Why Are We So Addicted to Everything? With Nicklas Brendborg

Why Are We So Addicted to Everything? With Nicklas Brendborg

Are we living in a world designed to hijack our brains? In this episode, Dr Emma Yhnell speaks to international best-selling author Nicklas Brendborg about how supernormal stimuli have become the norm in modern society. Whether it's food or our screens, Nicklas Brendborg argues that we’re living in an environment that is engineered to keep us hooked. Over centuries, through our agricultural practices we perfected food that appeals to our most basic taste receptors. But we are now in the age of ultra-processed food, which is optimised to be addictive. The same goes for our screens, where colourful social media content hooks us and the constant dopamine hits that are designed to be overwhelming make it hard to unplug from the digital world. It is these habits that are fueling modern society’s epidemics of addiction, loneliness and increasing mental health problems. But Nicklas Brendborg argues that by understanding our biology we can learn to manage our habits, resist the hijacking of our natural instincts, and learn to live with more intention, focus and presence. Nicklas Brendborg is a Danish scientist and author. His international bestseller Jellyfish Age Backwards has been translated to more than 30 languages and was shortlisted for the Royal Society Science Book Prize. He is the youngest ever author to have been shortlisted for this award. Brendborg holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in molecular biomedicine and biotechnology from the University of Copenhagen and is now a PhD student in molecular biology. He has been recognised by, among others, the Novo Nordisk International Talent Programme and the Novo Nordisk Scholarship Programme. His latest book is Super Stimulated: How Our Biology Is Being Manipulated to Create Bad Habits – and What We Can Do About It. In today’s episode, Financial Times/McKinsey Bracken Bower Prize winner Mehran Gul invites us to take a wider view. Drawing from his new book, The New Geography of Innovation, Gul joins Adam McCauley to explore how innovation is playing out globally - and how emerging technologies will both influence and be influenced by shifting geopolitical dynamics in the decades ahead. The Safekeep, with Women’s Prize-winner Yael van der Wouden

The Safekeep, with Women’s Prize-winner Yael van der Wouden

It’s been a remarkable eighteen months for Dutch-Israeli author Yael van der Wouden. Her debut novel, The Safekeep, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and this year it won the Women’s Prize for Fiction.  Set in the Netherlands 15 years after the end of World War II, The Safekeep is the story of a reclusive young woman living in her family’s isolated country home, whose life is turned upside down by the arrival of an unpredictable house guest. In this episode, Yael sat down with host Mythili Rao to talk about her approach to writing historical fiction, the enduring legacy of the 20th century’s greatest tragedy and the ways in which her novel challenges the Dutch national narrative about World War II and its treatment of Jewish people during and after the war.    Yael van der Wouden Yael lives and works in the Netherlands, where she lectures in creative writing and comparative literature. The Safekeep is available now in paperback.   If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more. How Geography Explains Our World, with Tim Marshall

How Geography Explains Our World, with Tim Marshall

Tim Marshall is one of the world’s most successful authors on foreign affairs. He’s the writer who put the ‘geo’ into geopolitics with his multi-million selling books Prisoners of Geography and The Power of Geography.  Marshall’s principal argument is that without geography we cannot understand the world. Geography explains why Donald Trump wants to control Greenland. Greenland is of strategic military importance given it sits in the Arctic Ocean along the shortest route for Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles or submarines to reach the United States. It is also a land mass rich in rare earth metals like lithium and tungsten which will be key in building artificial intelligence and military hardware in the coming years.  Geography also explains why China would find it highly difficult to invade Taiwan. The Taiwan Strait is about 130 km wide at its narrowest point, which is roughly three times the distance from Dover to Calais. Any invading force would face inhospitable coastlines, unpredictable monsoons and muddy, tidal beaches. Beijing might decide in time that these are risks worth taking. But these basic and immutable facts of natural terrain still matter hugely in international affairs.  Join Marshall as he comes to Intelligence Squared stage to celebrate the release of a new 10 year anniversary edition of Prisoners of Geography updated with new chapters on Russia’s war in Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East and The United States and China’s battle for global supremacy.  Learn more about your ad choices. How will Trump’s tariff war impact the global economy? With Philip Coggan

How will Trump’s tariff war impact the global economy? With Philip Coggan

What happens when the world’s biggest economy turns its back on global trade? In today's episode, host Adam McCauley is joined by renowned financial journalist and economist Philip Coggan to examine the far-reaching consequences of Donald Trump’s trade war. Drawing parallels with Churchill’s economic decisions in the early 20th century, Coggan argues Trump’s tariff measures and isolationist rhetoric argues that we are witnessing the dismantling of a global economic order that has underpinned international cooperation and prosperity since World War Two.  and reflections on income inequality, global credibility, and economic nationalism, this is a vital conversation for anyone seeking to understand what Trump’s trade war really means for the future of the global economy. Drawing on insights from his new book The Economic Consequences of Mr Trump, Coggan explores how Trump’s shifting economic alliances, combative stance towards China, and disregard for multilateral institutions are reshaping the global financial landscape. Together, they discuss the weakening of the Western alliance, the future of US–UK relations, and how America’s trading partners — and rivals — might respond to this new era of unpredictability.
