How Do I Get My Own Attention? w/ Amishi Jha

How Do I Get My Own Attention? w/ Amishi Jha

There is a lot of content out these days about attention, attention spans, and distraction. What is with the seemingly dramatic deficit we have with attention? I know for myself, I seem to look for distraction and struggle to focus, even when I’m greatly interested in what I’m working on. I make it harder for myself when I have access to all my internet connected devices. I’m bringing back a conversation I had with an expert on the matter. Dr Amishi Jha is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami where she serves as the Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative. Amishi’s work has been featured at NATO, the World Economic Forum, The Dalai Lama's Vision Summit, and The Pentagon. She has received coverage in The New York Times, NPR, TIME, Forbes and more. She is the author of the book, Peak Mind, which we discuss in this show. Amish has spent nearly 30 years researching the science of attention through extensive work with the US Military, medical professionals, elite sports teams, and more to address the issue. Her TED Talk on "How to Tame Your Wandering Mind" has nearly 6 million views. We spend every day tuned in to screens whose sole purpose is to get our attention, to the degree we now must make a focus on, “How do I get my own attention?” Our attention is in many ways, the only power we have. The only thing we have an influence and impact on, the only thing we can help or find success in or enjoy, is what we give out attention to. We all know the concept of budgeting our money, and our time. Now we’re faced with budgeting our attention, and if we can’t control our attention, all hope seems lost toward much progress in our lives. That’s why we have Amishi with us now. 522: Lewis Howes - Get rid of your mask and be free

Lewis Howes is the Best selling author of “the school of greatness” and his podcast of the same name is a top 100 on planet earth. Today we are talking with him about Masculinity. Why? Lewis claims the majority of stress, anxiety, and pressure men feel is due to the masks they wear. Think of it as certain personas we fall or buy into, and get trapped in. Then live from in a limited fashion. I feel the topic may not at first sound like something you’ll be excited to listen to. But the question is, do you HAVE any stress or anxiety? Do you feel any pressure? Would you like to be free of it? If that sounds attractive, then you should be ecstatic to listen to this discussion today. Do you wear the mask of know-it-all, stoic, aggression? And ladies, though the masks may be geared toward the guys, you have your own and will get great value here. 521: Natural potential needs unnatural work to bring to mastery

521: Natural potential needs unnatural work to bring to mastery

What is our potential? I think we’d all agree we have more in us. How much more? 5%? 30%? 70%? That answer is not as important as the reality that whatever potential we have, it will not add up to much if we don’t work hard at it. But in our natural skills, talents, and abilities, we find the potential for mastery. In areas we do not have many inherent giftings, it will be hard, if not impossible, to find that mastery. In this show, we listen to a short message from Zig Ziglar on finding your full potential. From what I asked my facebook page at ‘agentkmiller’, “What is a skill, ability, or talent you have, that you've worked hard to increase and grow?” The comments were significant and pointed to some truths about having potential, and clarified that they are near nothing until we grow and refine them. We are walking through the 7 spokes of the Ziglar Wheel of Life with her and getting a behind the scenes glimpse at her personal, daily habits for success. Is she just wonder woman incarnate? Well, as you heard in show 519, she digs wonder woman. But no, she is not. She had no leg up more than you or me, but she had the desire and she did the work and she really, truly wants to help you and me. And it comes from daily habits.
