The Fine Cotton Affair - Part 1 – Sports Bizarre

The Fine Cotton Affair - Part 1 – Sports Bizarre

We are back, and with the most requested topic we've ever had.

In Australia, the two most famous racehorses are Fine Cotton and Phar Lap but for opposite reasons.

When a handful of colourful racing types attempted to swap the poor horse Fine Cotton, for the much faster Dashing Solitaire, it all seemed so easy.

What followed was an inept, sometimes tragic, sometimes hilarious slow-moving disaster, with a mystery still at the heart of it.

We are doing two live Sports Bizarre shows on in Melbourne in February at the Corner Hotel. The first show is sold out and there’s only a few left for the second night. You can buy tickets here:

Tuesday 27th February

We are kicking off at the Corner Hotel because it’s a two minute walk from Mick’s house, but don’t worry if you’re not in Victoria, we will be announcing more dates in the near future.

Resources

There is a heap of newspaper reports from the time, and ever since then there’s been interviews galore with many of the main players. That said, there are still a few who have remained very quiet on this topic.

The most recent book and the one worth grabbing if you want to dive deeper is The Fine Cotton Fiasco by Peter Hoysted and Pat Sheil.

Chance by Andrew Rule also has a chapter on it which is great as all his work is.

The Worst Event in Olympic History – Sports Bizarre

The Worst Event in Olympic History – Sports Bizarre

The 1904 Olympics in St Louis, Missouri, were a disaster in every way possible. Held over six months alongside the World’s Fair, it had a human zoo and a ‘savage Olympics’ pitting various indigenous groups against each other. But the marathon would be the biggest mess; competitors were refused water, runners were chased off course by dogs, there was cheating, several near deaths, and the first recorded case of doping in Olympic history. Titus O’Reily and Mick Molloy look back at the worst event ever held at an Olympics and find their favourite Olympic competitor, a Cuban named Félix de la Caridad Carvajal y Soto. Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding – Sports Bizarre

Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding – Sports Bizarre

Days out from the 1994 US Figure Skating Championships, Nancy Kerrigan had just finished training at the Cobo Arena in Detroit when a man approached and hit her with a metal object just above her knee. Almost immediately, the FBI would identify four men as behind the attack, all linked to Kerrigan’s main rival, Tonya Harding. Titus and Mick look back on the motley crew that carried out the attack, how they managed to botch almost every part of their plan and left a trail of clues so wide that anyone on the planet could have solved the case. Doping in the Tour De France – Sports Bizarre

Doping in the Tour De France – Sports Bizarre

From the first Tour De France, riders were putting all kinds of things in their bodies, caffeine, strychnine, cocaine and alcohol. Drugs were so much part of the sport that the 1930 rulebook, given to all riders, reminded them that drugs would not be provided by the organisers. Titus O’Reily and Mick Molloy look at the use of doping in the Tour De France from 1903 until the Festina Affair in 1998, the year before Lance Armstrong ‘won’ his seven consecutive yellow jackets.   Titus O'Reily and Mick Molloy are excited to announce the launch of Bizarre Plus, the new Membership program for even more Sports Bizarre. Tour De France, the Early Years – Sports Bizarre

Tour De France, the Early Years – Sports Bizarre

The early years of the Tour De France were a hot mess, with a spiked bottle of lemonade, itching powder put in cyclists’ shorts, riders taking rides in cars and trains, attempted murder and pitched battles between cyclists and spectators. Beginning in 1903 as a marketing exercise to boost the circulation of the newspaper L’Auto, the first was won by Maurice-François Garin, who knocked an opponent off their bike, and then jumped on the wheels so they couldn’t ride it anymore. The second Tour would result in the top four finishers all being disqualified, with the reasons never made public. Titus O’Reily and Mick Molloy look at the early years of the Tour De France, and how those bizarre early races would set the tone for one of the most popular sporting events in the world. The Strangest Trade in the History of Sport – Sports Bizarre

The Strangest Trade in the History of Sport – Sports Bizarre

On March 4, 1973, it was announced New York Yankees pitchers Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson would be holding separate press conferences that day. Both men would be announcing a trade, nothing unusual in baseball where players move around more than children in the back seat of a car. The assembled media got ready to learn where each of them was being traded. Mike Kekich explained the trade to the media. The two pitchers were not trading teams, they were trading wives. Not just wives, their entire families, even their dogs. Former teammate Jim Bouton, would later remark, “I can see trading your wife, but the dog?” Titus O’Reily and Mick Molloy look back at one of the most bizarre sports stories of all time and discuss how it all worked out for the couples involved, plus a detour onto Yankees owner George Steinbrenner’s haircut policy.
