In 1982, seven people died in Chicago after taking Tylenol capsules injected with potassium cyanide. An investigation into the seemingly random poisonings carried on for decades. No one was ever convicted of the Tylenol murders. But many in law enforcement believed that they had a decent circumstantial case against James Lewis. A longtime con man, Lewis was convicted of attempting to extort Johnson & Johnson, the company behind Tylenol. He had a troubled past, including one other murder charge where he walked after a Miranda violation. He also had a penchant for taunting investigators. On July 9, 2023, Lewis was found dead. On July 27, 2023, Kegan Kline was sentenced to 40 years in prison for a variety of offenses, most of which were linked to child sexual abuse materials. On July 27, 2023, Kegan Kline received his sentence for the 25 counts he pled guilty to earlier this year. Prosecutors Courtney Alwine and Jennifer Keifer presented testimony from Christopher Cecil and David Vido of the Indiana State Police as well as Cathy Knight from the Miami County probation office. The witnesses presented horrifying details of the nature of Kline's crimes. After hearing the testimony and weighing the arguments of the attorneys for the state and for Kline, Judge Timothy Spahr sentenced Kline to 43 years, with three years suspended.
