Robert Maxwell, born Ján Ludvík Hyman Binyamin Hoch, was a British media proprietor, investor, and Member of Parliament. He was born on June 10, 1923, in Czechoslovakia (now part of Ukraine) to Jewish parents. He acquired Pergamon Press in 1951, which became the foundation of his media holdings.
