579: IndyCar Returns! We talk to Al Unser Jr about his life, career and new book

AL UNSER JR has lived a double life - supreme racing talent and self-inflicted personal turmoil. He won two CART championships and won the Indianapolis 500 twice. It's rare for someone so successful in their motorsport career to open up on struggles with addiction, depression and abuse. His new book "Al Unser Jr: A Checkered Past" is a brutally honest look at some of the stories which racing fans will know, and some which he has never talked about before. Growing up in Indycar with a famous surname he was put on a pedestal. Nephew to Bobby, son of Al. The story of 'Little Al' would too often leave the pages of Autosport for the tabloids to chart the fall from grace of an American darling. JAMES NEWBOLD asks about how he was able to supress his anger at Emerson Fittipaldi after his crash in the 1989 Indy 500, and win an award for sportsmanship, when he had to fight every natural urge not to retaliate. He says what he thinks of the current crop of teams and drivers, and who impresses him the most. He also talks about the process of writing his book alongside noted author JADE GURSS and how he had to stop several times because he was in tears. Learn more about your ad choices. 493: British GP Review - Analysis from the UK and Netherlands

493: British GP Review - Analysis from the UK and Netherlands

The fallout from the frantic first lap, which saw Max Verstappen hit the tyre wall in a 51G impact at Copse corner and Lewis Hamilton receive a 10 second penalty, has continued for hours after the race. We wanted to understand some different perspectives on the podcast today, so first up we talk to Ben Anderson (Editor, GP Racing). Ben has driven many laps of Silverstone and competed in races where overtaking at Copse did not end up the same as we saw in Formula 1. Ben provides an insight into what it’s like behind the wheel when going into battle at that corner. Then we talk to Mike Mulder (Editor, motorsport.com Netherlands) to hear the Dutch perspective, and how they viewed the incident.  Ariana Bravo is fresh from interviewing the divers in the paddock and joined by Jake Boxall-Legge (Technical Editor, Autosport) to analyse the rest of the action at the British Grand Prix. 491: British GP Qualifying Report

491: British GP Qualifying Report

The crowds filled the Silverstone grandstands at the British Grand Prix as part of a trial project to re-open sporting events, and they saw plenty of action. That's because this weekend sees qualifying move to a Friday evening, which dictates the starting grid for Saturday's Sprint qualifying race. Whilst today wasn’t an official pole position (that honour goes to the winner of tomorrow’s race) it certainly had all the tension of a typical shootout. Ariana Bravo is back in the paddock hosting coverage for our colleagues at Formula 1, and she is joined today by Jonathan Noble (F1 Editor, motorsport.com) to discuss if this new format was a success.
