Stabilize Your Blood Pressure Using Biofeedback – Mackay Rippey with Dave Asprey : 853
Let’s not sugarcoat it; both low blood pressure and high blood pressure are bad for you. With either, you can experience an inability to focus, dizziness, heart disease, and other health problems. You want to find a way to stabilize your blood pressure in the Goldilocks zone–just right.Controlling blood pressure is especially important when it comes to heart disease, which is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States. There used to be a significant gap between men and women in the incidence of heart disease, but that gap has closed over the past few decades and now women die of heart disease as frequently as men.In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I brought on an expert to talk about Zona Plus. Mackay Rippey serves on the Medical Advisory Board of Zona Health. He explains how the biofeedback device helps you train your own body to change your blood pressure, using isometric exercise. In this kind of muscle contraction, the muscle is tensed and working, but not actively shortening or lengthening. The Zona Plus looks like a joystick from a fighter airplane with a little digital screen on top. That screen gives you immediate feedback.Let's jump right into some of the biochemistry that I found with Zona, Mackay says:“I started with the hand grip. So, 30% is the magic Goldilocks percentage for your grip. So, you need to calculate what your grip strength is in the morning. It can vary from day to day and the optimal is 30%. Now, if you think you can calculate 30% just by knowing what you're feeling, you're sadly mistaken. That's why it helps to have a biofeedback device that tells you, "You're at 30%. Oh, and, by the way, you have to hold it for two minutes." So, if you think you can do that for two minutes, you need a feedback device. It just makes your life a lot easier.”We discuss the effects of pre-hypertension and hypertension on your health, how to manage your blood pressure and how to keep your cardiovascular system functioning properly. We also get into nitric oxide, endothelial cells and red blood cells.Eighty percent of Zona Plus users lower their blood pressure back to normal because Zona makes biofeedback so accessible. It leads to greater cognitive function, clears toxins from your body and more. Consider this hand-held device your cardio biohack. We also talk about the additional supplements you can take to pair with the Zona for faster and better results. And for those of you who may think it’s too early in your life for Zona Plus, that you’ll use it when you’re older, Mackay says to remember this: “Now's the time to start ‘exercising,’ your endothelial cells so that they continue to function well as you increase your age so you're not only living longer, but you're living well as well.”Mackay sees the impact of blood pressure across many areas of health:He co-founded Beyond Protocols, an education accelerator for Functional Medicine practitioners. He formulates supplements for cardiovascular health that reduce blood pressure. He’s operated Mackay Rippey Acupuncture for more than 30 years. He hosts Lyme Ninja Radio, a podcast focused on the challenges and treatment of Lyme disease. And, he’s got a passion for nutrigenomic research.Join us for this important conversation on heart disease, healthy hearts, the blood pressure rollercoaster and some key elements to creating a long healthy life.Note for listeners: I previously interviewed Zona’s CEO, Mark Young. Sergey Young has his finger on the pulse of all things longevity. He’s spent years connecting with the world’s anti-aging research leaders. He’s learned that living to 200 years old and beyond is not only possible — it’s inevitable. When Sergey was on Bulletproof Radio episode #715, he and I talked about ways to make longevity affordable for everyone. Now he’s back with a new book, “The Science and Technology of Growing Young: An Insider’s Guide to the Breakthroughs that Will Dramatically Extend Our Lifespan… and What You Can Do Right Now.”In this new episode of Bulletproof Radio, he explains how medicine and technology advances are rapidly paving the way for the long and healthy future of the human race. He lays out three dimensions to longevity: prevent premature death, life extension and age reversal.“So you just need to keep your body and your mind in a state which is worth expanding its resource,” Sergey says. “And then it comes down to the full horizon of longevity, which is going to be available to us in 25 to 50 years.” He also debunks the most popular myths about longevity: living more means living less, longevity is dangerous and selfish, and life extension is not really possible. Nope, nope and nope. Sergey gathered research and insights from world-leading scientists, doctors, inventors, and health entrepreneurs to address these myths and many others.Learn more about Sergey: He founded Longevity Vision Fund, a $100M fund to accelerate life extension technological breakthroughs and to make longevity affordable and accessible to all. He’s also involved with other longevity-inspired ventures, including: Longevity XPRIZE, a global initiative designed to incentivize the development of technological breakthroughs to cure aging and APPG for Longevity which helps to shape national longevity strategy in the UK.Enjoy! Welcome to Your Upgraded