Envy or Emulation

In this episode of The Lone Bulwark, Stephen and Thomas dive into the nature of envy, its contrast with emulation, and the philosophical and theological roots of both. Why is envy considered uniquely shameful? How can righteous indignation be confused with envy in our political discourse? With references to Aristotle, Plutarch, the Bible, and literary examples like The Count of Monte Cristo, the hosts examine how envy arises among peers, how it can be weaponized in rhetoric, and how to channel it into virtue through emulation. Whether you’re navigating online discourse, professional rivalries, or personal struggles, this is a timely and rich exploration of one of humanity’s oldest vices—and its redemptive counterpart.
