384 - Gregg Hurwitz - Why We Tell Stories (Ralston College)

I recently had the privilege to visit Ralston College where I had a wonderful discussion with Gregg Hurwitz about meaning, art, and the future of culture. We also gave advice to the young students at Ralston College about navigating the life of an artist.

RALSTON COLLEGE: A revival and reinvention of the traditional university. A fellowship for anyone, anywhere who seeks the truth with courage.
While the review of applications for the 2025-26 year of their fully-funded Master's in the Humanities program has already begun, a small number of spaces remain for extraordinary candidates. Apply now: https://www.ralston.ac/humanities-ma

NEW COURSE: The Symbolic World Goes to Middle-Earth
Join us for an in-depth study of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Legendarium, where we'll explore his masterful use of medieval literary genres, Christian storytelling traditions, and hidden philology. This course, presented by Richard Rohlin, will guide you through Tolkien's vision for a "Mythology for England," examining his work as a complex tapestry of Universal History. Through this journey, we’ll also examine Tolkien’s use of epic poems, chronicles, and literary devices to craft a truly legendary vision of the past, present, and future. Thereafter, we'll look at how his work has inspired later authors of fantasy, shaped the genre more generally, and continues to aid our recovery of deeper, cosmological storytelling.

Original Video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7BQaQE_Jn8 The recurring image of the mass shooter is a symptom of celebrity culture, where our attention, rather than being taken by our transcendent purpose and common identity is rather tyrannized by a succession of excesses. This stems from a deep misunderstanding of what symbolism is. Symbolism is not so much an arbitrary allegorical representation of something, but rather the very pattern by which we notice meaning. I try to analyze some of the imagery he uses in his videos. This is based on Alex Jones' latest appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast. Original Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8BaY0e-VTQ Analyzing the symbolic meaning behind the resurgence of flat earth theories and their adherents who stem from all types of backgrounds. The strange resurgence of the flat earth movement, which became stronger in the last few years because of the internet, has surprised and confused many as to how such a social movement could be possible today. I try to look at what such social change means for us. Support this channel: thesymbolicworld.com/support/ patreon: www.patreon.com/pageauvideos subscribestar: www.subscribestar.com/jonathan-pageau paypal: www.paypal.me/JonathanPageau The 20th century has both wielded an absolute assault on Christianity and its artistic tradition, but in the darkest moment, a few flames were lit, and the traditions were reborn, spawning a new liturgical art which is flowering and still gaining strength today. Looking at the first glimmers like Leonid Ouspenky, Fotis Kontoglou and then moving towards the more recent artists, I finish by showing some of my own work and relating how my own story mirrors the general rediscovery of the ancient Christian Tradition.
