1070: Squatters | Skeptical Sunday

Scared of squatters taking your home? Nick Pell brings perspective to what the media tells us is a "growing crisis" on this week's Skeptical Sunday!

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:
  • Squatting occurs when people occupy a property without legal right or permission, often in vacant homes or rental properties. While they may create fake leases or documentation to appear legitimate, they are distinct from legal tenants who have stopped paying rent or are being evicted.
  • Most squatting cases become complex civil matters rather than criminal ones because squatters often create fake leases and establish utility bills in their names, making it difficult for police to immediately remove them.
  • The current housing situation contributes to squatting — average rent has increased 13.7% year over year since 1980, while wages have only grown 0.2% year over year since the early 1970s, making housing increasingly unaffordable for many.
  • Changes to squatting laws need careful consideration, as overly strict laws could potentially be weaponized against legitimate occupants (such as domestic abuse victims) or lead to frivolous claims against legitimate tenants.
  • Property owners can protect themselves by regularly checking on their properties, maintaining good documentation of ownership and occupancy, and quickly establishing a paper trail with authorities if issues arise. Being proactive rather than reactive is the best defense against potential squatting situations.

638: Yuriy Matsarsky | Fighting for Ukraine

Yuriy Matsarsky is a Ukrainian journalist turned civilian fighter against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Since the incursion began, he's been keeping the world updated with events as they happen as the host of the daily podcast Fighting for Ukraine. What We Discuss with Yuriy Matsarsky: Why did Yuriy -- and so many of his civilian countrymen and women -- turn in the tools of their trades for assault rifles to defend their homeland against the professional army tasked with invading it? Why Yuriy considers these Russian invaders more heartless and brutal against civilians -- including women and children -- than even ISIS terrorists he's encountered in war zones. What Yuriy hopes Westerners come to understand about this conflict sooner rather than later that often gets missed by mainstream media. What day-to-day life and overall morale are like for Ukrainian defenders, and how Yuriy sees this conflict ultimately playing out. Short of picking up a rifle and heading to Kyiv, what can you do to help Yuriy and his fellow defenders keep resisting the advances of their uninvited neighbors? And much more... Bill von Hippel (@billvonhippel) is a professor of psychology at the University of Queensland and the author of The Social Leap: The New Evolutionary Science of Who We Are, Where We Come From, and What Makes Us Happy. What We Discuss with Bill von Hippel: What our eyes tell us about how humans evolved to cooperate with one another. How a psychological phenomenon called the theory of mind makes us aware that mental states of others don't match our own, and why this trait gives human beings a unique advantage in the animal kingdom. Why hunter-gatherer societies are more egalitarian than what we see in modern Western civilization. Why so many of us hate the way we look in photographs. Can animals lie? And much more... 636: Is It Wrong to Decline Guardianship of Family? | Feedback Friday

You and your spouse made the decision long ago not to have children of your own. So was it wrong to hesitate when your brother-in-law asked you to assume guardianship over his children should the unthinkable happen to him? We'll try to get to the bottom of this conundrum and more here on Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in! Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/636 On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: First off: the good pastor from episode 571 shares what he's been up to since we last spoke. Are you wrong to decline your brother-in-law's request to assume guardianship over his children should the unthinkable happen? By happenstance, you did a favor for someone who turns out to be a bigwig at a company where your son would like to apply for a job. Is there a non-awkward way to approach this person for a possible lead? Can there be such a thing as closure when a seemingly dandy keen college romance ends in a sudden, inexplicable breakup? You adopted a puppy just a few weeks after losing the family dog you'd known since childhood. Now you find yourself having full-blown panic attacks worrying about all the things that could go wrong with the new pet. What can you do to ease this ever-present, crippling anxiety sooner rather than later? You and your spouse speak multiple languages, and you'd like to pass them along to your newborn daughter. What can you do to ensure you're not unintentionally overwhelming her in the process? Have any questions, comments, or stories you'd like to share with us? 635: Joe Barone | Living in Dread Between the Mob and the Feds Part Two

