JOCELYN, 12, LURED FROM 7-ELEVEN, STRANGLED, UNCLOTHED IN CREEK: New Charges

Chanti Dixson gets off of work after midnight Sunday morning, and immediately orders an Uber to run a quick errand before heading home. When they make it to the drop-off location, Chanti asks the driver to wait for her a moment, she’ll order a second ride home when she finishes her errand. The driver agrees and Chanti orders the second ride.  A few hours later, Chanti’s family realizes she never made it home. The mom isn’t answering her phone either. When Chanti is still unaccounted for 24 hours later, her family reports her missing and heads to her home to search for clues. Inside her home, a family member finds Chanti’s Apple watch. The watch shows Chanti’s phone is still pinging, not far from her home. The family walks toward the phone’s location, ending up in a wooded area about two blocks away.   As the confused family walks through the area, Chanti’s mom, Rise Dixon doesn’t find her daughter’s phone—but sees what looks like a crumpled figure behind a concrete barrier. As she gets closer, Rise realizes it’s a woman lying on her stomach. Her head is covered with a sweatshirt, and she’s naked from the waist down and unresponsive. Rise calls 911, fearing the worst. Investigators discover the woman died from a single gunshot wound to the temple. Scott Peterson won another court victory in his attempt to have his murder conviction overturned. He was originally sentenced to death for the murders of his wife, Laci Peterson, and their unborn son, Connor, but that sentence was later overturned. The court determined that Peterson's trial judge improperly dismissed jurors who opposed capital punishment. He was resentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Now, a California judge is granting Scott Peterson discovery rights, 20 years post-conviction. The defense team believes these materials could support their claims of trial irregularities and potential evidence mishandling. The judge rejected several requests from Peterson's team for specific evidence while approving others. The Los Angeles Innocence Project and Scott Peterson want to test other items related to a burglary near their home that they believe are connected to the case. Their current theory is that Laci was abducted and killed by burglars who broke into a home across the street from the Petersons' on Christmas Eve 2002. This theory is based on the idea that Laci was still alive after Scott left to go fishing because multiple witnesses saw her walking her dog in the neighborhood. Moving the trial of Bryan Kohberger nearly 300 miles from the crime scene may provide a larger jury pool, but it also creates potential hardship for some victims' families. A GoFundMe account has been launched to help the Goncalves family raise money so they can attend the trial, now set to take place nearly 400 miles from their home. The family, living about 100 miles north of Moscow, has attended every hearing and court appointment since the legal process began and does not want that to change. The trial of Bryan Kohberger is scheduled for next June and is expected to last about three months. The Goncalves family started the GoFundMe campaign titled "Help Kaylee Goncalves Family Attend Trial" to raise funds for accommodations, hoping to secure an Airbnb or house for all 10 family members and their small pets during the trial.
