The Truth: Is Simone Inzaghi the Most Underrated Manager in the World?

The Truth: Is Simone Inzaghi the Most Underrated Manager in the World?

It's time for The Truth!

When we talk about the best managers in world football, certain names come up over and over again (and rightly so) - the likes of Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti. But you'll also hear shouts for Diego Simeone, for Mikel Arteta, Antonio Conte, Unai Emery and many more.

Rarely though, is the name of Simone Inzaghi mentioned - despite his Inter being fairly dominant in Serie A, his exceptional record in cup competitions as both Lazio and Inter boss, and the fact that his team play some of the best football in Europe when they're on song.

But why? We dig into Inzaghi's tactics, his personality, his teams; and try to understand what's holding him back from being heralded as one of the bastions of this generation - and if there is anyone else deserving of the 'most underrated' crown that we're giving out.

So is Inzaghi undervalued because he's reluctant to take praise, because he doesn't love the limelight, or because people genuinely believe this Inter side isn't very good? The Truth is somewhere in the middle...

Ranking the Ballon d'Or Contenders for 2022/23

Ranking the Ballon d'Or Contenders for 2022/23

Hello Rank Squad! It's that time of year again, where the crème de la crème of world football dust out the old tuxedos and head for Paris for the glittering Ballon d'Or ceremony - the home of the famous incident where Virgil van Dijk was once asked if he wears aftershave on the pitch by some eejits. We look through the 30 man shortlist for football's most prestigious individual prize and whittle it down to 10, before giving our thoughts on the ranking of the top 10 footballers in the world last year. Will Lionel Messi claim his 8th trophy? Will Erling Haaland's ridiculous goal record put him on top of the pile? Or could World Cup Golden Boot winner Kylian Mbappé finally get his hands on the trophy after his sixth nomination - a reminder that he's only 24. We look through it all, and the best of the rest. Sacking or Saving Europe's Under-Fire Managers (v3)

Sacking or Saving Europe's Under-Fire Managers (v3)

Hello Rank Squad! It's tough out there as a manager. You can be winning trophies and be the designated Chosen One one minute, and then on the verge of losing your job the next. It's tough, it's brutal, but it's the way football works, so we wanted to revisit an old staple and take a look at some of the managers under the cosh this season, and what the future holds for them. We visit Jose Mourinho at Roma, Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, Maurizio Sarri at Lazio, Sean Dyche at Everton, Andoni Iraola at Bournemouth, and Maurice Steijn at Ajax, to take a look at what their situations are right now and assess whether they have the potential to turn things round at their respective clubs. Before that though, we take a look back at last week's episode and how the teams we discussed have fared since, and in our Hot Takes section this week, Saber from Sydney throws around an idea as to how to stop time-wasting and make football more efficient. Ranking Interesting Trends We've Noticed This Season

Hello Rank Squad! It’s time to take a look back at some of the most interesting things that we’ve noticed in the new season, and so returning to the fold is our Head Coach, Mr. Harry Brooks, who is here to discuss some of the trends he’s picked up on from a coaching perspective.First off, we get his views on the revolution taking place under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur, a club very close to Harry’s heart, and just how Ange is shifting the perspective of Tottenham fans just months into his new regime. Then, it’s onto the main segment, where Harry talks us through five specific concepts that have jumped into the mainframe this season so far. We talk players not being positions, the dangers of over-coaching, the re-emergence of footballing mavericks, the use of data in player analysis, and the judgement of managers for playing (or not playing) out from the back. Finally, Dean and Jack give their thoughts on a spicy take from Rank Squad member Jordan, who things Fede Valverde is going to leave behind one hell of a legacy for both club and country. It's Ranks! And remember, if you’d like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
