DNSYE - DEREK PAYNE SPECIAL - PART TWO
We start part two by look at a defeat to that lot up the road (don’t worry we don’t do that EVER AGAIN!) and discuss when a dressing room has favourites but also a cautionary tale of playing youngsters too early in the wrong game, although sometimes unavoidable with a small thin squad (sound familiar!). Derek talks us through how injuries can affect your mood and ultimately a player’s career. We discuss the number of different forwards that Glenn Roeder was forced to field from the bench, on loan and from the youth team to try to cover for the loss of Paul Furlong sold to Chelsea. We chat about Craig Ramage whose confidence and technique lit up the performances for many supporters and also laugh about Craigs constant struggle with gravity in the opposition’s penalty box. Transfers, tactics, injuries, the depth of the squad in the mid-nineties and the good side of agents now are discussed. Derek’s post Watford career, move back into non-league and coaching plus move into radio and co-commentating and the lads offer tips as to how to not to co-commentate are covered and finally we ask about a certain nickname. This podcast is sort of sponsored by Lurpack – or so you’d think! COYH! This Podcast has been created and uploaded by Do Not Scratch Your Eyes. DNSYE - DEREK PAYNE SPECIAL - PART ONE
We talk to Derek “Freddie!” Payne who played for the Hornets in mid 90’s in a team that was very easy to like due to the characters in it. We here about how Derek’s love of the game started and how his Dad took him to Vicarage Road before taking him to QPR. From his journey through Southampton’s academy and dropping into non-league, blaming Les Ferdinand for getting signed by QPR, to gaining promotion to the league as captain with Barnet and stories of fights with motivational Barry Fry and tales of tables of cash with the notorious chairman Stan Flashman, getting to the Championship with a very strong Southend United side including Tommy Mooney and Jason Lee – Derek shares the up’s and down’s of trying to make it as a pro footballer in the game including the difference between a Barry Fry side and a Peter Taylor side. We find out how players were tapped up before mobile phones and the internet and how, somehow, it involved a caravan holiday! We cover the advent of the midfield diamond which had some very revered players in it but resulting in a lack of wingers which, Derek observes, may have contributed to a certain forward failing to fire! We remember a first season which saw us play Jurgen Klinnsman’s Tottenham team three times including a massive preseason game and a ding dong two legged League Cup tie (Ian Walker tainting his Dad’s good name at Watford!) that we watch with Derek and the memories come flooding back. Coming soon Part 2 We watch some of a game that we would normally block out the memory of… and talk about the politics of the dressing room and at football clubs, dealing with periods on the sidelines with injuries, a certain nickname, coaching and radio work. DNSYE - SEASON SO FAR - SO WHAT? (and a lot of discussion about bread related items)
Justin, Carlos and Pete reflect on the first month of the season in terms of results, performances and transfers and or the lack of them. We ask the question asked by Steve in terms what people want the club to be. As its international break we obviously discuss the possibility of Paul Ince becoming a new manager and how upset that will make Pete. Questions about Bachmann, Captaincy and the Coventry game are given the usual inadequate discussion before we start banging on about Nice “N” Spicy Nik Naks and other bad breath inducing corn snacks and whether Carl has been vinegarized. Justin is challenged on how many legendary goalkeepers he can remember, and Pete argues that Steve Sherwood deserves legendary status for keeping other goalkeepers at the top of their game. Favourite draws and worst own goals and strange goals are recalled (Pete’s all come from about 1920!), Where do we stand on peshwari naan’s, why restaurants seem to be trying to kill Carlos and which of your hosts is a member of the Prawn Sandwich brigade?!? We chat about the futility of entering the football content awards despite Justin’s protests (and a big thank you to everyone who has voted for us), Carl wants to get a tape measure to see how big everyone’s tripod is. Pete momentarily tries to remember that this is a vaguely football related podcast telling us all about the womens games so far this season before Carl asks if we know about elbow skin and well... something else…… COYH! TWITTER SPACE - PART 2 COVENTRY CITY 3 - 3 WATFORD
