It is the longest known cave system in the world, with over 400 miles of explored passageways. The cave is a part of the Mammoth Cave National Park, which was established in 1941 and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.The history of Mammoth Cave dates back thousands of years. Native American tribes, including the Shawnee, Cherokee, and others, have long recognized the cave's significance. They used it for various purposes, such as shelter, burial grounds, and ceremonial rituals. Evidence of their presence, including artifacts and drawings, has been discovered within the cave.European settlers began exploring Mammoth Cave in the late 18th century. In 1809, a slave named Stephen Bishop became one of the first guides to extensively explore and map the cave.
