Dr Sylvia Tara | Why we gain weight and what to do about it! KKP: 239

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Sylvia Tara. She holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from The University of California, San Diego, and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She was a healthcare management consultant with McKinsey & Company and has worked for the world's largest biotechnology companies. After an extended battle with fat, Dr. Tara became fascinated with its resiliency and embarked on a mission to better understand it. This book culminated in years of research and interviews with physicians, patients, and leading scientists. The Secret Life of Fat will forever change how you think about this misunderstood organ. Dr. Sylvia Tara is the author of the book, The Secret Life of Fat. This new book brings together historical perspective and cutting-edge research to reveal fat's true identity: an organ critical to our health. In this episode, Dr. Sylvia Tara reveals the inspiration behind her fat research. We usually think fat is simply storing calories. What most people don't know is that fat serves many purposes. Also, there are different types of fats. We dive into everything you need to know about fat, including what's vital about leptin and adiponectin. Later, we discuss the difference between men and women when it comes to fat loss. Plus, we talk about which types of exercises will be critical on your health journey. / E P I S O D E S P ON S O R S PureForm Omega Plant Based Oils (Best Alternative to Fish Oil): http://www.purelifescience.com Use ben4 for $4.00 off. [00:30] About Dr. Sylvia Tara Sylvia gains weight really easily. Her whole life, she watches people eat whatever they feel like, drink whatever they want, and not gain any weight. So, Dr. Sylvia decided to understand fat once and for all. She went on a big expedition to really understand fat. She wanted to know why she would gain fat easier than other people. The Secret Life of Fat is based on all this research! We think of fat as storage for calories; however, it’s so much more than that. [02:25] What Is Fat? Fat is a complex endocrine organ that has multiple functions: Storing calories. Producing leptin – which has a great effect on our brains, our bones, and multiple organs. Creating adiponectin – which has a lot of impact on where our fat is stored. [03:25] What You Need to Know About Leptin Our fat produces this hormone called leptin. It's the biggest producer of leptin in the body, and fat releases it into the bloodstream. Once leptin goes to the bloodstream, it goes to your brain; it'll tell your brain that you’re overall satisfied. Basically, the brain will know that you are good, there's enough nutrition in the world, and you are okay. Leptin will also communicate with your muscles. It tells your muscles that it's okay to expend energy because you have enough nutrition. When we start to lose fat and begin to lose weight, say 10% or more, we reduce the amount of leptin we have. So, people who've lost 10% or more of their body weight respond enormously to food. Overall, once you've lost weight, you have to eat less than someone who's at that weight normally. It is why diets don’t work! [07:15] The Role of Adiponectin Adiponectin is more or less telling fat where to go. When we have dietary fat, adiponectin will guide the fat in our bloodstream to the right parts of our body. So there's different kinds of fat, there's white fat. It's right under the skin, it's in your thighs, buttocks, arms, and it's actually the safest places to deposit fat. If you're going to have some fat, those are the places to put it. There's also visceral fat; it sits underneath the stomach wall. It is the more dangerous fat that's nestled against the internal pancreas organ. There's brown fat – it burns calories instead of storing calories. Plus, there is beige fat – it that can turn brown when we exercise. Overall, adiponectin will help guide the fat you eat and put it into the right place. [09:20] How Exercise Can Help Adiponectin It’s around 20 hours of jogging a week to get adequate levels of adiponectin. That is when your body will start to shift around where your fat is. High-intensity interval training will also help raise your levels of adiponectin. You have to exercise a lot before it starts to affect you. It's best to work with your diet and do some exercise. Don't rely on exercise alone! [11:10] How To Get More Brown Fat Brown fat is actually used to create heat. We have brown fat around our heart; we have it around the clavicle areas and our spines. Having brown fat around those important areas is critical. These areas need to be heated even when we don't have exposure to cold. Beige fat, which was discovered last decade, is the fat that can turn brown through exercise. The more you exercise, the more you can increase your levels of brown fat. Exposure to cold will also increase your brown fat. [13:45] Women Produce 33% More Ghrelin Than Men After Exercise Women are designed just to have more fat. There are many reasons for this: Fat produces estrogen. Fat is linked to our reproducibility. When women exercise, they have a different reaction than men. Women’s bodies produce ghrelin after exercise, and it's a hormone that's released from your