Our Great High Priest | Hebrews Chapter 7 | Missionary Joe Consford

Imagine a battlefield long ago. Abraham has just returned from rescuing his nephew Lot. Dust covers his clothes, his men are weary, and they carry with them the spoils of victory. As the sun sets, a stranger steps forward. He is a king—yet not of a warring nation. His title is unusual: King of Salem, which means peace. His name is Melchisedec. But here’s the strange part—no one knows where he came from. No genealogy. No record of father or mother. No mention of his birth, no mention of his death. In a world where ancestry was everything, Melchisedec appears like a figure out of eternity. Abraham, the father of nations, bows in respect and offers him a tenth of all the spoils. And this mysterious priest lifts his hands and blesses Abraham. In that moment, the greater blesses the lesser. Centuries later, the writer of Hebrews picks up this mystery. He says: “Look! Melchisedec is a shadow, a picture of someone greater to come.” Just as Abraham recognized the authority of Melchisedec, we are called to recognize the eternal priesthood of Jesus Christ. Unlike the priests of Levi, who had to offer sacrifices for their own sins and who eventually died, Jesus lives forever. His priesthood never ends. He never needs replacing. He intercedes for us without fail. It’s as if the Bible is shouting: Our Savior is not bound by genealogy or death—He is eternal, holy, and perfect. Reflection Hebrews 7 pulls back the curtain and shows us the weakness of the law and the strength of Christ. The law could never make us perfect. Priests grew old, died, and had to be replaced. Sacrifices had to be repeated again and again. But Jesus is different. He is the High Priest who never dies, never fails, never needs forgiveness Himself. He offered one perfect sacrifice—Himself—and now He lives forever to pray for you, to intercede for you, to bring you near to God. So the question today is simple but life-changing: Are you drawing near to God through Jesus, the eternal priest? Or are you still trying to approach Him through your own works, traditions, or effort? This chapter calls us to rest in Christ, who is consecrated for evermore. Outro (Build excitement for Revelation 13) Thank you for joining today’s journey through Hebrews 7. What an incredible reminder that we have an eternal priest in Jesus Christ. But don’t stop here. Tomorrow we’ll open Revelation chapter 13—one of the most gripping and sobering chapters in the Bible. It speaks of beasts rising out of the sea, the power of deception, and the mark that the whole world fears. It’s a chapter that will make you think deeply about faith, endurance, and loyalty to Christ in the face of global pressure. Make sure you don’t miss it. Until then, hold fast to the hope we have in Jesus—our High Priest forever.
