Ep. 2107 Cameron Jones and Claudia Stern | Everybody Needs A Bit Of Scienza
Welcome to Episode 2107 of the Italian Wine Podcast, where Professo Scienza takes questions from the international wine community and answers them in his own inimitable way! These shows are generally in the Italian language. Today’s questions about reincarnation and the olfactory impact of wine come from Cameron Jones and Claudia Stern. Today’s questions: If you could be reincarnated as an Italian grape variety, what would it be and why? Se potesse reincarnarsi in un vitigno italiano, quale sarebbe e perché? We have learned from the Greeks to rediscover the sense of smell and of course taste. If there is a wine that touches your senses, is that the best? How many times in your life have you tasted a wine and changed your mind and taken a step forward in pure sensations and in your philosophical approach? More about Professor Scienza: Professor Atillio Scienza is the one who checks all the facts and regulates when we mistakenly type “Verdicchio” instead of “Vermentino.” He is a full professor at the University of Milan in the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences where he teaches courses on genetic improvements to the vine; he also teaches Viticulture in the Master’s program of the University of Turin in Asti. He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of physiology, agricultural techniques, and vine genetics. As the author of over 350 publications on vine and viticulture in national and international journals, you can bet he knows his stuff! Ep. 2106 Massimo Boccoli, Claudio Bergamasco, Giovanni Mantovani | wine2wine Business Forum 2023
Welcome to Episode 2106, where we present a session recording from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. Today’s episode is entitled “New Economic and Financial Tools for Winery Strategic Development” and features Massimo Boccoli, Claudio Bergamasco, Giovanni Mantovani. Italian Wine Podcast is proud to be a media partner of wine2wine Business Forum and is pleased to present this series of market-focus sessions, recorded in Verona in November 2023. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and wine professionals from around the world, providing an opportunity to network, develop and expand their wine business worldwide. About the session: The wine-producing company sector tends to be characterized by significant investments and high working capital absorption. In this context, efficient management of working capital through financial instruments typical of Supply Chain Finance can be the way to generate cash internally, promoting prospective growth and value creation. About the hosts: Giovanni Mantovani joined the Veronafiere staff in 1985, later assuming the position of General Manager from 1998 to 2022. He is among the minds who developed major international events such as Vinitaly, Marmomac, Fieragricola, Progetto Fuoco, LetExpo, Samoter, and Fieracavalli. Since 2014 he has been a board member of UFI (the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry. In 2014/2015, he was appointed as a member of the Scientific Committee for the Wine Pavilion - Expo Milano 2015 by the Minister of Agriculture. He currently works as a consultant (senior advisor) particularly for the wine & food sector. He is President of the Fondazione della Comunità Veronese. Claudio Bergamasco graduated in environmental forestry at the Faculty of Agriculture in Padua. In 2011 he was added to a working group active in the field of subsidized financing for agro-industrial and agricultural firms. In 2018, he became one of the managing partners of the consulting firm Studio 3A Srl, providing services of subsidized financing for capital, promotional and research & development investments. In 2020, together with other partners, he founded Gate 39 Srl, operating today in the field of regional, government and European financing focused on the agro-industrial and agricultural industry. Massimo Boccoli has worked as a consultant for financial intermediaries and structured finance at major Italian banks. He then continued his career in supply chain finance, corporate restructuring, and credit mediation. The transversality of his experiences enabled him to realize the misalignment that exists between the financial needs of manufacturing companies - increasingly sophisticated - and the offerings of the consulting and advisory sector - purely relational and highly segmented. His goal at Hoshin is to realign the financial response to the real needs of companies through innovative product offerings. Ep. 2105 Michele Longari interviews Cecilia Longo | Clubhouse Ambassadors’ Corner
