I bring you a great story of…drive. And the fruition I find most people experience, where we start off in life driven by our base desires and find the shallowness and meaninglessness of it and wonder if this is all life has to offer. I’ve known of Scott Harrison for many years, but never got the chance to dig into his story and drive myself. Scott is founder of charity:Water and has literally put a dent in the global clean water crisis. He’s been so successful, not only do celebrities want to hang with him, but he’s become a celebrity himself. Scott’s story began by abandoning his faith-based upbringing to spend almost 10 years as a nightclub promoter in New York City. He had great success in driving other people to drink themselves into oblivion and made the nightclubs a lot of money. He was literally paid to party and he imbibed to the fullest degree with drugs, alcohol, sex and everything that goes along with it. As his soul began to dry up, he took a sabbatical to volunteer on a hospital ship as a photojournalist. While in Africa he witnessed people drinking out of a cesspool of water he wouldn’t have used to clean his glasses. He returned to New York City two years later and put his promotional skills to work to found the non-profit organization charity: water in 2006. Scott has not only made a global impact for clean water but today he’s changing how we view and do charity at large. Following is my conversation with Scott to understand what has driven him. We live in a world led by personas. It’s interesting as the public outcry is for authenticity while we feast on the curated and highly edited images and videos on social media. At the core I feel we fear being authentic as we think we’ll be exposed and lose all credibility as we have relationship challenges, health challenges, mental challenges, financial challenges and more. So in this episode I have a story of someone with the perfect picture, who finally let it go and found not only freedom for herself, but her avenue to help others with dramatic success. Tana Amen was a world-renowned health and fitness expert. A model. She was the picture of health, beauty, and success. Then she found herself up on stage to speak to a room full of addicts who she was critically judging for who and how they were. And she realized they were judging her too. It was a radical paradigm shift as she decided to drop the facade, come clean, and admit she had come from where they were and maybe worse. Really worse. Tana is still every bit the picture of health and beauty, but now at an even greater level of success because her gritty past makes her success far more glorious. My muse this week has been celebrity sports coach George Mumford who worked with the likes of NBA superstar Kobe Bryant. A key concept he worked with Kobe on was to “do the activity for the activity itself, not the result.” Friends, this has not been the guiding light of my life. I’ve historically looked at all I do as a means to an end. As a pro cyclist I often felt I was enduring 99 miles of racing just to get to the last mile where we went full tilt for the finish line. I unfortunately did a lot of my life like this. And what George coached Kobe in was to enjoy playing basketball. Enjoy it for himself. Taking shots and making baskets is part of playing, so of course do that, but see the glory in the overall playing of the game. And what I’ve realized is if you take this approach, you are guaranteed to win. In my work, if I enjoy the activity, I win every day. Whether I make a billion dollars or become the most influential podcaster in the human potential movement. If I enjoy being a father, I win everyday regardless of the trials of being a parent. If I enjoy my exercises and adventures and grocery shopping and cooking, then I’ve won already. Though as George knew and Kobe found out, the more you enjoy the overall activity, the better your perform as well and it’s what helped Kobe Bryant become one of the greatest players of all time. I grew up focused on performing. I’m an introvert who doesn’t care for the stage. The performing I’m talking about is being able and capable and winning and achieving and being limitless with no weaknesses. I found a lot of achievement, and heartache, by treating myself as a tool to achieve things. And I missed my potential. Being the fullness of me. In my quest, I’ve found George Mumford. What is driving many people. Most of us. Is a lack of resolving. It’s politically correct to validate everyone’s pain and call it trauma. So on one hand you have an adult who suffered from severe abuse as a child, and on the other hand an adult who is still suffering from not making the football team. One was life threatening and the other was ego threatening. Making that statement will sound minimizing and likely gain me some criticism, but my point is to elevate the issue of resolution. The difference we find between the two is only the individuals ability to resolve the hurt. I know a lot of grown adults, me included, who have not had what they feel are big traumas, but they exist in an unsettled spirit. Often frustrated. Dissatisfied. Angry or sad. And they don’t know why. I posit that the issue is not what happened to us and judging it’s validity, but simply, have we, can we, resolve it?