Alex laments going ahead 3 times and then giving away three extremely avoidable self-inflicted equalizers and disagrees with Pete’s continual plan to “un-invert” everyone, Jason joins us having enjoyed the rollercoaster of a game and points out how Sierralta’s game changes after a yellow card. Wendover joins us in the glass half empty camp after being disappointed with the lack of incomings in the transfer window and asks can we play Man City football with the players that we do have without hurting ourselves as much as the opposition. What happened to the direct approach that Ismael was known for and questions the wall for the first equalizer, Pete starts talking about the blind back pass and why you don’t do that in your own final third (like everyone doesn’t know that!). Ant joins us with his own classic theme tune from 80’s and tells us about trying to follow the game via normal radio and only get snippets as the mainstream media seem unsurprisingly uninterested in a mid-table Championship match. Alan joins us having attended an FA Cup Qualifying round game at Sherwood Colliery and discusses strange words never heard before – what an earth is “a neutral foul”. Pete bangs on about sin bins in womens football and asks if understands anything about the game but fortunately Alan explains the background to this, but the “neutral foul” is still a mystery as Alan couldn’t understand the locals! Mike comes on completely horse from shouting at Coventry and compliments Coventry’s Palmer and asks why we didn’t try to stop him, says good things about Bayo and tells us about his charity running. We go through the 5 word and long form reviews as always. Thanks as always to all the contributors, listeners and of course lurkers! COYH! TWITTER SPACE - PART 1 COVENTRY CITY 3 - 3 WATFORD
We jump straight into the calls with Rich who is very upset at the defensive performance and is perplexed at Martins removal, Pete wants to invert the inverted number eights (again), Charlie joins and he and Pete talk about last week, clear the air and then have a very good chat including the words“Sunday League defending”, “Row Z” in terms of the defence but a pleasing review of the forward line including the front line of Ince, Martins and Rajovic and asks – do we have to take Martins off when he is having such a good game. Plus is Bachmann’s confidence affected by the way that he AND his back line are being asked to play. We hear from Sky Blue Hub who were also reeling from a bonkers afternoon of football and get the opposition view in terms of goals scored and conceded and we ask how we compare to other teams they’ve faced this championship season. We have exciting news about Monkeys and Forests – sort of! Caity joins us with a positive view and attributes the result to individual mistakes rather than a systematic issue and suggests that Keith Stroud of Luton seemed to be less than fair. Jack joins form the US and reinvents the midfield into a diamond sending Pete all misty eyed banging on about the 90’s again! COYH! THE OPPOSITION VIEW - Coventry City (Away)
Dave joins us for the third time to about Coventry and on this occasion comes on dressed as some kind of Midlands based Ewok in tribute it seems to one of their new signings. Once we stop insulting our guest for no apparent reason, we run the collective postmortem over the Championship Play Off final, work out quite how quick got shot of the offending penalty taker and where at the Ricoh (or whatever it is called) they likely dropped him off the bus. We talk about how Luton are getting on in the Prem with no sense of glee at all – well maybe a bit, Viagra use at West Ham and finally reluctantly we talk about the early season form and the transfer coming and goings including how do you replace Gyokeres and Hamer? Pete has a go at mispronouncing all the new Coventry signings and then we discover why nearly no one will be wearing a replica shirt despite having paid for one! We get to the increasingly bizarre prediction league and find out where John has been out and about this week with his predictive Backgammon set and welcome Jarvis Cocker (Spaniel) into the league after a superb debut last week!! Finally with the transfer window closing we ask what we and Coventry might hope for but also what they expect. Justin shares his personal pain from watching Watford last season – again! COYH! TWITTER SPACE - PART TWO WATFORD 0 - 1 BLACKBURN ROVERS
More fan discussion including Mark asking how we can get behind the team in the stadium, Rio (who had become a twitter viral sensation within hours due to his shirt) talks about the pace of the game and our lack of end product before bringing us up to date on the amputee tournament he took part in in Poland earlier in the month. John calls from the windy common wondering how we managed to lose a chess match of a game that we seemed to be largely dominating. Neal concurs with the statistical domination but questions our purpose, aggression, and movement – are we too predictable and do we need to vary our attacking style despite looking promising in many areas. Analysing the squad Neal calls out a number of areas where we might all hope to see some strengthening before the window closes this coming Friday. We start going through the 5 word reviews until Sean comes on to expand on his own 5 word review as eloquently as ever and then announces that he would change the formation and talks us through playing two up front.
