A Story of Forgiveness and Reconciliation | Philemon | Missionary Joe Consford

A Story of Forgiveness and Reconciliation Welcome back to The Morning Meditation Podcast. I’m Joe Consford, and today we’re opening our Bibles to a small but powerful book — Philemon. Though it’s only one chapter long, it carries a message about forgiveness, reconciliation, and the transforming power of the gospel. Scripture Reading "For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord." — Philemon 15–16 (KJV) Missionary Story Many years ago in West Africa, a young man was caught stealing from his employer. In that culture, theft is a serious crime. The punishment could have ruined his future and brought deep shame to his family. Afraid and broken, he ran to a small church where a missionary was preaching. After the service, he confessed his crime and begged for prayer. The missionary sat him down, opened his Bible, and read from the book of Philemon. He explained that Onesimus, too, had wronged his master, but through Christ he became a new man — not a runaway slave, but a brother in the Lord. The missionary didn’t just pray with the young man. He walked with him to face his employer. Much like Paul did for Onesimus, he pleaded on the young man’s behalf: “Receive him not as a thief, but as a brother.” At first the employer was angry. But as he watched the missionary’s tears, and saw the young man’s repentance, his heart softened. He forgave the debt, dropped the charges, and gave him a second chance at work. That day, the gospel wasn’t only preached in words — it was lived out in forgiveness. And the entire village began to talk, not about the crime, but about the Christ who changes lives. Reflection The book of Philemon reminds us that the gospel is about reconciliation. God reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and now He calls us to forgive and be reconciled to others. So let me ask you: Who is your “Onesimus”?
  • Who has wronged you, and yet needs to be seen — not as an enemy, but as a brother or sister in Christ?
  • Could your act of forgiveness be the very testimony that points someone else to the cross?
Outro Thank you for joining me for today’s meditation from the book of Philemon. In our next episode, we’ll turn to Exodus 15 — the Song of Moses — a beautiful passage of praise after God parted the Red Sea. You won’t want to miss it. Until then, fix a cup of coffee, find a quiet place, and let the Word of God dwell richly in your heart today.