stomach. If you burn off 600 calories or so, women produce 33% more ghrelin than men. There's all kinds of dieting tips for women versus men because women are different. [17:30] How Women Can Lose Body Fat Women have to be really patient, and you have to understand where you are on the spectrum of fat. Everyone has an individual fat blueprint. You have to understand your fat, and you have to be really forgiving of yourself. Another issue with women is that they have something called dichotomous thinking. [22:05] The Role Of How To Use Intermittent Fasting For Fat Loss Our growth hormone peaks at night. So, fasting during the nighttime will benefit your body because eating mitigates growth hormone levels. You want growth hormones because it’s a great way to burn fat. If you sleep adequately, you're increasing your levels of leptin, which means you're going to be a little bit more satiated the next day during fasting. [26:30] Strategies To Keep Insulin At Bay Fiber will bring down insulin. Eating higher protein diets, lower carbs, and obviously not a ton of sugar will also help keep insulin at bay. Fasting enables you to manage insulin, and it helps with insulin sensitivity. [31:35] The Role of Genetics In Fat Storage To manage your fat, you have to work harder if you're at a genetic disadvantage. Some people tend to have a much higher appetite because they have a certain variant of the FTO gene. [35:30] How Environmental Factors Affect Fat The Four P’s: Pesticides Plastics Preservatives Parabens Overall, it's important to really watch what you eat and watch what you put on your body. Think about what's really in the food that you eat! [43:45] Testing Your Fat The best way to test your fat is a CT scan. Sadly, there is no easier way to find out. [48:20] Correlation Between Stress & Fat Stress is linked to abdominal fat. Exercise can be a perfect solution for people to lower their stress levels. AND MUCH MORE! Grounding: Reduce Inflammation, The Natural Blood Thinner | With Clint Ober : KKP 42

Grounding: Reduce Inflammation, The Natural Blood Thinner | With Clint Ober : KKP 42

Welcome to the Keto Kamp Podcast Episode 42 with Clint Ober!   Today, I am lucky to have here with me the CEO of EarthFX Inc. author, and someone who is continually working to spread awareness about grounding, Clint Ober.   Clinton Ober is CEO of EarthFX Inc., a research and development company located in Palm Springs. He first learned of grounding when marketing and installing Cable TV systems in Billings, Montana, in the early 1960s. A decade later, he formed Telecrafter Corporation and built it into the largest provider of cable installation services in the United States. This company specialized in the proper grounding of cable installations for safety and signal stability.   Following a health challenge in 1995, he retired and embarked on a personal journey looking for a higher purpose in life. During his travels, he noticed people wearing plastic and rubber-soled shoes that insulate the body from Earth. He wondered if no longer being naturally grounded could affect us.   The question led to an experiment that suggested grounding reduced pain and improved sleep. He developed a working hypothesis: Grounding normalizes the functioning of all body systems (Corollary: The body utilizes the Earth's electrical potential to maintain its internal electrical stability for the normal functioning of all self-regulating and self-healing systems).   Over the past twenty years, he has supported a host of research studies that collectively demonstrate that grounding reduces inflammation and promotes the normal functioning of all body systems.   In this episode, Clint and I talk about how grounding works and what the benefits are. First, Clint reveals his past health problems and what inspired him to start grounding. Plus, Clint talks about all the research and studies he has conducted over the past twenty years. He also describes the effects grounding can have on blood, sleep, and inflammation. Tune in!   This episode is sponsored by the world's healthiest coffee beans; Purity Coffee. When you connect anything to the Earth, it holds it at Earth’s potential; it reduces noise, fire, and charge. One day, Clint was having static problems. Intuitively, he wondered if the loss of contact with the Earth could be affecting his body. Everything in the body is electrical.   [12:45] Plastic Sole Shoes Clint says plastic sole shoes make us insulate ourselves from Earth. Insolating ourselves from the Earth is like not having enough oxygen. It became apparent that grounding people will make the pain go away.   [16:00] Electrical Surface Charge on Red Blood Cells When you touch the Earth, your body equalizes with the Earth. The red blood cells increase by a factor of 2.7 – an increase of 300%. Like little negative magnets, the cells repel each other – they can’t stick together. It prevents inflammation. As soon as you ground the body, inflammation disappears.   [18:00] Inflammation in the Body You can’t have pain unless you have inflammation first. Pain is a signal to the body and the brain that you have inflammation, and your body is on fire. Inflammation presents differently in various people based on their genetics and lifestyle. How does inflammation begin? If you have no access to electrons, your immune system will encapsulate the damage.   [22:20] Grounding with Nike Clint did work with Nike; whether it is true or not, Nike didn’t want to touch it. Nike said when people come into their stores and want a grounded shoe, they will start making a grounded shoe.   [23:00] Clint’s Health Problems Clint’s doctors revealed that he had an abscess in his liver. They said there wasn’t much they could do; he was young enough to get a new liver, but he didn’t have much time. When Clint woke up, he had no energy whatsoever because they cut out a majority of his liver. Clint could hardly get out of bed; it took him a week to walk to the kitchen and six months to make it one mile. It took less than one year for Clint’s liver to regenerate in size.   [26:00] The Definition of Grounding Grounding means returned to norma. In electrical terms, grounding means to be at Earth’s potential. The easiest thing to do is to take your shoes off and stand barefoot on the Earth. You can’t have inflammation on a grounded body. The hands and feet are equal; you can also put your hands on the Earth.   [29:00] Grounding Benefits While Wearing Leather Shoes If you are wearing moccasins, they can ground you almost instantly. Wearing shoes made from conventional leather will have no plastic in them whatsoever. The more you wear them means you will build up more salts and moisture in the shoes.   [30:10] The Most Surprising Benefit of Grounding The blood dramatically shifts; it changes. It’s hard to be upset or mad when your bare feet are on the ground.   [37:20] Grounding Effects on Cortisol During a study, everybody’s cortisol was way high in the morning and at night. The subjects would be fatigued during the day. After Clint grounded them, their cortisol levels evened out. At 4:00 am, your cortisol skyrockets – it’s what allows you to get out of bed in the morning. If you normalize cortisol, you will be able to sleep through the night. If your cortisol is elevated, you will not be able to sleep. Reducing cortisol means your sleep will improve. If you are living on the east coast timeframe, and you go to the west coast, your cortisol will be out of whack. By grounding, your jet lag will completely synchronize.   [42:00] Grounding After a Thunderstorm During a thunderstorm, there are electron imbalances. If you go to the top of a mountain and you’re grounded, then the atmosphere is positive, and the Earth is negative. The atmosphere is pulling electrons through your body like an antenna.   [44:35] Pets Benefit From Grounding Animals don’t have modern health disorders. All of the animals who live indoors with their owners have diseases like their owners. Once people began keeping horses in their barns, the horses started getting modern health disorders. People were no longer able to keep horses because of health issues.   [48:45] Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever! The book is published in 24 languages and digital format. It has never really been promoted; it’s just one of those books people share. This is the most important health discovery ever; the effects are so profound on our blood. If you have a health disorder, something is interfering with your immune system.   [52:45] How Long Should You Be Grounding The average person should be doing 30 minutes twice a day. Women need more grounding. If you have a health problem, you may need to ground for 16 hours a day.   [55:50] Grounding During Sleep You can put people on any program, but compliance is the toughest thing in the world. Grounding while asleep will make you a different person. Plus, you can put your sheets on over your grounding mat.     AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Visit Earthing Institute The benefits of Earthing Watch The Earthing Movie Get your Grounding Products Designed Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever! by Clint Ober This podcast is for information purposes only. Dr. Ryan Lowery | Building Muscle on Keto | Keto Done The Right Way : KKP 39

Dr. Ryan Lowery | Building Muscle on Keto | Keto Done The Right Way : KKP 39

Today, I am lucky to have here with me a CEO, author, president of the Applied Science and Performance Institute, and someone who is consistently working to spread awareness around the Ketogenic Lifestyle, Dr. Ryan P. Lowery.   He earned his BS and MS in exercise physiology and exercise and nutrition science from the University of Tampa and completed his doctorate work at Concordia University in Health and Human Performance with a focus on “The Effects of a Well-Formulated Ketogenic Diet and Exogenous Ketone Supplementation on Various Markers of Health and Body Composition in Healthy and Diseased Populations.”   Over his career, Ryan has published over 150 papers, abstracts, and book chapters on human performance and sports nutrition and has dedicated his life to educating the masses. In his free time, Ryan enjoys spending time with his best friend, Scoot the Keto Pup, jet skiing, and traveling around the world. The way to his heart is through a good glass of wine and Keto desserts.   