Episode 182: Missoula, MT- 8/29/2005

To finish our Vault series, we turn to the final Vault on our list - the Missoula 2005 show. This comes at an unfortunately opportune time a week after Jeff tested positive for Covid-19 forcing Pearl Jam to cancel the rest of their tour, but also we take the time to honor him and send our best wishes while covering a show in his home state. This was the first of a few Montana shows that doubled up as a campaign for US Senator John Tester, who in 2005 was looking to win the seat. This was the first show of the 2005 tour featuring legs in Canada and South America, so it could be seen as kind of a tune up in a way. But this was also a good indicator for some things that would happen during that tour year. There were some rarities broken out on this night that hadn't been played since the mid-90's. Bee Girl made an appearance for the first time since 1994 thanks to Jeff's song writing prowess on it, and Black, Red, Yellow is played for the first time since 1996 thanks to Phil Jackson being in the crowd. This show also gets highly political with the climax happening in Daughter getting some aggression out against Fox News. Episode 20: Ottawa, CA - 9/16/05

This episode is the first time we dig into the Canadian tour of 2005 - the first time the band did a full tour leg specifically in the country. Patreon donor Patrick Boegel joins us to discuss his experience being in attendance this night in Ottawa. One of the things that Patrick talks about often is that the band was really in a good place during this time period. Riot Act was two years past and while they were beginning to focus on a new album that ended up being Avocado, they didn't let that get in the way of what many say is one of their top tours in the history. What made this show special right off the bat was the first introduction of Don't Gimme No Lip into the live catalog. The band was also joined on stage by the opening act Sleater-Kinney during their second encore to perform Harvest Moon, Leaving Here and Rockin' In The Free World. Along with those two major talking points, we'll get into how the band structured the beginning of their set as well as how they were able to make four straight hits at the end of the set work so well. Oh, and there's also the roads in Canada that Eddie brought up... Or is there only one road in Canada? Episode 19: Camden, NJ - Night 1 - 7/5/03

Episode 19: Camden, NJ - Night 1 - 7/5/03

The 2003 Riot Act tour has been seen by many as one of the pivotal tours in Pearl Jam's entire legacy. Historic shows such as State College, The Mansfield Experiment and the show that spurned the Live At The Garden DVD all took place in a very busy year for them. Camden Night 1 fell right in between Mansfield and MSG during an amazing run for the band. On a hot summer night a day after the 4th of July, what better than seeing your favorite band with a fireworks display going off in the background? When the band notices and rearranges the set accordingly, you know you're in for something special. As a disclaimer, this episode does get a little heavy into politics discussing how the band was handling their critics at a time where the country was at odds over a war. We do get a little bit into how our current situation in this country compares to what was happening then, but we do our best to try and understand both sides of the spectrum. Tied in with that we talk a lot about Eddie and Johnny Ramone's friendship and how even through their differences they were able to find common ground. Episode 18: Grand Rapids, MI - 5/19/06

We take a trip to Grand Rapids, Michigan for this episode, but if you were to listen to this bootleg, you'd be surprised it wasn't in a major city. After a two night trip in Chicago supporting their self titled, or Avocado album, the band noticed that newer tracks weren't being well received by the Ten Club members that would continuously get the best seats due to their ranking in the lottery. Because they weren't feeding off their energy, if you believe the rumors the band decided to shake things up and give some new faces a chance to get to the front. With new faces comes new energy. This show was driven by the energetic enthusiasm the crowd put in with every song, new and old, and the band fed off that momentum the entire night. Additionally, they decided to do a little experiment with the encore playing 6 slower songs in a row, similar as to how they tend to begin encore sets in this current era. One of the new faces that got a chance to see the band up close is one of our Patreon donors, Bradley Piasecki, who joins us this episode to talk about his experience at this show. We'll talk with him about how the band's placement of certain new songs in the set could've turned off the touring, front row followers as well as what the "experimental" encore has meant for the band moving forward. Episode 17: MSG - Night 1 - 9/10/98

Welcome to 2019! This year we promised to cover every MSG show in chronological order and that's the way we're gonna kick it off! We start with the band's first performance in the Garden back during the Yield tour in 98. Eddie said it best - "you ain't shit until you've played Madison Square Garden" and that quote alone proved to be the litmus test on the first night. On a Thursday night where the crowd was luke warm at best and technical difficulties plagued the band throughout, we break down how their first moment in the world's most famous arena might not have lived up to the hype. It was a tough position for the band to be in, but as we all know they would return to the Garden the next night for one of the most BREATHtaking performances in the band's history. Episode 16: Wishlist Set Creation

Happy holidays everyone! For our final show of 2018 we decided to give you a special treat deviating from the norm. This week instead of covering a Pearl Jam set, we're creating one! Matt and Randy bring some unique ideas to the table taking everything they've learned since the start of this podcast to showcase how the perfect Pearl Jam show may be constructed, demonstrating how truly hard it must be for the band to make these decisions night in and night out. Will they agree and collaborate on the project together or will their opinions clash ending up in a total disaster? Expect a Festivus miracle! Episode 15: Moline, IL - 10/17/14

You voted, we listened! By the skin of its teeth Moline 2014 squeaks out the victory! As a major surprise in an intimate setting, Pearl Jam brought something to Moline that hadn't been done before - they played No Code in its entirety. While they had performed two albums front to back years prior to this night, this was the kick off of an unexpected tradition that spurned into more album shows on following tours. This one had a special feel to it though. We'll do our best to recreate a night that can't be replicated, but as you'll hear throughout this episode we're just as blown away by the surprise as the fans in attendance were. Episode 14: Chicago, IL - Vic Theater - 8/2/07

One of the most rare and special shows in Pearl Jam's live catalog, the small club in Chicago played host to just over 1,000 fans in attendance prior to a Lollapalooza headlining gig. What followed was something we've never seen from them before or again - a show filled entirely of white whales and uncommons. No Even Flow, no Alive, no Better Man but instead we see them bust out lesser heard songs such as All Or None, Education and Undone. To help us with numbers and stats, we welcome Dave JanTausch from LiveFootsteps.org to get into the nitty gritty details of what made this show something we're likely to never see again. Help us decide next week's episode by voting in our poll open until Sunday! Episode 13: Melbourne, Australia - 3/17/95

We're going down under, but leave your didgeridoos at home because this show will leave you rockin' out! Okay, that was lame.. but this episode contains a show that was used for a very early bootleg called Rarefied And Live that was released back in 95. In the middle of the Vitalogy tour, Eddie is full of anger and angst during this 26 song set. Also, who better to make an appearance on drums than a future fighter of foo? That's right, Dave Grohl and the band rock in the free world at this show and its everything you could ever hope for.
