Welcome to Episode 2114 of the Italian Wine Podcast with Stevie Kim’s Ambassadors’ Corner on Clubhouse. In this episode Wim Sas interviews Judith Unterholzner of Gump Hof winery, located on the northern-southern route cutting across the Alps, hailing back to the Middle Ages. Today’s learning objective: Discovering the wines of Alto Adige which is well-known which is gaining fame. However, when people talk about Alto Adige wines, they often mention the communal cooperatives, which are doing a fantastic job! Terlano, St. Michael Eppan, Nals Margreid, Girlan, Tramin... Almost everyone has a few bottles from one of these producers at home. But the small family producers are still less known, and that needs to change. Co-Moderator - Wim Sas Wim Sas, the founder of Wijnkennis in Lille, Belgium, is a renowned wine expert with over 30 years of experience. He recently earned the prestigious title of Italian Wine Ambassador from the Vinitaly International Academy in Verona, a recognition achieved by only a few worldwide. His deep knowledge of Italian wines, including varieties, production methods, terroir, and history, sets him apart in the wine industry. Beside being an importer, he is dedicated to wine writing, wine education, teaching courses for aspiring sommeliers and wine enthusiasts. Therefore, she has congenitally been Alto Adige DOC and already during the highschool years, she started working as trainee for the cooperative in her hometown, Cantina Terlano, where she got a first glimpse into the multifaceted wine world. Whilst during her study period at the Free University of Bolzano she had a side job at that winery, after university she started working in Terlano’s sales and marketing department travelling the world for the wines from her hometown for several years before moving to lake Kaltern in 2016, where she became sales director of Cantina Kaltern and Erste+Neue. As Judith was always looking for an opportunity to experience and live the wine world in 360°, in 2019 she took the chance to start working at the partner’s family winery Gump Hof, where together with Markus she is taking care of all the facets of vine growing and winemaking from the grape to the glass.