In this episode, Ryan and I talk about his amazing story and what he is currently working on. First, Ryan reveals what ignited his passion for educating people on the importance of healthy eating. Then, Ryan explains the future of obesity and why inspired action is the only thing that will change the world. He also describes tips for eating Keto, why some people fail when trying the lifestyle, and how you can gain muscle. Tune in!   This show is sponsored by the World's Healthiest Keto Coffee beans, Purity Coffee. Get your bag of beans delivered to your door: www.ketokampcoffee.com , use the coupon code ketokamp for 10% off.   Grab the Keto Kickstart Guide for FREE: www.ketokickstartguide.com   // T I M E S T A M P S  [00:30] September 10, 2002 Ryan’s dad drove him down to the shore because something was wrong with his grandmother. When he got there, his grandmother had passed. His grandmother was obese, which ultimately contributed to her passing in her early 60’s. This initiated Ryan’s entire journey of educating people.   [03:45] The Future of Obesity The obesity trend in children is unacceptable. Obesity trends are not only in America, but it is also happening all over the world. At the end of the day, it takes inspired action.   [06:50] How Ryan Started with Keto Ryan is a self-proclaimed carboholic. After college, Ryan could no longer eat his normal amount of carbs. He realized his metabolism wasn’t the same. The first time Ryan started the keto diet, he felt terrible. Three times a day, he would make keto moose, and that was literally all he ate.   [10:00] Biggest Reason for the Keto Flu It is going to take time for your body to adjust to using fat as fuel. The use of electrolytes can mitigate a lot of the flu. Sodium has been demonized; however, you need to be salting everything. Some people can completely switch to keto, whereas other people need to transition to the diet slowly. Make habit changes to develop a long-term lifestyle.   [13:45] Building Muscle with the Ketogenic Diet You need to allow time for the adaptation period. The phase may be one to three weeks. Plus, you probably will not be training as hard. After you adapt, the ketogenic diet group will gain just as much muscle as individuals who are eating a carbohydrate diet. Each group ate the exact same amount of protein.   [17:40] Why People Fail with the Ketogenic Diet A lot of people do not have the right information about the ketogenic diet. Also, people have trouble understanding what constitutes a well-formulated ketogenic diet and how to get electrolytes. Eating keto isn’t about eating high-fat, it is about eating low-carb.   [20:10] Long-Term Keto Success Dial-in the electrolytes. Don’t be afraid of having tons of sodium. However, you don’t want table salt. Movement – if you want long-term benefits, you need some form of movement. This doesn’t have to be doing squats at the gym; you could be going for a walk or a hike once a day. Mindset – Ryan calls it intermittent eating rather than intermittent fasting. Find a place where you are comfortable.   [24:00] Working Out While Fasting If your goal is to become a bodybuilder, working out while fasting probably won’t help with that goal. Ryan recommends shifting your eating habits earlier. Many people skip breakfast, then eat lunch and dinner. Ryan says to eat a bigger breakfast and then eat a smaller dinner.   [27:35] The Ketogenic Bible The Ketogenic Bible: The Authoritative Guide to Ketosis makes understanding keto practical. Jacob Wilson and Ryan Lowery offer a comprehensive look at the ketogenic diet and the fat-burning state it induces, ketosis. Ryan’s favorite part of writing the book was looking up the history. For instance, Ryan found out the political motivations behind the reason’s society eats the way it does. Butter is back, and avocado sales are soaring.   [35:00] The Applied Science & Performance Institute   Their mission is to challenge current dogma in the health and human performance realms with new insight to effectively promote a healthy lifestyle and optimize physical performance. They want the information they find out from research to get out to the masses as soon as possible. To support the institute check out their website: The Applied Science & Performance Institute   [39:00] The Ketogenic Diet Puts You at a Metabolic Advantage  You are burning fat at a higher rate with ketosis. All calories are not the same. Carb calories vs. fiber calories are completely different. If you are trying to diet on a low-fat diet vs. a low-carb diet, the adherence rate to a low-carb diet is much higher. On a low-carb diet, people tend to eat fewer calories by nature.   [49:00] What Ryan is Most Excited About The potential we see in the neurological areas is so fascinating because keto is much more than a fat loss lifestyle. Keto provides a fuel source for the brain to utilize. Ryan works with NFL alumni. Some of them can’t leave their house without a monitor because they don’t know how to get home. Instead of attacking it with drugs, it could be their brain starving for energy.   [55:30] The Definition of Perfect Health Health is multifaceted. Living in a state of fulfillment and gratitude will take up a majority of our health. We could be in a poor state internally, but if we are fulfilled, then we are in a far better state than someone who is not.   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Visit Ryan’s Website Visit Ketogenic.com Watch Ryan’s KetoCon 2018 Talk Connect with Dr. Ryan P.
