1226: James Kimmel, Jr. | No Even Scores in the Science of Revenge

Your brain on revenge looks like your brain on drugs. Here, Dr. James Kimmel, Jr. explores the neuroscience of vengeance and the power of forgiveness.

Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1226

What We Discuss with James Kimmel, Jr.:

  • Revenge activates the same brain circuitry as drug addiction. When we experience grievances, our brain's pain centers light up, triggering cravings for revenge that activate the nucleus accumbens and dorsal striatum — the same pleasure and addiction pathways used by cocaine, gambling, and alcohol. This explains why revenge feels temporarily euphoric but leaves us wanting more.
  • Most violence stems from perceived victimization, not inherent evil. Nearly all forms of human violence — from playground bullying to terrorism and genocide — originate from revenge-seeking behavior. The perpetrator almost always views themselves as a victim first, making revenge the root cause of mass shootings, intimate partner violence, gang conflicts, and even war.
  • Imagined grievances trigger real revenge desires with real-world consequences. It doesn't matter whether victimization is real or manufactured — if it feels real in your head, it produces genuine revenge cravings. This explains how leaders like Hitler used the "stab in the back" myth to mobilize a nation, and why mass shooters nurse perceived slights that no one else remembers.
  • Revenge addiction destroys relationships and keeps you trapped in the past. Unlike self-defense (which protects your future), revenge always looks backward, creating a preoccupation with past wrongs. It damages every relationship, increases anger and anxiety, and paradoxically makes you feel worse after the initial dopamine hit fades — all while fearing retaliation.
  • Forgiveness is the neurological cure — and you can learn it. Science now shows we're hardwired for forgiveness as much as revenge. Forgiveness actually stops pain rather than just covering it up, shuts down revenge cravings, and reactivates your prefrontal cortex. Dr. Kimmel's "Nonjustice System" — a role-play trial method tested at Yale — gives you a practical way to be heard, hold someone accountable in your mind, and ultimately release yourself from past wounds. More tools and insights coming in part two later this week.
  • And much more...

138: Forget Finding Your Purpose — Do This Instead | Deep Dive

Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) joins us to deep dive into the elusive subject of purpose -- why you’re not finding it as easily as the so-called experts say you should be, and why you should be following meaning to purpose instead of picking a purpose and hoping it’s full of meaning. [Featured image by Smart] What We Discuss with Gabriel Mizrahi: The difference between purpose and meaning. Why reverse-engineering meaning from purpose is harder (and far less effective) than finding purpose through meaning. What an ER nurse taught Gabriel about the surprising ways meaning can manifest. Why you should be suspicious of what The Cult of Purpose is trying to sell you. The best ways to naturally follow meaning to purpose without forcing an expectation of what that purpose is. 137: How to Cope with Remorseful Flirtation | Feedback Friday

Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Jason DeFillippo (@jpdef) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! Friend of the show and Entrepreneur on Fire John Lee Dumas (@johnleedumas) joins us to help a listener begin anew in a new city. If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now, let's dive in! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: If there's such a thing as remorseful flirtation, how should you feel to be on the receiving end of it? As old-timers who have already been there and done that, how do we recommend you live your twenties to their fullest? The management at your current job barely acknowledges you and it's time to move on. Is it appropriate in this case to give notice by email? Will setting boundaries for your narcissistic sibling have any positive effect on your relationship, or should you just cut them off altogether? What's the best way to bid a fair-weather friend adieu after they've made it clear that visiting you on your almost-deathbed was a real inconvenience? Even though you bounced back from your layoff with a huge pay increase and promotion potential galore, you miss your old team and want to stay on good terms. How do you speed up the healing process to make this possible? When you have a lifelong habit of rejecting people before they reject you -- to the point that you've never dated and you don't have any close friends -- what can you do to become more approachable? When moving to a foreign city to reboot your personal and professional life, what's the best way to put down roots, make new connections, and get your brand noticed? Spencer Greenberg (@SpencrGreenberg) is a mathematician, entrepreneur, and founder of Clearer Thinking, a website that trains people to overcome their own biases and make better decisions rationally. What We Discuss with Spencer Greenberg: Common logical fallacies and concepts like black and white thinking, cherry picking, straw man arguments, and the typical mind fallacy. How these logical fallacies can be so powerfully persuasive even in the face of contrary evidence, and why they inhibit our thinking and keep us from getting closer to the truth. How to spot cognitive bias in ourselves and others -- and in the sources we choose to inform us about the outside world. How we can improve our critical thinking, cut through these faulty arguments and biases, and separate fact from fiction with logic over emotion. Practical tools that allow us to cultivate clearer thinking for these often cloudy times. And much more... Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Jason DeFillippo (@jpdef) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! Friend of the show and Entrepreneur on Fire John Lee Dumas (@johnleedumas) joins us to address a common concern of a lot of people have about leaving behind a miserable corporate job to pursue entrepreneurial ambitions. If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now, let's dive in! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: You're at a new job and they've already pegged you as the "quiet" one. But what do they really mean? How do you find a tribe of like-minded, growth-oriented people who don't seem like they're part of some motivational cult? After so many "we should hang outs" without follow-ups, should you just accept that a best friend isn't in the cards for you at this point? With a full-time job, supportive girlfriend, and research papers taking up most of your time, how and where can you find opportunities to grow your skill set? You're young, successful, and ready for a relationship -- but you can't seem to find anyone whose drive goes beyond Netflix and work. Where should you be looking? You're good at chatting when given interesting subjects to talk about, but have no skills in coming up with those subjects. How do you create meaningful conversations from scratch? You've got a great job and a comfortable lifestyle, but you regret never finishing college or following your intended career path. Are you a fool to go back to school? 131: How to Know When It’s Time to Start a Side Hustle | Feedback Friday

131: How to Know When It’s Time to Start a Side Hustle | Feedback Friday

Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Jason DeFillippo (@jpdef) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! Friend of the show and Entrepreneur on Fire John Lee Dumas (@johnleedumas) joins us to tackle one of our trickier questions about starting a side hustle! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now, let's dive in! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Are once-friendly people really avoiding you for some unknown reason, or is their perceived lack of interaction largely in your own socially anxious head? When you're young and in long-distance love but also looking for a new career path, should you follow your heart and move closer to your sweetheart or follow your head and pursue local educational opportunities in your chosen field? What's the most graceful way to turn down a retention bonus without sending a signal to the company you are looking for another job? You're newly single and going to yoga classes. You want to ask out someone who seems to be expressing interest in you, but you also want to respect the yoga space and not tarnish your ongoing practice at this studio. What's the right next move? You've recently been made privy to sensitive information about your clients from a well-meaning but careless business contact. How do you make this contact understand -- without being ungrateful for their effort -- that such information in the hands of someone less ethical could jeopardize their career and the integrity of your organization? Your boss treats you as a liability rather than an asset thanks to fabricated and unsubstantiated accusations made against you in the past, but rumor has it this person is leaving in a few months. Is it worth your time to get this person to see your value, or should you just stay under the radar until the (fingers crossed) new boss arrives on the scene? Your morale is low at your current company, and in spite of skill stacking to position yourself uniquely in any number of other companies, you can't seem to land an interview elsewhere. Is it time to scratch that entrepreneurial itch you've been feeling with at least an honest foray into the side hustle? What can you do to mend the divide between you and someone with whom you shared a relationship when you empathize with why that person isn't exactly the president of your fan club? Recommendation of the Week: The Final Table Quick shoutout to Dr. Brad Block of the Physician's Guide to Doctoring podcast! Have any questions, comments, or stories you'd like to share with us?
