1201: Benjamin Bikman | Insulin Resistance Is Killing Half of America

1201: Benjamin Bikman | Insulin Resistance Is Killing Half of America

Insulin resistance triggers everything from Alzheimer's to erectile dysfunction. Dr. Benjamin Bikman examines the metabolic crisis shared by 50% of America.

Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1201

What We Discuss with Dr. Benjamin Bikman:

  • Half of US adults have insulin resistance without knowing it. It's the upstream driver of most chronic diseases — from high blood pressure to erectile dysfunction to Alzheimer's — not just diabetes.
  • Medical focus on blood glucose misses the real problem. Insulin levels are rarely tested, yet elevated insulin drives disease years before blood sugar becomes abnormal.
  • Fat cell size matters more than total fat. East Asians develop insulin resistance with less weight gain because they have fewer, larger fat cells versus more, smaller ones in Europeans.
  • Insulin resistance causes brain starvation. When neurons can't access glucose due to insulin resistance, cognition declines — which is why some in the medical community refer to Alzheimer's as "type 3 diabetes."
  • Type 2 diabetes is reversible through carb restriction. In one study, 11 newly diagnosed patients reversed their diabetes in 90 days by eating unlimited protein and fat, just limiting carbs.
  • And much more...

63: Daniel Pink | When Is the Best Time to Get Things Done?

Daniel Pink (@DanielPink) is the author of New York Times Best Seller When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, which examines the psychology, biology, and economics behind scheduling for optimal effect -- and why your ideal time to get something done may widely differ from someone else's. What We Discuss with Daniel Pink: Timing is everything -- but we're only now beginning to connect the dots between fields of research to discover the science behind how timing actually works. How humans are wired for time by chronotypes, how to identify our own particular chronotype, and what we can do to match our schedules to this chronotype. What the trough is, how it differs according to chronotype, and how it affects the decisions we make -- for better or worse. How observing the nappuccino and other restorative breaks during the day can minimize the worst effects of the trough. Why lunch is really the most important meal of the day. And much more... Why on Earth would you get into a workplace relationship? How do you do Internet research on people you'd like to meet without feeling like a stalker? Where do you draw the line to give the benefit of the doubt by reaching out and giving, versus spending more time trying to engage with someone who doesn't care? He's also the author of T Is for Transformation: Unleash the 7 Superpowers to Help You Dig Deeper, Feel Stronger, and Live Your Best Life. What Shaun uncovered about his own patterns of behavior by going to therapy. Looking at our life as a series of turning points, and how we can use those turning points to continue moving forward. Using our anger to motivate us instead of hold us down. Why we often keep ourselves down so others around us won't get angry or jealous. And much more... Todd Kashdan (@toddkashdan) is a Professor of Psychology and Senior Scientist at the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being at George Mason University and co-author of The Upside of Your Dark Side: Why Being Your Whole Self -- Not Just Your "Good" Self -- Drives Success and Fulfillment. What We Discuss with Todd Kashdan: Why trying to be positive and happy all the time may be harming your ability to get things done and achieve the results you want. How what you may think of as negative emotions -- like anger -- can be useful superpowers with the proper awareness and application. The problem with living in a time and place when distraction from discomfort comes in an easier and greater variety than ever before. Why every decision you make now is based on how you expect to feel in the future -- and you probably underestimate your ability to tolerate distress. How you can use the discomfort caveat to ease out of the "put on a happy face" rut around others. And much more... Now, let's dive in! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Is there a psychological issue at play if you can't help but look at a woman's cleavage in conversation? Is there a way to change this habit? Though you used to be outgoing and oblivious to what people thought of you, you've found yourself more shy and reserved in social situations lately. How can you get back to your normal stride? Here's one quick way to determine if trying to win back your "just a friend" ex is the right call for you. If you feel like you only have time to meet new people on Tinder, do you have time to invest in a serious relationship? How young is too young to move in with a significant other? How can a female athlete who's stuck in her social circle as "one of the guys" break out of the dreaded friend zone? What can you do to make it clear that you're non-sexual before you throw up when your best friend kisses you on the lips? The label of being "in a relationship" isn't all that high pressure -- you either are or you're not. So is your friend with benefits just keeping you around as an option? How one stays relevant in the entertainment industry, which is always asking: "What have you done for me lately?" The role relationships play at the top of the music game -- one of the most competitive industries on the planet.