Summer! This new series revisits the Top 10 Bulletproof Radio episodes of all time. And if you want to listen to more, tune in to the original episode.Dr. Barry Morguelan takes the No. 3 spot: The Ancient Energy Discipline That Stimulates Healing and Vitality – Dr. Barry Morguelan – #413Dr. Morguelan is one of only about a dozen living grandmasters of Chinese energy healing techniques. He’s spent nearly four decades studying ways he can help others access their energy. He’s also a gastroenterologist and endoscopic surgeon, with four decades of experience in Western medicine techniques. His search for ways to better help and heal his patients led him to ancient Chinese energy medicine. He began by learning acupuncture, herbology, massage and acupressure in a traditional Chinese medicine hospital. He moved onto martial arts, which taught him a larger scope of his senses and situational awareness. He was asked to complete challenges that taught him what his body was truly capable of, and he’s taken all of those practices to help people harness their full energy. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio with one of our most popular guests, we discuss how his studies impact the way he does his current work, and how you can reach your physical, mental and emotional goals. We also get into how practice, patience and consistent work can help you access the energy you hold to be your best self. Here’s what Dr. Morguelan has to say:“When I got to work there, finally, I had the opportunity when I was in one of the hospitals to read some books that had pictures in them. And those books had pictures of people treating somebody, but not touching them, not doing anything. And the person was getting well. So I asked the doctors I was working with there, and they said, yeah, that's the source of all of Chinese medicine.”“You had to be able to stand on your hands. One of the things that people do here in the military, which is not very common for doctors, one hand pushups, then four finger pushups, three finger pushups, those things I'm not. My hands are for surgery, not for those things, but they were always intimating, which turned out to be absolutely true is that you sort of have two bodies.”“You need to open your eyes and wake up to the fact that all throughout life you've had this, at least, maybe no one told you directly, but it's in the culture. It's in the cultural middle of you, that your life is supposed to go like this. And then like this, and like this, and like this.”Enjoy! BRAIN POWER: Feeding Neurotransmitters Improves Mental Health – A Top 10 Episode with William Walsh, Ph.D.
Welcome to Your Upgraded Summer! This new series revisits the Top 10 Bulletproof Radio episodes of all time. The topics cover essentials like nutrition, energy, hormones, sleep and autophagy, as well as gut, brain, autoimmune and women's health. You'll get the main points in a shortened version so you can get the good stuff and get on with your summer plans. And if you want to listen to more, tune in to the original episode.William Walsh, Ph.D., takes the No. 10 spot: Tailor Your Brain’s Neurotransmission with Nutrients — William J. Walsh, Ph.D. #567In this revamped episode of Bulletproof Radio, I talk with research scientist Dr. Bill Walsh about how brain cells function, how they’re nourished, and what we need to clear out our brain’s trash and keep the good stuff around. He’s spent over three decades studying how you can use nutrients and foods to improve your brain health. His expertise shows how mental health can be improved with nutritional psychiatry.More than 100 neurotransmitters in the brain act as chemical messengers. Research shows us that with certain nutrients you can directly affect how those neurotransmitters work. For people who struggle with addiction, for people who have a mental illness, for those who want to live longer, improve their memory and so much more, Dr. Walsh walks you through the nutrients that can make a difference.New research over the past decade shows us what protects our mind and body, and how much our environment influences that. Here’s more of what Bill discovered:“Neuroscience advances and my interest has always been on the brain and on people with brain disorders, depression, anxiety, autism, schizophrenia--the whole litany of brain science. And my focus has to be on the neurotransmitters themselves. There are about five or six that seem to be especially important in mental disorders. For the first time in the last 10 years, we now are able with nutrients to directly affect neurotransmission of many of the most important neurotransmitters.” “It seems like all the research is still aimed at finding the next billion-dollar drug that can help people. And we now have enough knowledge that from the new research, when you put it all together, we're learning that with nutrients and with diet even, we can make radical improvements in people with depression and anxiety and problems like that. And that we don't necessarily need a drug.” “If you're going to do one test, do a zinc test. Because if you're low in zinc, that means your chance of getting cancer, chance of developing dementia, chance of developing heart disease is much greater. I would guess that probably half of Americans would benefit from more zinc.”Enjoy! And get more resources at Dave.Asprey/podcasts.Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast?