Welcome to Episode 2105 of the Italian Wine Podcast with Stevie Kim’s Ambassadors’ Corner on Clubhouse. In this episode Michele Longari interviews Cecilia Longo of premium Italian wine merchant Longo 1961. These sessions are recorded on Clubhouse and reproduced here on the Italian Wine Podcast! The focus of today’s conversation is less on the production and more on the commercial, logistics and marketing side of wine. Sometimes, we tend to forget that once the wine has been bottled, there is still a lot of work to be done by many different players before the wine actually reaches our glass. The interview with Cecilia will hopefully give listeners a clearer understanding of what happens behind the scenes! Co-Moderator - Michele Longari Until 10 years ago I was working as a computer engineer in Emilia Romagna. Although my daily job was in a different industry, I already had a deep-rooted passion for good wine and food. In fact, I was spending most of my spare time and holidays traveling around the regions of Italy to learn more about the local cuisine and traditional wines. Since I was becoming more and more passionate about wine, I decided to start the professional sommelier diploma course with the Italian Sommelier Association, with the main idea of learning something more about wine and, at that time, I was not even planning to take the final exams. Then, the more I was involved with wine and the less I wanted to be involved with computers and coding (who can blame me?!), and so I eventually ended up taking the AIS Sommelier Diploma in 2013 then, the very same year, I moved to the UK and started an MSc programme in Wine Business Management at the Royal Agricultural University. While I was finishing my masters dissertation, I accepted a job offer from Hay Wines, a small independent British wine merchants and importers, and now after eight years I am still working for the same company. My official role is purchasing director, and my main responsibilities are purchasing strategy and imports management. Guest Moderator: Michele Longari Facebook: @MicheleTLongari Instagram: @micheletlongari Twitter: @MicheleTLongari LinkedIn: @micheletlongari Website: haywines.co.uk Guest Bio - Cecilia Longo: Born in 1995, Cecilia has a love-at-first-sight relationship with the captivating world of the dining table and joined the family business, Longo, at eighteen years old. The company was founded in 1961 in Legnano (MI) by Consiglio Longo. His vision was passed on to his children, Osvaldo, Giovanni, and Paola, who opened a wine shop and then expanded the business to become leaders in corporate gourmet gift-giving. In 2006, they decided to focus on the commercialization of Italian wine around the world. Today, Longo exports over 40 wineries to 30 countries worldwide. Cecilia oversees product selection, marketing, and international market development, building on the family legacy and keeping the tradition alive while propelling the company toward new international markets. Ep. 2104 Denise Marrone of Agricola Gian Piero Marrone | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to episode 2104 of the Italian Wine Podcast, and episode 158 of Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon. Marc’s guest today is Denise Marrone of Agricola Gian Piero Marrone, a family-run winery that can be found in Annunziata near La Morra, in the middle of the Langhe of Barolo. The winery is awarded the Best Italian Wine (Banco BPM) Trophy for Barolo Docg Bussia 2019 in 5StarWines – the Book wine selection in 2024. More about today’s guest: For over a century: four generations of passion, tenacity and hard work. The origins Pietro Marrone was born in 1887, to a family that already cultivated grapes for the production of wine. Very passionate and extremely ambitious from an early age. In 1910, at the age of 23, he asked his father Edoardo if he could cultivate some vineyards using techniques that were revolutionary at the time. The second generation Carlo was born in 1924 and, along with his brothers Paolo and Michele and their sister Mariuccia, helped his father Pietro to expand the company, both in terms of quantity and quality. After the Second World War, Carlo resumed his work in the vineyard and in the cellar with even greater passion than before. The wines became better and better and the farmhouse became known in the village as “Cascina Carlot”. The third generation Gian Piero was born in 1955. The wine gene had become part of the family’s DNA, passed down from generation to generation, so, when he finished high school, he devoted himself to the production of wines with the same passion as his father. The time was ripe to plant native white grapes in the vineyards: Arneis, Favorita and Moscato, in addition to the red varieties Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo, and of course Nebbiolo for Barbaresco and Barolo. The fourth generation: Sorelle Marrone Looking ambitiously to the future with a traditional heart Gian Piero’s three daughters, Denise, Serena and Valentina, work alongside Gian Piero to achieve increasingly ambitious goals.
