Life-Changing Films, Movies That Fall Apart in Act 3, and More

On the May 4, 2021 episode of /Film Daily, /Film senior writer Ben Pearson is joined by managing editor Jacob Hall, weekend editor Brad Oman, and writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista to answer some listener questions from the mailbag. In The Mailbag: Hi gang, Hakim from Los Angeles writing in. I’m curious: what current/historical event or subculture would you all want to be explored in a film that hasn't been (doc or narrative)? Love the show. Keep up the awesome work! All the best, Hakim Hey guys, love the show and appreciate the work that you do as well as the different perspectives everybody brings. My question is this: what is a movie that you feel you could do a one person reenactment of? Mine would be School of Rock. While it is not necessarily my favorite movie, I pretty much know it by heart and I feel that I could perform most of the movie by myself if I had to. Anyway keep up the great work! – Matt, New Jersey P.S. Today’s podcast discussed the best opening credits sequences and I just wanted to add Men in Black as an opening that deserves some love. Hi Peter and /Film crew, I listen to your podcast while making dinner. I really loved the segment at the end of /Film Daily Ep. 875 where Ben, HT, and Chris discussed their favorite opening credit sequences. Film titles have shifted through the years from being Main Titles, which take place at the beginning of the film or tv show, to Main On End Titles, which take place at the end of the film or tv show. Marvel has taken advantage of this Main On End Title format for most of their films and tv shows. One Main on End Title that springs to mind is from Black Panther. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YGTeFM00iU They have Vibranium Sand which pulses to the beat of the soundtrack and forms characters and landscapes from the film. Main Titles seem to be more prevalent in Television shows in recent years. Some great examples of this are Westworld and Game of Thrones...chef's kiss!! If you are interested in learning more about Main Titles, please check out Art of the Title. https://www.artofthetitle.com/ I LOVE this site and it's a great historical resource! Maybe the crew can talk about their favorite Main On End Titles from films or TV shows or their favorite Main Titles from television shows. Keep up the great work and can't wait to hear your next podcast. – Vince from New Jersey First of all, love the show. I play a little drinking game where I take a sip whenever Peter says,"I don't know.” I've been hammered for years now (just kidding). I was wondering, what do you guys think are some great movies that fall apart in the third act? Examples for me are Signs and From Dusk Till Dawn. Secondly, the opposite: movies that you considered turning off but then the third act saved it? Examples for me are Hardcore Henry and The Prestige. – Donnie from Florida Hello /Film team, as a self-proclaimed film buff, I'm a firm believer that movies are capable of shaping one's life. With that, I'd like to know what are some "life changing" films which you guys can recommend? By "life changing" films, I'm pertaining to films that you guys have personally resonated to, so much so that it changed the way you perceive life or how you treat other people. I'd love to have an insight as to what films shaped the life of my favourite movie critics. Love the podcast, love your works, and thank you! – James from Manila, Philippines All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. Spoiler Conversation: The Marvels

Spoiler Conversation: The Marvels

On the November 13, 2023 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film editors Jacob Hall and BJ Colangelo to have a spoiler-filled conversation about The Marvels.Opening Banter: In The Spoiler Room: The MarvelsQuick acknowledgement of its sub-par box office performance, the delight some people are taking in its failure, etc. If you want to listen to people gleefully celebrate this movie’s failure, I’m sure there are plenty of places to do that, but that’s not what we’re doing here.Brief reactionsJacobBJBenBreakdownThe movie opens with Dar-Benn, played by Zawe Ashton. She’s now the leader of the Kree, and is searching for the Quantum Bands. She uncovers one of them and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) has the other. Before we get into the heroes, let’s talk about the villain. So Dar-Benn opens these jump points across the galaxy, and by the end of the movie, we realize she’s trying to use these portals to essentially siphon resources back to her home world of Hala – including Earth’s sun. (I’m not really sure how that works, and the movie isn’t super interested in the details, either.) But the jump points create some sort of anomaly in space, and Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) end up touching things they shouldn’t have touched, and Kamala Khan’s bangle/Quantum Band ropes her into one of the movie’s main ideas, which is that these three women are linked, and when any two of the trio use their powers simultaneously, it causes them to switch places. Antics ensue. At one point, they visit a planet called Aladna, where everyone sings as their primary form of communication, and it’s revealed that Captain Marvel is married to a prince. How did you think the film dealt with the relationship between the three women? Monica and Carol have history, Kamala worships Carol.Sam Jackson on a space station, using Flerkens kittens as escape pods.Eventually Dar-Benn gets a hold of both Quantum Bands, is nearly killed by the power of using both at the same time, and inadvertently rips a hole in the multiverse. Monica convinces Carol to make amends for destroying the Supreme Intelligence and basically causing a Kree civil war by flying into Hala’s sun and reigniting it with her powers. Kamala and Carol supercharge Monica, who flies into the multiversal hole to close it, but ends up being stuck on the other side.I guess the Khans are living in Louisiana now?Kamala goes to recruit Kate BishopThe mid-credits sceneMonica wakes up in a medical bay overseen by Dr. Hank McCoy, aka Beast, played once again by Kelsey Grammer. Monica’s mother, Maria Rambeau, played by Lashana Lynch, is sitting at her bedside, but this is an alternate universe version of the character who didn’t die during the five years Monica was Blipped, and she apparently has no idea who Monica is. BJ, you wrote an article about this, so tell me what that costume was that Maria was wearing.Kevin Feige continues to slow-play the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU.Closing thoughtsAll the other stuff you need to know:This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. /Film Daily is Back! Five Nights at Freddy's Box Office, Looking Ahead to The Marvels, and More

On the November 6, 2023 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film staff writer and box office analyst Ryan Scott to talk about the latest film and TV news.Opening Banter: Thanks to the support of you all, the listeners, The /Film Show is once again /Film Daily! Starting today, we are immediately jumping back to doing the podcast five days a week. We’re going to try to stick to a loose pattern of talking about box office on Mondays, news on Tuesdays, doing a water cooler on Wednesdays, a group conversation/debate/list on Thursdays, and Fridays will be a floating day where we may feature an interview or talk about more big news that dropped throughout the week. I also want to get back into doing big spoiler conversations about major movie releases, so we’ll try to introduce those back into the mix as well and may shift the schedule around to accommodate those as needed. There’s a chance we might miss an episode here or there due to holidays or sickness or just life stuff happening, but we’re ramping back up in a major way.The reason we’re able to increase the frequency of the show again is because of our ad partners, and because of listeners like you. So if you hear about a product or service that you’re interested in, it’s important to use the specialized web addresses that we provide, because it’s your way of telling our partners “/Film Daily sent me” and it keeps them interested in working with us, which will keep us able to continue making the show. So thank you all very much for listening, and I look forward to getting back in the groove with all of you.In The News:Five Nights At Freddy’s Fell Hard At The Box Office – Was The Peacock Release A Mistake? After 30 Years, The Nightmare Before Christmas Just Passed A Huge Box Office MilestonePriscillaKillers of the Flower Moon conversationIs The Marvels Facing Certain Doom At The Box Office?Do you think this might be AMC’s mystery movie? “Screen Unseen”It’s a Wonderful KnifeThe HoldoversAll the other stuff you need to know:This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp.
