonia as a marine fuel are being developed, including seafarer training and operational guidelines.

Matt also speaks of the importance of his personal experience as a seafarer in developing guidelines for ammonia, and the practical viewpoint he brings to discussions of processes that will affect work onboard.

Listeners will learn about the collaborative ethos behind the Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping and the work being done there to advance decarbonisation, the particular considerations for operating vessels using ammonia as a fuel, and the timelines for publishing the center's guidelines and submitting them to the IMO.
