How To Stick To Your Healthy Habits When Your Day Gets Punched In The Face | Part 1: Michelle Segar
#1012: How do you make effective, lasting change in your life, especially regarding eating and exercise. In all our areas of life where we seek to develop new habits and get new results, there is new information that the areas of diet and exercise don’t work like the others and are the areas we most fail, because, life happens. This new information is brought to us by Dr Michelle Segar who I have with me today. Michelle takes our cultural concept of habits to task. We’re going to talk about her groundbreaking, decision-making framework—and the science behind it—to give hope to the millions of what she calls, and labels herself as, “unhabiters” who are frustrated with their failure to keep up all the good habits they intend to engage with, and discuss a behavior-change solution designed for them. We are enamored with creating habits in our lives that will give us the success we want, but what you’re about to find out is the normal framework and perspective of habits we have doesn’t work for…a lot of us. But there is a solution that will, and it’s why I have Michelle on the show. Michelle is an award-winning, National Institute of Health funded sustainable behavior change researcher at the University of Michigan and a lifestyle coach. For nearly three decades, she has pioneered methods to create sustainable healthy behavior changes that are being used to boost patient health, employee well-being, and even gym membership retention. I’m pulling info from her new book, The Joy Choice: How To Finally Achieve Lasting Changes In Eating and Exercise. Fortune For Those Who Do Not Need Or Care For The Fame | Part 3: (Tim Schurrer) with Tom Ziglar
#1011: We wrap up my series on Tim Schurrer’s book, “The Secret Society of Success” by discussing the concept of finding your fortune without having to seek attention and fame, with Tom Ziglar. Tim spent a decade as COO for author and leader Donald Miller, leading the team outside of the spotlight, and this is the focus. We’re in a culture where everyone is trying to get attention. To be in the spotlight and on the stage, to get likes and followers. And for everyone in the spotlight there are scores of people supporting the effort. People making lots of money, having lots of fulfillment, and we debate, possibly experiencing more joy and peace than the person grinding it out to be up on stage. Tom Ziglar spent a lifetime watching his father, Zig Ziglar, on stage and in the spotlight. He helped support his dad. Today Tom is in the spotlight, so he’s experienced both sides. Further, he grew up amongst his Dad’s peers on stage and got to see the good and bad of the spotlight, and rub shoulders with thousands of people supporting those people, so he is a veritable expert on both sides. This may be the only podcast series not trying to push everyone to push for the spotlight, the stage, and for attention for everything they do. It’s honestly not where the most opportunity is. Guard Yourself From A Toxic Environment | Functional Friday
#1010: What are you coming into contact with on a daily basis? Dr. Randy James, MD and I are going to open your understanding to what you need to know. To take an extreme, what if you let a daily dose of radiation wash over you every day. Just a mere second, not too much. But every day, over time, what would happen? Enough would be catastrophic. As our world is increasingly filled with pollution and toxins, the very air is truly suspect. What is touching our skin, what are we smelling in through our nose, irritating our eyes? Allergies, mold, toxins and chemicals. Should we all walk through life wearing surgical masks and radiation suits? Environmentally it wouldn’t hurt, but it might cramp your social life. What DO we need to be on the lookout for? What is most threatening to us? How much of our physiological and psychological maladies are related to what we come into contact with via our skin and the very air we breath? Let’s find out. The Number One Way To Program Your Day For Joy And Success | Functional Friday
#1007: You are listening to messages that program who you are and how you feel nearly 24 hours a day, and you have control over the vast majority of these messages. All day long you are listening to two things; the auditory messages from every direction you tune into or expose yourself, and often from them, you then continue to listen to those messages as they play inside your head as thoughts. The social media and news headline fighting, the snarky memes, the negative bent of most media, the complaint of friends, family, and co-workers, the music, videos and on and on. If you build a house would you build with wood and steel and brick, or garbage? Every day you are building your mind and attitude. What are the ingredients you are giving it? This is our Functional Friday episode and Randy James, medical doctor and Functional Medicine expert, joins me to discuss the effects of our audio input and how it impacts more than just our mind, but our physical aches and pains as well. And the main point is how you can help yourself, be well, by safeguarding what you hear and listen to and ultimately…think. High Performance Aging | Part 3: (Becca Levy) with Randy James
#1006: We continue the discussion on aging from my conversation with Becca Levy, author of Breaking The Age Code who I featured in episodes 1003 and 1005, but here I bring on my favorite medical doctor and dear friend Randy James to discuss positive and high performing aging through a Functional Medicine lens and just real world walking out this concept of not accepting the demise we currently do in our culture, where you hit your mid 20s and 30s and start saying, “Well, I just can’t do what I used to do,” and meanwhile this March, 2022, Kenichi Horie at age 83 set a world record sailing solo across the Pacific without stopping, the same thing he did at age 23. That’s 60 years later. He says he hopes to continue such voyages till he’s 100. We quickly just write him off as an anomaly. But is he? Or is he simply living out what could be attainable for us all if we didn’t expect and accept an earlier and earlier demise. Join Randy and me as we talk about our personal views and expectations on aging, how Randy approaches it with patients, and how you might change the trajectory of your own aging to something with more capacity. Every Day Older Is A Day Of Increased Power | Part 2: Becca Levy
#1005: I’m back with Dr Becca Levy to talk about Values & Habits in the key areas of life fulfillment, and look at how we have positive and negative perspectives and expectations around aging. And “aging” these days seems to be expected at earlier and earlier ages. To a great degree, we will age as we expect to age. So in this episode we talk to an expert around just that, the expectations we have and will likely manifest in our lives. Every day older we become, we should be adding to our ability. Yes, at some point late in life we may find some lessening strengths, but that is not a given. Animals are not hobbling around. They are full tilt till the end. Why can’t that be you and me? Dr. Becca Levy is an award-winning Yale Professor of Psychology and Global Health. She received her Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard University. She has given testimony before the United States Senate on the effects of ageism and contributed to briefs submitted to the United States Supreme Court in age-discrimination cases. She is credited with creating a field of study that focuses on how positive and negative age stereotypes affect the health of older individuals. And she is the author of Breaking the Age Code: How Your Beliefs About Aging Determine How Long & Well You Love, which just came out. Find it anywhere you get books and connect with Becca at becca-levy.com. I encourage you to listen to our previous episode, 1003, where Becca and I dig into ageism and how we can age better by viewing it more positively, and of course, taking more positive actions.