Joe Barone was born into a life of crime from both sides of his family, became the longest-running mafia informant in the history of the FBI when his father was killed, and now lives in hiding from people in both camps who want him dead or behind bars. [This is part two of a two-part episode. Make sure to catch part one here!] What We Discuss with Joe Barone: The many reasons Joe now considers the FBI to be more treacherous than the mob. What Joe was allowed and not allowed to do by the FBI while blending in with the mob. How Joe prevented the murder of a federal prosecutor and a US district judge. How Joe's relationship with the FBI soured after 18 years of being its top informant. The consequences Joe continues to suffer as a result of this soured relationship, and what he hopes the future brings. And much more... [This is part one of a two-part episode. Make sure to catch part two later this week!] What We Discuss with Joe Barone: What it was like being born into -- and growing up in -- a crime family, and how Joe was swayed into the life in spite of aspiring to become a postman. The real glue that ties mob families together has nothing to do with honor or unity. How his father's murder was used to turn Joe into an FBI informant for 18 years. What it was like for Joe to live a double life among mobsters -- keeping his cool while fearing for his life -- during those 18 years as an informant. How much does it cost to hire mafia "assistance" in intimidating or eliminating a personal archnemesis? And much more... 633: Finding Work Fast with a Criminal Past | Feedback Friday

Getting your record expunged after the embarrassment of earning a DUI can take years, but you need to land a job today. So how do you find work fast when you have a criminal past? We'll try to find an answer to this and more here on Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/633 On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Getting your record expunged after the embarrassment of earning a DUI can take years, but you need to land a job today. So how do you find work fast when you have a criminal past?  [Thanks to attorney Corbin Payne for helping us field this one!] Despite working in tech -- arguably the most optimistic field there is -- you find yourself battling a constant wave of hopelessness over the escalating climate crisis and the future of the planet. What can you do to keep your eco-anxiety in check? When confronting your fiancée with text messages suggesting she's been cheating on you with a co-worker, she insists it never got physical and she wants to reconcile. But can you ever trust her enough to carry on with the wedding you've been planning? As an experienced world traveler on a gap year before college, you've researched places you want to visit that your very concerned parents have "forbid" you to consider -- like Iran, Turkmenistan, Iraqi Kurdistan, Lebanon, and Russia. You believe the benefits of seeing these destinations up close outweigh the risks and are determined to go, but how can you alleviate your parents' worry and depart with their blessing? As a third-year medical student, you'll be graded on your performance under pressure working full time in a hospital. The problem? You're a very feminine female with a petite build and a soft voice, and getting peers and patients to take you seriously has been an issue. How can you thrive in a field where masculinity is deemed equal to competency? Have any questions, comments, or stories you'd like to share with us? Drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com! Jon Acuff (@jonacuff) is the New York Times bestselling author of seven books, including his Wall Street Journal #1 bestseller, Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done. [Note: This is a previously broadcast episode from the vault that we felt deserved a fresh pass through your earholes!] What We Discuss with Jon Acuff: Why are only eight percent of new year’s resolutions realized? (Incidentally, that’s the same percentage of applicants accepted to Juilliard.) The harm perfectionism causes and what we can do to navigate through it. The Planning Fallacy and how it causes overachievers to fail before even beginning. Strategic Incompetence: why you should deliberately be terrible at some things. 631: Amanda Catarzi | Overcoming Cult Life and Sex Trafficking

631: Amanda Catarzi | Overcoming Cult Life and Sex Trafficking

Amanda Catarzi survived a cult-dominated childhood and abuse at the hands of sex and labor traffickers. In the years since, she has helped law enforcement bust trafficking rings, written federal anti-trafficking legislation, and worked to save countless victims. What We Discuss with Amanda Catarzi: 70 percent of human trafficking victims are women, and 30 percent are men. They usually die (overdose or violence being primary causes) within seven years. How Amanda's upbringing in an isolated cult that matched teen brides with middle-aged men and preached absolute male dominance over them programmed her to consider abusive relationships normal. Why moving to the other side of the country didn't turn out to be an escape from the childhood traumas that haunted Amanda, but just the next chapter of her abuse by expert manipulators. How training as an MMA fighter was the perfect cover for this abuse as no one questioned Amanda's bruises and black eyes when her "coach" trafficked her out to violent johns. How Amanda escaped this dire situation and has used her experience to help legislators and law enforcement save other trafficking victims (especially children), and what we can do to help stem the tide of abuse that may be going on in our own neighborhoods in plain sight.
