EP006 (Part 2/4): The Theatres Trust with Claire Appleby and Jon Morgan - Part 2: Financial and sustainability aspects of theatres

In the episode 006 of the High Point podcast, we had the pleasure to visit Claire Appleby and Jon Morgan from the Theatres Trust at the Criterion Theatre which is in the middle of the West End in London. (Note: apologies if you can hear the tubes passing by and the building works. We tried to edit the episode the best we could to reduce their noise.) In Part 2, we discuss about the financial and sustainability aspects of theatres including:

  • the positive economic impact venues have on their surrounding areas. examples: wolfenstone theatres had a positive impact before the venue even opened and after Chester Story house opened a 15% increase in footfall was observed in the town centre (and it is directly attributable to the venue).
  • using theatres to get people into town centres.
  • we discuss Section 106: a Local Authority can ask a developer to provide facilities as a pay off for the impact created (examples are given for Streatham Hill Theatre and Theatre Peckham).
  • working with Local Authorities and developers.
  • getting the right theatre consultants and architects on projects.
  • gentrification and minimising it.
  • inclusion and making places & events more affordable.
  • the Green Book to help theatres be more sustainable.
  • the importance of retrofitting buildings
  • creating or redevelopping front of house areas to increase the revenues.
  • making theatres financially viable.

Part 3 is about the Theatres at Risk initiative and case studies.

New parts and episodes are released every Monday at 8:00 (UK time).
