One person who has recovered from COVID19 is the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. He returned to work yesterday almost a month after entering hospital. Yesterday he said that COVID19 is the biggest challenge that the country has faced since world war 2…Also in the UK, Oxford university has successfully used a covid 19 vaccine on monkeys. During the month of May the vaccine will be tested on 6000 people. The fact that the vaccine has worked on monkeys is not a guarantee that it will work on humans.Italy will reduce many lockdown measures from May 4th. Italy has had Europe’s longest lockdown, as it started seven weeks ago. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has said that it will be possible to visit family, but that parties and large gatherings will remain prohibited. Factories and offices will open from May 4th. Restaurants and cafes can open in June, but schools will not return until September.France and Holland will pay 10 billion euros to the airline Airfrance KLM. Most of the world’s airlines have suffered greatly since the pandemic begun, and many have asked their government for financial help.South Korea is slowly lowering restrictions, however they have a new problem. 222 Koreans have tested positive again for COVID 19, after recovering, and scientists aren’t sure why. It could be reactivation – that the person never completely defeated the virus. Or, it could be reinfection – that the person did recover, but contracted the virus again. The World Health Organization has said that it isn’t clear if reinfection is possible. Korea is exporting test kits to 120 countries. In other news, South Korea has said that they believe Kim Jong Un is alive and well, after rumours that the North Korean dictator was sick. Some factories have reopened in Bangladesh, defying a nationwide coronavirus lockdown. Most factories closed in late March, and many workers have been left without pay. Clothing is Bangladesh’s main export.Turkey will continue its long-weekend lockdowns. President Erdogan said yesterday that people should stay at home every Friday to Sunday until the end of May.How is lockdown affecting you? Director general Tedros Adhanom spoke yesterday of the need to continue children’s vaccinations against all infectious diseases….In Nigeria face masks have been made compulsory. Lockdowns will be eased from May 4th but a curfew will be imposed from 8pm to 6am. Non-essential travel between states remains prohibited. In Colombia, the mayor of Bogota has told people not to go back to work. This is in direct contrast to the message of President Duque, who has talked of easing restrictions. The Mayor of Medellin Daniel Quintero has said that two or three million people could be infected in the Medellin area, but testing rates remain low. In the United States it is suggested that Republicans are worried that President Trump has recently lowered the probability of winning the presidential election in November.
