The Simpsons Movie Sequel Confirmed: What We Know So Far

The DCEU Press Event was held by Warner Bros. on Monday and provided fans with updates on the future of the superhero franchise. The co-chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, confirmed the new project, “The Brave and the Bold,” which will introduce the new DCU Batman. This Batman will not be played by Ben Affleck or Robert Pattinson, who starred in previous Batman movies. The film is focused on Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s son, who was raised as an assassin and is described as a “little son of a bitch.” The film will also feature other members of the extended Bat Family who have been left out of recent Batman movies.

Amazon Studios has hired Phoebe Waller-Bridge to write a TV series as part of a potential “Tomb Raider” franchise that would include TV, film, and games. Waller-Bridge could also be involved in a potential movie. The TV series will be produced by Amazon Studios’ former Head of Comedy Ryan Andolina and Amanda Greenblatt, with Legendary also said to be involved. This is part of Amazon’s multi-platform approach which also includes a new “Tomb Raider” single-player game. The “Tomb Raider” franchise was previously held by MGM but is now owned by Amazon Studios, which is handling the film-TV universe and not MGM. The franchise was previously made into a movie series with Angelina Jolie and a reboot with Alicia Vikander, but a sequel had been delayed by the pandemic. The Authority is a high-concept superhero team from the independent superhero setting of Wildstorm comics, which was initially published by Image Comics and later became part of the DC Comics universe. The team was created by writer Warren Ellis as a boundary-pushing reflection and celebration of the Justice League and the Avengers. The Authority’s members, including Jenny Sparks, Jack Hawksmoor, the Doctor, the Engineer, Swift, Midnighter, and Apollo, were designed as more realistic superheroes and had a fighting optimism about the world. The series became a trendsetter for superhero storytelling in the new millennium and was followed by the loud, brash, and controversial style of writer Mark Millar and artist Frank Quitely. The Authority was integrated into the DC Comics universe after the Wildstorm universe was bought by DC. In 2021, a miniseries titled “Superman and the Authority” was released, imagining a near-future in which Superman leads the Authority. The Creature Commandos animated TV series will be written by James Gunn and will feature military superhumans including a human leader, a werewolf, a vampire, Frankenstein’s monster, and a gorgon. The show will also include the character Weasel from Gunn’s Suicide Squad. The animation will lead into live-action and back into animation, allowing for “gigantic and huge” stories without a large budget. The Creature Commandos were introduced in 1980 and are created by J. M. DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran announced the first film in the new DCU titled Superman: Legacy set to premiere on July 11, 2025. The film will kick off Chapter 1, Gods and Monsters. Gunn is writing the film and may direct, but not yet confirmed. Other films were announced including Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, The Authority and Batman. Superman: Legacy focuses on balancing Kryptonian heritage with human upbringing and the idea of good versus bad guy. The Greg Berlanti Green Lantern series development has been scrapped, and a new series called “Lanterns” is being developed by James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new heads of DC Studios. The previous Green Lantern series was to be based on a space opera, while the new series is described as a “True Detective”-style terrestrial-based investigation. The Green Lantern series was expensive with multiple stories but was eventually reduced to focus on Alan Scott and Guy Gardner. The cast was then scrapped, and a new direction was decided to focus on John Stewart. The new series is seen as a “foundational series” for the main story across film and TV, and the actors who play the Lanterns will also be seen in the movies. The series will allow for the exploration and development of characters, which is not possible in a movie. Gunn and Safran are already talking to actors about the new series, and the show will be a “huge HBO TV-style event”. Berlanti, who was previously involved in the Green Lantern series, has scaled back his DC shows and is unlikely to be involved in the new DC Studios. Paramount Global is rebranding its premium cable network Showtime as “Paramount+ with Showtime” in the US. The two brands will be integrated in the streaming world and Showtime content will be available on Paramount+’s premium tier. Chris McCarthy will lead the Showtime studio and oversee network operations while Tom Ryan will oversee the Paramount+ with Showtime streaming business.
