Serving up Season 6 of Lush Life
Daffodils are my favorite flower, and it seemed that last year’s lockdown began, just as the daffodil season ended. What does that mean? I don’t know, but this year, as the daffodils begin their new season, well, so am I!I’m Susan Schwartz, your drinking companion, and this is Lush Life Podcast, every week we are inspired to live life one cocktail at a time.Next Tuesday, I bring you Season 6 of Lush Life. Out of necessity, lockdown made me a home bartender. As I sat there sipping my handmade G&T, I knew that if I were going to survive lockdown, as well as make myself anything more than a two-ingredient cocktail, it was time to brush up on my at-home bar skills. I began grilling my guests for their advice. This season, I go one step further. Now instead of asking just for their top tips for the home bartender, I want to know everything. So welcome to my How to Drink season. We’ll be dissecting a particular spirit, a tool, a garnish to learn everything we can about it, from its history to, most importantly, how to use it to make fantastic cocktails. We’ll be talking flavor, Calvados, Liqueurs, Reyka Vodka, and so much more with some of my past Lush Lifers, as well as lots of new guests!I will also be learning how to read again - opening those dogeared cocktail books I’ve been devouring in the past year with the geniuses who wrote them.So join me next week when class is in session. The Avallen & Tonic is our cocktail of the week!Ingredients50ml Avallen CalvadosTonic WaterSlice of AppleMethodFill a Highball glass with iceAdd 50ml of Avallen calvadosTop with your favorite tonic!Garnish: apple wedgeYou’ll find this recipe, plus all the cocktails of the week, at ALushLifeManual.com, where you’ll also find all the ingredients in our shop. -----Become a supporter of A Lush Life Manual for as little as $5 - all you have to do is go to buymeacoffee.com/lushlife.Lush Life Merchandise is here - we’re talking t-shirts, mugs, iPhone covers, duvet covers, iPad covers, and more covers for everything! How to Follow Signs in Atlantic Canada With Alex Wrathell and Steve Murphy
It is hard to believe it happened to both our guests - but it did. They saw a sign posted on a wall, stopped, wrote down the number for more inquiries, and actually rang that number. Now, thanks to great signage in Atlantic Canada, on the show today, we have a Head Distiller for an award-winning distillery in Nova Scotia and the owner of one of the most successful cocktail bars on Prince Edward Island.I’m Susan Schwartz, your drinking companion, and this is, Lush Life Podcast, every week we are inspired to live life one cocktail at a time. We’re back today with the second of the two episodes sponsored by Atlantic Canada - the eastern part of Canada that borders on the Atlantic Ocean and includes the four provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. First, we head to Nova Scotia to speak with Alex Wrathell, the Head Distiller of Compass Distillers, and then we drive over the bridge to meet Steve Murphy, owner of the cocktail bar on Prince Edward Island, Slaymaker & Nichols. When I think of Nova Scotia, I think beautiful coastlines adorned with quaint lighthouses, succulent lobster dishes caught straight from the sea, and catching a glimpse of majestic whales, puffins, and seals. The province has an amazing wine scene and some of the world’s most beautiful vineyards, but we are here to talk about their spirits and who better to guide us but Alex.As we drive over one of the longest bridges in the world, we come to Prince Edward Island, or PEI as the locals call it. Known for its red beaches, beautiful farmland, and charming towns, PEI is also famed for its shellfish, lobsters, and oysters, and to accompany that amazing food, the island is home to the incredible bar that is Slaymaker and Nichols. One fateful day, our guest, Steve Murphy, owner of that said bar, also saw a sign - this time, it was for a restaurant for sale and just as he was about to move to Honduras! Guess where he settled? Our first Cocktail of the week is the one I was enjoying with Alex during our chat - the Compass Distillers Paper Plane:INGREDIENTS 1½ oz Compass Distillers Nova Scotia Rye 1½ oz amaro Nonino or Meletti 1½ oz Aperol1½ oz fresh lemon juice, strainedMETHODAdd all of the ingredients to a shakerAdd iceShake, shake, shakeStrain into a coupe glass. You can find the “Water for Elephants” by Slaymaker & Nichols, plus all the cocktails of the week, at alushlifemanual.com, where you’ll find all the ingredients in our shop.Full Episode Details: https://alushlifemanual.com/how-to-follow-signs-in-atlantic-canada-----Become a supporter of A Lush Life Manual for as little as $5 - all you have to do is go to buymeacoffee.com/lushlife.Lush Life Merchandise is here - we’re talking t-shirts, mugs, iPhone covers, duvet covers, iPad covers, and more covers for everything! How to Use Atlantic Canada’s Best Ingredients with Dan Meades & Sebastien Roy
Welcome back to Lush Life. It’s a new year, and Lush Life is back to take on 2021.The next two episodes are sponsored by Atlantic Canada, which is the eastern part of Canada that borders on the Atlantic Ocean and includes the four provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Not only is it absolutely gorgeous, but for our purposes today, the folks there are serving up some great cocktails using some of Atlantic Canada’s best ingredients.I’m Susan Schwartz, your drinking companion, and this is, Lush Life Podcast, every week we are inspired to live life one cocktail at a time.First up, we head to Newfoundland and Labrador to chat with Dan Meades, co-founder of The Third Place Cocktail Co., and then we jet off to New Brunswick to meet Sebastien Roy, founder of Distillerie Fils du Roy.Newfoundland and Labrador have incredible landscapes, vibrant cities and quaint, historical ports, plus awe-inspiring mountain ranges, rivers, waterfalls, winding coastlines, and some great tonics, thanks to Dan. After traveling all over Africa for work, he developed a love of Cinchona bark, the main ingredient in tonic water. Returning home, he just couldn’t find the exact product he wanted for his Gin and Tonic, so decided to create his own. Thus The Third Place Cocktail Co was born, but it almost wasn’t.As we move southwest to New Brunswick, we delve into the hidden gem of Atlantic Canada with its beautiful coastline, charming fishing towns, and epic national parks. It’s also home to Canada’s oldest farmer’s market in Saint John, which promises some pretty amazing local beers and spirits. Our guest, Sebastien Roy, is one of those making award-winning beers and spirits. He is owner and president, master-distiller and master-brewer of the first distillery in New Brunswick, the Distillerie Fils Du Roy, and it all began with his first taste of absinthe, well, maybe a bit before that. I’ll let Sebastian tell you.Since we have two guests, of course, we should have two cocktails of the week. The first is The Third Place Cocktail Company Tonic & Gin:INGREDIENTS 1 oz The Third Place Cocktail Co. Tonic2 oz of your favorite Gin (they prefer a London Dry gin)2oz of fizzy waterApple SliceMETHODAdd The Third Place Cocktail Co. Tonic and Gin to a rocks glass filled with iceAdd the fizzy waterStir to combineGarnish with an apple slice You can find the “I Am Not Driving” by Distillerie Fils du Roy, plus all the cocktails of the week, at alushlifemanual.com, where you’ll find all the ingredients in our shop.Full Episode Details: https://alushlifemanual.com/atlantic-canadas-best-ingredients-----Become a supporter of A Lush Life Manual for as little as $5 - all you have to do is go to buymeacoffee.com/lushlife.Lush Life Merchandise is here - we’re talking t-shirts, mugs, iPhone covers, duvet covers, iPad covers, and more covers for everything!
